    Wailing Wall

    No full text
As it was for numerous mid twentieth-century Oregon artists, the coast was a constant inspiration for Carl Hall, and many of his paintings and drawings depict the natural and man-made formations of the state's ocean beaches. "Wailing Wall", exhibited in "Artists of Oregon 1954" at the Portland Art Museum, was inspired by the beach and seawall where the D River joins the Pacific in what is now Lincoln City. It meets Hall's criteria that the "Northwest artist [be] concerned with the physical aspects of his environment," transforming these "into works of art." The book "Eden Again: The Art of Carl Hall" published by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, is available at the sales counter in the lobby.Maribeth Collins Art Acquisition Fun

    Ascension

The painting was inspired by the restoration of the steeple of Salem's First Methodist Church (located on State Street one block west of the Hallie Ford Museum). Commenting on the work at the end of this life, Hall stated: 'After the war, I was convinced that the only way to stop fighting was to reunite with Christ. The various ladders suggest there are different ways to get to Christ.' 'Ascension' was exhibited at the Macbeth Gallery in New York, in the Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York in 1952, and in the Artists of Oregon.Gift of Roger and Bonnie Hull in memory of Irene McCarthy Donoho

Carl Hall succeeded Constance Fowler on the art faculty at Willamette, teaching at the University from 1948 until 1986. During his first year at Willamette, when he was teaching part time, Hall painted this view of Minto-Brown Island near the Willamette River in Salem. It suggests why a critic for 'Art Digest' described Carl Hall has a 'magic realist:' the meticulous rendering of the grain of the planks, rope, and plants transforms these ordinary details into a heightened, 'magical' state in the manner of Surrealism.Elmer Edwin Young Purchase Fun

Commentary from Carl Hall (4/26/94): He gave a talkCommentary from Carl Hall (4/26/94): He gave a talk about the painting at Salishan and criticized the developers for what they were doing to the beaches there. 'Salishan is against the laws of nature. I didn't know the owner had just spent $80,000 to keep his house from washing out to sea. This is a painting I love. It shows how the beach is invading the land , moving in.'Maribeth Collins Art Acquisition Fun
