The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei
This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour
New Roads for Patron-Driven E-books:Collection Development and Technical Services Implications of a Patron-Driven Acquisitions Pilot at Rutgers
Collection development librarians have long struggled to meet user demands for new titles. Too often, required resources are not purchased, while some purchased resources do not circulate. E-books selected through patron-driven plans are a solution but present new challenges for both selectors and catalogers. Radical changes to traditional technical services workflows are required, and selectors must modify the selection process to give more choice to the user. Rutgers University librarians have adopted an innovative new technical services workflow and collection-development model to manage a successful, patron-driven acquisitions project for e-books in the fields of math and computer science. This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship on 13/12/2011, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1941126X.2011.627043

학위논문(박사) - 한국과학기술원 : 재료공학과, 1999.8, [ xii, [114] p. ] thin films were deposited by reactive sputtering of an Y target in Ar and gas mixture. Intrinsic stresses and the Ar content in the films were measured by the sines quare psi method of x-ray diffraction and wavelength dispersive spectrometer, respectively. At low working pressures the films had high compressive stresses. As working pressure increased, compressive stress was relaxed. Ar content was high in the film that had high compressive stress. After annealing of the films at 700℃, the compressive stress was largely relaxed but Ar content remained unchanged. These results clearly showed that compressive stress in films was not caused by Ar entrapment as an impurity but by Ar bombardment. Intrinsic stress was almost independent of the /Ar flow ratio, showing that O bombardment was equal to Ar bombardment in affecting the intrinsic stress in films. The independence of intrinsic stress of /Ar flow ratio was explained by the concept of M_i\frac^{1}{2} θ ±(M_t^2 - M_i^2 sin ^2 θ)^\frac{1}{2}]/(M_i + M_t) instead of the Mt/Mi ratio, where is the atomic mass of the target material, is the atomic mass of the sputtering gas, and θ is the scattering angle. Cu thin films were deposited by bias sputtering and the film density was measured by grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity. The influence of the experimentally measured film density on residual stress, which previously few studies reported about, was investigated. Without bias voltage, the relative film density was low and the tensile stress was high. With increasing bias voltage, tensile stress decreased and saturated to nearly zero at a bias voltage of -100 V while the film density increased and saturated to nearly bulk value at a bias voltage of -100 V. These results were consistent with those from previously reported molecular dynamic simulations. From the consideration of the Morse potential for relatively dense films, it was possible that tensile stress d...한국과학기술원 : 재료공학과
Feasibility and Effects of TAI CHI for the Promotion of Sleep Quality and Quality of Life: A Single-Group Study in a Sample of Older Chinese Individuals in Hong Kong
Poor sleep in later life is a global issue that reduces many individuals' quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this pilot study was to test the feasibility and effects of a simplified tai chi exercise intervention on sleep quality and QOL among Chinese community-dwelling older adults with poor sleep quality. This single-group, descriptive feasibility study included 34 individuals with poor sleep quality who agreed to participate in a 12-week tai chi intervention. Twenty-six individuals completed the program (23.5% dropout rate). Older adults with poor sleep quality who completed the intervention showed significant improvement in the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 mental component and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global and component scores. The low recruitment and attendance and high dropout rates might be associated with participants' age, gender, and sleep quality. Further long-term studies are required to examine the potential effects of the tai chi intervention
