Characterizations of the Generalized Beta-generated family of distributions.
Several characterizations of Generalized Beta-generated family of distributions, introduced by Alexander et al. (2012), are presented, giving special emphasis to the Kumaraswamy skew-normal distribution and the Beta skew-normal distribution, special cases of this family. Warren G. Harding letter to Adolphe Danziger, February 21, 1921
In this letter dated February 21, 1921, President-elect Warren G. Harding writes to Adolphe Danziger, a Jewish scholar, lawyer and author, to thank him for the poem he wrote honoring Harding titled "Within the Storm."
This letter is part of the Warren G. Harding Papers (MSS 345). This collection includes correspondence, business records, and other materials documenting Harding’s business career as owner and editor-in-chief of The Daily Marion Star, as well as the various stages of his political career. A significant portion of the collection, and what’s available on Ohio Memory, highlights his 1920 presidential campaign, spanning just before publicly announcing his candidacy to handily defeating Ohio Governor James M. Cox in the election. Correspondents include both Ohio and national businessmen, political figures, and ordinary citizens writing with questions, support, congratulatory notes, and campaign advice. Some of the most interesting insights into the tumultuous political climate in the U.S., the extreme factionalism within the Republican Party in Ohio, and Harding’s campaign strategies are described in letters between Harding and his campaign manager, Harry M. Daugherty. Some of the topics addressed include women’s suffrage, Prohibition, the League of Nations, African American representation and issues, and lingering peace negotiations following World War I

Meaningful human control of increasingly autonomous robots for surgery
This chapter addresses Meaningful Human Control (MHC) and related ethical issues raised by increasing levels of autonomy for surgery robots. First, achieved levels of autonomy are illustrated using state-of-the-art exemplary cases. Second, for each autonomy level, MHC duties of human surgeons are described. In particular, the problem of modulating MHC is addressed, in the light of what action a surgical robot performs autonomously, the operational environment where the action takes place, and how the action is performed, that is, which robotic skills and technologies are employed. Third, drivers for extending robotic autonomy beyond the current state of the art are explored in connection with microsurgery and emergency surgery. These drivers point to possible tensions between the goal of preserving MHC and medical beneficence goals. Finally, MHC of surgical robots is discussed in a broader bioethical context, including its impact on informed consent and trust relationships between surgeons and patients
G-Rank: Unsupervised Continuous Learn-to-Rank for Edge Devices in a P2P Network
Ranking algorithms in traditional search engines are powered by enormous training data sets that are meticulously engineered and curated by a centralized entity. Decentralized peer-to-peer (p2p) networks such as torrenting applications and Web3 protocols deliberately eschew centralized databases and computational architectures when designing services and features. As such, robust search-and-rank algorithms designed for such domains must be engineered specifically for decentralized networks, and must be lightweight enough to operate on consumer-grade personal devices such as a smartphone or laptop computer. We introduce G-Rank, an unsupervised ranking algorithm designed exclusively for decentralized networks. We demonstrate that accurate, relevant ranking results can be achieved in fully decentralized networks without any centralized data aggregation, feature engineering, or model training. Furthermore, we show that such results are obtainable with minimal data preprocessing and computational overhead, and can still return highly relevant results even when a user’s device is disconnected from the network. G-Rank is highly modular in design, is not limited to categorical data, and can be implemented in a variety of domains with minimal modification. Design and synthesis of G-quadruplex selective macrocyclic polyoxazoles
Nucleic acid sequences that can form stable G-quadruplex structures have been implicated in numerous biological functions. G-quadruplexes are thought to play a vital role in telomere maintenance and regulating gene expression. The majority of cancer cells over-express telomerase, an enzyme that bypasses the aging process by adding telomeric repeats to chromosome ends. Also about 65% of oncogenes have a potential G-quadruplex forming sequence in their promoter region. It is believed that stabilized G-quadruplexes can indirectly inhibit telomerase and decrease oncogene expression resulting in cancer cell death. These observations have led to the development of small molecules that stabilize G-quadruplexes as a new class of anticancer agents. Several research groups have developed such molecules but most lack selectivity over other forms of DNA. A unique molecule among these is telomestatin, a macrocyclic natural product with 70-fold selectivity for G-quadruplex DNA over duplex and low micromolar cytotoxicity. Although telomestatin has exceptional activity, it is difficult to synthesize and hard to formulate because it lacks water-solubilizing groups. Initial studies utilized telomestatin as a lead structure to develop a novel class of macrocyclic hexaoxazoles with the most active compound being HXDV. It was shown to stabilize G-quadruplex DNA with no detectable interaction with duplex DNA and had comparable cytotoxic activity to telomestatin. Unfortunately, HXDV had limited aqueous solubility and required a lengthy synthesis. Efforts to modify the structure of HXDV to enhance water solubility and simplify the synthetic process are described in this dissertation. While this was generally successful, a shorter synthesis was needed to rapidly assess structure-activity relationships. This led to the development of a second class of compounds called macrocyclic pyridyl polyoxazoles (PyPX). These compounds utilize a molecular scaffold that is readily accessed in few synthetic steps to form numerous macrocyclic analogs. This enables quick assessment of structure-activity relationships. Several members of this class are excellent G-quadruplex stabilizers and do not interact with duplex DNA. These compounds also possess low nanomolar cytotoxicity and one was active in an in vivo bioassay.
