The elegies of Ted Hughes
The purpose of this study is to make the case that Ted Hughes (1930-1998) is one of the pre-eminent elegists writing in English in the latter half of the twentieth century. Whilst his poetry has been widely criticised for its apparent preoccupation with violence and death, it is puzzling that the links these topics have in common with elegy have never been clearly verified. This might be because Hughes's elegies do not appear to bear the characteristics frequently associated with traditional poetic laments; however, as this study shows, closer scrutiny reveals not only many similarities, but also acts of resistance within the broader scope of elegy. Drawing on both established and contemporary critical debates surrounding Hughes and elegy, this study undertakes a comprehensive reading of the poet's major works from The Hawk in the Rain to Birthday Letters, whilst also paying attention to limited editions of his verse, including Recklings, Capriccio and Howls & Whispers. Posthumous publications, including the Collected Poems. Selected Translations and Letters of Ted Hughes, are accounted for. so that (alongside the chronological reading of the poems) Hughes's development as an elegist is fully realised. One of the aims of the thesis is to demonstrate that the poet's elegies are unified in presenting what I term the ‘actual'; that is to say, that Hughes does not fabricate sensations or forge experiences that purport to be beyond the realm of recognisable human endeavour. This I term his 'unfalsifying dream’. This is striking because quite often traditional elegies appear to present the opposite: a language which is ๐mate and images which are close to beatifying the deceased, putting them at a remove from human experience and existence. 'The Hawk in the Rain' is used to illustrate Hughes's theoretical position, especially in the case of his earlier war elegies and the circumstances of Remains of Elmet and Moortown Diary. He is both the observational, seemingly dispassionate poet (the hawk), capable of a detaching himself from the experience he wishes to relay in his verse, and yet, he is also the wanderer 'in the rain, one who is immersed in the momentous instant of his own language and experience. Like his personas, Hughes is divided. He is complicit with many of elegy's practices and traditions, but he is also a reformer and renovator of elegy, writing invigorating verse which brings the realities of mortality closer to the reader. In doing so, he reaffirms the significance of life and how this life might be better lived in closer harmony to poetry and contemporary ecological urgencies. 'The Elegies of Ted Hughes' aims to prove that far from being just a 'poet of nature', Hughes has been an exemplary elegist in our own time

Design of 50nm Vertical MOSFET Incorporating a Dielectric Pocket
A new architecture for a vertical MOS transistor is proposed that incorporates a so-called dielectric pocket (DP) for suppression of short channel effects and bulk punch-through. We outline the advantages that the DP brings and propose a basic fabrication process to realize the device. The design issues of a 50-nm channel device are addressed by numerical simulation. The gate delay of an associated CMOS inverter is assessed in the context of the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors and the vertical transistor is seen to offer considerable advantages down to the 100-nm node and beyond due to the dual channels and the ability to produce a 50-nm channel length with more relaxed lithography
The policy background to Sure Start
Book synopsis: Sure Start Local Programmes (SSLPs) was a major strategic effort by New Labour towards ending child poverty. By changing the way services were delivered to children under four and their families, through targeting and empowering highly-deprived small geographic areas, SSLPs were intended to enhance child, family and community functioning. Following 5 years of systemic research exploring the efficacy and impact of this grand experiment, this book pulls together, in a single volume, the results of the extensive National Evaluation of Sure Start (NESS).
The book reviews the history of policies pertaining to child health and well being which preceded and set the stage for Sure Start. It provides insight into how SSLPs were expected to function and how they actually operated, both in terms of their strengths, weaknesses and costs. The contributors examine the nature of the communities in which these programmes were situated and how they changed over time; present the early effects of SSLPs on children and families, with evidence highlighting some small beneficial effects and some small deleterious ones and extract specific features of SSLPs that contributed to whether individual programmes benefited children and families, providing a guide for the revision of programmes and policies.
