Wade Hampton Letter, MSS.1992
Abstract: Letter from Wade Hampton to John Bynum postponing a meeting they had arranged.Scope and Content Note: This collection consists of one letter written by Wade Hampton to John Bynum on June 18, 1814. In the letter, Hampton advises Bynum that he will not be able to meet with him as originally planned because of unexpected visitors. He indicates that he will also be engaged in attending a trial, but that as soon as it was completed he should be able to meet with Bynum.Biographical/Historical Note: Wade Hampton was born in 1752 in Halifax County, Virginia and served under General Thomas Sumter during the American Revolution. He was a member of Congress for South Carolina from 1795--1797 and 1803--1805 and his military career made him a colonel in 1808 and a brigadier-general in 1809. However, because of bad feelings between Hampton and a senior officer, Hampton resigned his commission on April 6, 1814. Hampton was among the first to plant cotton, and in 1799 raised a crop of 600 bales valued at approximately $95,000. Besides his lands in South Carolina, Hampton had holdings on the lower Mississippi River and such was his success that when he died on February 4, 1835, he was considered one of the wealthiest planters in the United States

"Dr. Henry Hampton's book," fragmentary copy of prescription book of about 1800.
Dr. Joseph Lyon Miller was a medical doctor from Thomas, West Virginia, who collected and wrote on his family's genealogy, particularly that of the Fielding and Davis families. He also collected extensive materials relating to his wife's family the Hamptons. He gave these records to his nephew John Hampton.A rancher, John Howard Hampton was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on January 17, 1898. He began ranching near Clarksville, Texas, later working on 6666 Ranch and directing ranch operations near Slaton, Texas and Tucumcari, New Mexico. From 1956-1958, he served as president of West Texas Museum Association. Hampton donated extensive Indian and western collections to area museums before his death in Tucumcari in 1967. He donated the Joseph Miller collection to the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech.A large part of the collection deals with letters and correspondence relating to Hampton's ancestors, some of which extend back to 1675. It also contains land deeds, inventories, newspaper articles, photographs, and family letters collected by Hampton's uncle, Dr. Joseph L. Miller of Thomas, West Virginia.Additional materials are available in the collection but are not available digitally. Interested researchers should contact the Southwest Collection Reference department to arrange to view them. All items used from the Howard Hampton Papers should be cited according to the format in the following example:
