On 26 March 2021, in a window between lockdowns, author and filmmaker Miro Bilbrough and I met to discuss her free-wheeling memoir, In the Time of the Manaroans (Ultimo Press, 2021). The conversation transcribed here was shared with a wide audience via Zoom as part of the online ‘Room to Listen’ seminar series, hosted in Parramatta by the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University. I now invite you to read, listen and absorb Miro’s flair for poetic storying

    Miro Remo, The Film Author

    No full text
The thesis deals comprehensively with the film work of the Slovak director Miro Remo. The research is based on the central reflection of Remo as a film author who possesses distinctive handwriting. On one level, it focuses on the themes and characters that Remo deals with. The theses also reflects on the directorial methods, stylistic and narrative approaches or elements of film language through which the director communicates them to the film audience (including the extent to which they are repeated or varied). In addition to such focused analyses of individual works, attention is also given to the circumstances of of their creation as well as the sub-phases of their production, i.e. their development, preproduction, shooting, post-production and distribution. A great deal of the work is also dedicated to critical discourse and ? based on extensive research ? it is mapped how Remo's projects were discussed in the media, what kind of controversies they provoked or how they resonated with film critics or within the festival scene. The research includes a series of semi-structured interviews: with Miro Remo himself, as well as with his close collaborators from several professions ? screenwriter and script consultant Juro Šlauka, creative producer Marek Kučera, DOP Jaro Vaľko, editor Marek Kráľovský and sound designer Lukáš Kasprzyk.Ateliér Audioviz

Vimar Is a Novel Regulator of Mitochondrial Fission through Miro.

    No full text
As fundamental processes in mitochondrial dynamics, mitochondrial fusion, fission and transport are regulated by several core components, including Miro. As an atypical Rho-like small GTPase with high molecular mass, the exchange of GDP/GTP in Miro may require assistance from a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF). However, the GEF for Miro has not been identified. While studying mitochondrial morphology in Drosophila, we incidentally observed that the loss of vimar, a gene encoding an atypical GEF, enhanced mitochondrial fission under normal physiological conditions. Because Vimar could co-immunoprecipitate with Miro in vitro, we speculated that Vimar might be the GEF of Miro. In support of this hypothesis, a loss-of-function (LOF) vimar mutant rescued mitochondrial enlargement induced by a gain-of-function (GOF) Miro transgene; whereas a GOF vimar transgene enhanced Miro function. In addition, vimar lost its effect under the expression of a constitutively GTP-bound or GDP-bound Miro mutant background. These results indicate a genetic dependence of vimar on Miro. Moreover, we found that mitochondrial fission played a functional role in high-calcium induced necrosis, and a LOF vimar mutant rescued the mitochondrial fission defect and cell death. This result can also be explained by vimar's function through Miro, because Miro's effect on mitochondrial morphology is altered upon binding with calcium. In addition, a PINK1 mutant, which induced mitochondrial enlargement and had been considered as a Drosophila model of Parkinson's disease (PD), caused fly muscle defects, and the loss of vimar could rescue these defects. Furthermore, we found that the mammalian homolog of Vimar, RAP1GDS1, played a similar role in regulating mitochondrial morphology, suggesting a functional conservation of this GEF member. The Miro/Vimar complex may be a promising drug target for diseases in which mitochondrial fission and fusion are dysfunctional

    No full text
Miro Gavran is the author of children's novels Everything in my head, Hello, Love, How Dad Won Mom, Happy Days and Loved to the Head and others. Already from the titles itself, it can be hinted that these are romance novels that have become increasingly popular among young readers in recent years. In this thesis, the novels mentioned above will be analyzed. In the introductory chapter of the paper, the case of children's literature both in the world and in Croatian literature is described in more detail, in the main part of the paper, the plot of the novel is described, and in the final part of the paper, the features of Gavran's novels are described. Miro Gavran's novels intended for the youngest readers; for children, they are specific for their easy readability, a dose of humor, and in some novels we also encounter a dose of taboos that the author easily lowers, but, we could say, raises to a level that is adapted to the audience for whom it was written. The author doesn't only talk about children's love affairs, but often a family or marital problem that worries the young protagonist is also included in the plan of interest, and he makes great efforts to solve that problem and help in a way that he considers correct

Tactile Feedback for Artery Detection in Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery –Preliminary Results of a New Approach

    No full text
Minimally invasive robotic surgery (MIRS) entails total absence of haptic feedback due to the spatial separation of patient and surgeon. In conventional surgery, however, palpation to detect superficial arteries by a slight pulsation is an important, commonly applied, and security-relevant procedure. Therefore, an ultrasound based unidirectional sensor for MIRS was developed feeding back kinesthetic impulses to the surgeon-sided haptic input device

    No full text
This article discusses the pros and cons of remote education. With the world-wide pandemic of COVID-19 the role of technical facilities for remote education has increased dramatically, and with the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022 classroom-based education has become unavailable for the vast majority of the students in Ukraine. The paper starts with brief historical overview of remote education which is not a modern invention at all. The author demonstrates addressing the problem of missing classroom board with some of the modern software. The need for the study is demonstrated via numerous examples of obstacles (both technical and methodological), a teacher is facing through remote teaching regardless of their skills and professional experience. The main of them is lack of attention and numerous distracting agents (pop-up windows, incoming messages in Telegram, Viber, etc.) that can be neutralized with technical means only. The huge disadvantage of remote education is lack of built-in substitutions for classroom board in common tools for remote conference calls e.g., in Zoom. The specifics of one of the most modern tools for collaborative remote work – Miro virtual whiteboard – are described and assessed. The article reveals both the advantages and disadvantages of virtual boards when teaching English as a foreign language remotely. The author also suggests particular examples of typical exercises involving the interactive whiteboard Miro for students doing remote education. The article provides some examples of how a teacher can introduce new vocabulary, as well as how to make learning grammar through the monitor screen interesting and diverse. For the teacher the Drag-and-drop function appears to be the most useful as it allows to involve students into collaborative work over the same task. This is extremely important for attracting all the students into study and holding their attention through the whole class. The workaround for missing built-in tools for adding audio and video content via screen sharing is demonstrated