With a foreword from Naomi Eisdenstadt, former Director of the Sure Start Programme and concluding chapter by Prof. Sir Michael Rutter, member of the government's scientific advisory board overseeing NESS, this book provides an insightful critique of SSLP policy and NESS that will be of interest to students of child development, families and communities, as well as policymakers and policy scholars, local and national providers of services to children and families and evaluation specialists
Asymmetric gate induced drain leakage and body leakage in vertical MOSFETs with reduced parasitic capacitance
Vertical MOSFETs, unlike conventional planar MOSFETs, do not have identical structures at the source and drain, but have very different gate overlaps and geometric configurations. This paper investigates the effect of the asymmetric source and drain geometries of surround-gate vertical MOSFETs on the drain leakage currents in the OFF-state region of operation. Measurements of gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) and body leakage are carried out as a function of temperature for transistors connected in the drain-on-top and drain-on-bottom configurations. Asymmetric leakage currents are seen when the source and drain terminals are interchanged, with the GIDL being higher in the drain-on-bottom configuration and the body leakage being higher in the drain-on-top configuration. Band-to-band tunneling is identified as the dominant leakage mechanism for both the GIDL and body leakage from electrical measurements at temperatures ranging from ?50 to 200?C. The asymmetric body leakage is explained by a difference in body doping concentration at the top and bottom drain–body junctions due to the use of a p-well ion implantation. The asymmetric GIDL is explained by the difference in gate oxide thickness on the vertical (110) pillar sidewalls and the horizontal (100) wafer surface
Single, double and surround gate vertical MOSFETs with reduced parasitic capacitance
The vertical MOSFET structure is one of the solutions for reducing the channel length of transistors under 50nm. Surround gates can be easily realised in vertical MOSFETs which offer increased channel width per unit silicon area. In this paper, a low overlap capacitance, surround gate, vertical MOSFET technology is presented. A new process that uses spacer or fillet local oxidation is developed to reduce the overlap capacitance between the gate and the source/drain electrodes. Electrical characteristics of surround gate n-MOSFETs are presented and compared with characteristics from single gate and double gate devices on the same wafer. Transistors with channel length down to 100nm have been realised. They show good symmetry between the source on top and source on bottom configuration and subthreshold slope down to 100mV. The short channel effects of the surround gate MOSFETs are investigated
The knowledge economy is shifting into the content (or creative) economy. The importance of innovation has been increasingly accentuated and valued. When it comes to innovation, TED is what pops into everyone’s mind. At the end of 2012, TED Talks have hit one billion views. TED draws those who are willing to learn and share ideas into its community, the so-called TED community. The TED community, therefore, becomes the solid foundation of TED’s innovation. The study attempts to study innovation from the perspective of ecosystem. John Howkins (2009), the Chairman of BOP Consulting and the forerunner in that regard, advanced the creative ecologies. In addition to his theory, there is little research on innovation ecosystem. With a view to this, the research essays to construct the innovation ecosystem, based on TED.
This study accepts the case study method of the qualitative research, ergo. Also, this study collected the relevant materials by means of observation, second data study, and interview. The researcher proceeded on-spot observation for acquiring a TED experience by attending TEDx events and gaining insight for creative ecologies by participating in one John Howkins’ speech. Also, the researcher searched for every possible piece of information about TED to carve out frameworks of the research. In the end, the researcher obtained the primary data from the interviewees, pertaining to the research. They include John Howkins, two organizers of TEDx events, one executive officer of TED, and Hewlett-Packard.
Finally, the research established the TED-centered innovation ecosystem. The researcher believes that three elements - crowd, light, and desire - back up the innovation ecosystem of TED. It is interesting that six roles of the crowd provide the organisms in TED''s innovation ecosystem. The ecosystem is self-fueling, self-organizing and self-restoring, and develops talents. The research framework is oriented toward TED. The researcher wondered whether this perspective can be applied to the cooperation between TED and enterprises, so both the extensional structure of TED and TED’s application to the corporate innovation strategy were also discussed. First, the researcher holds that the enterprise can reach out to the TED community via TED and to the non-TED communities directly or indirectly via the TED community. Second, the researcher drew on the IPO (Input-Process-Output) model and had faith in the presumption that an enterprise can successfully merge TED into its corporate strategy on innovation.I.
