    Ashley Hamilton Interview

Ashley Hamilton (Class of 2003) was interviewed by Laura Narvaez in the Oral History Studio in Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on October 23, 2023. Ms. Hamilton was born in New York City in 1981 where she lived with her parents and older brother until 1986 when her family moved to Dallas to prepare for the death of her father, who died later that year. Her interest in history was fostered by her third grade teacher, Geri MacKenzie, at St. Rita Catholic School through a trip around the world project. She participated in many sports during her high school years, including soccer, volleyball, and softball, and an internship in SMU's athletic training room her senior year of high school solidified her desire to attend. She decided to come to SMU to remain close to her mother, to whom she became very close after the death of her father. She graduated from SMU in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and a minor in sociology. During that time, she worked as an athletic trainer for SMU. Because of her athletic schedule, she was unable to connect with SMU's Black community through the Association of Black Students. She discussed several uncomfortable memories from her history classes, as well as the professors and classes she most connected with. Since graduation, she has been heavily involved with Black Alumni of SMU, including serving as its chair. At time of recording she was working as the director of the work program for Paul Quinn College in Dallas, and has three children with her partner

    Philosophy of Comedy

Ashley Pryor, Associate Professor of Humanities at the University of Toledo, reflects on her recently completed, two week course in which students explored four major philosophical theories of comedy: play, relief, superiority and incongruity. Not only did the class consider what Aristotle and Kierkegaard had to say about incongruity, or what Kant and Shaftesbury considered comedic relief to be, they took the opportunity to examine the work of their favorite comedians and create their own comedic work in the forms of joke writing, improv, satire and sketch to produce a comedy showcase. Finally, learned ways to transfer the skills of comedic writing (creating a strong point of view, editing and revising work for clarity and force of expression, doing quick but effective and ethically responsible research for a short satiric publication) to significantly improve the effectiveness of their writing for other contexts. This presentation was given on July 11, 2022, for the Hamilton College Summer Program in Philosophy held in Clinton, New York

Ashley B., an alumnus of Southern Adventist University, shared about her interesting time serving as a business student missionary for Akuna Soaps Industries in the Southern Province of Zambia. She shared about her business background and how this impacted her time serving as well as how her missionary year impacted her career goals. You may ask, “what is an extreme sport?” An extreme sport is one that involves more risk or injury than average sports. It is an adrenaline pumping activity. One of the more popular extreme sports at HJH is Skate Boarding. There are others such as snow boarding, mountain biking, wake boarding, and BMX’ing. Josh Gabrial is an extreme skate boarder. He skates at the new Lethbridge Skate Park on the north side of town. He also likes the area downtown around the Centre Place Mall. He looks for steps, small walls, ledges and hand railings to challenge his abilities. Most skaters spend as much time as they can practicing their sport... some up to 3 hours a day. At the first of the year Adam Lastiwka and some fellow skaters when to the School Board Office with a proposal for the HJH Skateboarders. They wanted a place to do what they do! They skate at lunch hours but had been kicked off every place they had tried to skate that was near the school. They proposed that theHJH skaters be allowed to use the area that leads up to the school board office parking lot just south of the school. They knew it was an acces road to the board office parking lot and they didn’t want to bother the board office employees. So they put together a list of rules and requests to make the area safe for skateboarding while not bothering people who needed acces to the building. The superidentent, Mr. M. Clewes accepted their proposal and now the HJH skaters have a place to practice their sport near the school. 44 X-Clountry W>nners Senior Boys 1. Joel Kotkas 9:44 2. Adam Hoof 10:21 3. Paige Atkinson (grade 9) won herself a GMC Jimmy for her efforts in the bi-annual HJH fund raiser. Bridge City Chrysler donated the used sport utility vehicle to Hamilton for the event. Students participating in the fund raiser found sponsors before they took an exam. Students then collected a net amount from their sponsors or an amount per question they correctly answered on the exam. This was a more creative and fun way of raising money than selling chocolates or candles. HJH had some great sponsors so we had some great prizes. The top fundraiser was allowed to pick for first prize and every consecutive finisher picked next. Among the prizes was a round-trip for four to Edmonton courtesy of Integra Air. Coca-Cola, meanwhile, donated money to the school to help pay for basketball uniforms and glass backboards. Sterilisation and intellectually disabled people in New Zealand—still on the agenda?

    No full text
Support through care and protection within a medical framework, rather than through the idea of independence within the least restrictive environment, continues to guide service provision for intellectually disabled people in the sexuality area. Past practices have included use of involuntary sterilisation. This article outlines the outcome of a search for information undertaken because of concerns that use of sterilisation-related procedures may remain embedded in contemporary approaches to sexuality support management. Verified instances of hysterectomy carried out between 1991 and 2001 were uncovered. Documents tabled at a Parliamentary Select Committee in 2003 expressing concerns about use in relation to young disabled girls were also found. Requests for sterilisation-related procedures exemplify how the right of all vulnerable citizens to full bodily integrity is currently adjudicated in New Zealand. It is suggested that further research is needed to pinpoint and address the underlying social customs through which requests for such procedures are negotiated and resolved
