Extracts from Castle One (aka Lightbulb Film;1966): montage of newsreel and other films. Malcolm Le Grice (part VO) says "I want to see a cinema that is in clear opposition to the dominant film and TV culture", points out that the roots of such film-making go back to the origins of modern art, and says that he’s "always tried to give the spectator a positive and productive role". Phillip Drummond talks about the history of the independent, avant garde, cinema, originating in the early Soviet era of the 1920s, coming to prominence in the United States in the 1940s, and now an international phenomenon with its own production, distribution and exhibition outlets. He describes Malcolm Le Grice’s career as a film-maker, teacher and author. Le Grice describes his starting out as a painter, being interested in "transformation and process" and realising that this combination of "movement" and static art form was not unsatisfactory. Talks briefly about his interest in music, and says that he used musical concepts in early films, and made his own soundtracks. Extract from Reign of the Vampire (aka How to Screw the C I A; 1970) in which the soundtrack "largely determined the structure of the film". The sound was controlled using two tape recorders and a mixer, producing a repeating but slowly changing rhythm of sounds, and the images were similarly based on repeating loops. Le Grice VO talking about the threatening (military) nature of many of the images in his early films. Le Grice says he decided that the films were more an expression of paranoia than genuinely political, and he concluded that there was more political value in their artistic structure than in the images, a concept now generally accepted. Music for classical guitar by South African composers : a historical survey, notes on selected works and a general catalogue
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 296-309).This is the first comprehensive investigation of music for, or including, the classical guitar by South African composers. The focus of this research has been, firstly, to uncover as much of the repertoire as possible, and, secondly, to collate, study, catalogue and report on the information. A brief historical survey of the guitar in South Africa provides the context within which this study was conducted. The primary sources of quantitative data collection were through the archival catalogues of the South African Music Rights Organisation and through personal contact with guitarists, composers and guitar teachers. Other sources consulted were publishers, broadcasting corporations, recording companies, libraries and the internet. The body of the dissertation comprises biographical sketches, background notes, analyses and technical notes on 17 selected solo and chamber works dating from 1947 to 2007 by some of South Africa's most prominent composers and guitaristcomposers. The repertoire ranges in style from the traditional and ethnically inspired to the experimental and abstract. As this is an empirical survey, each selected entry includes details on instrumentation, duration, level of difficulty, number of pages, scordatura, commissions or requests, sources or publishers, premières and recordings. A biography of each composer is provided as well as background notes which offer an overview of the selected work. The notes discuss historical, cultural, musical and extra-musical influences, and frequently include references to interview material. The commentaries on the selected works, with musical examples, include an analytical component describing structure, form, stylistic and compositional elements, while the technical observations include performance suggestions and a grading for each work

The Effect of Ligand Design on Metal Ion Spin State - Lessons from Spin Crossover Complexes
The relationship between chemical structure and spin state in a transition metal complex has an important bearing on mechanistic bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis by base metals, and the design of spin crossover materials. The latter provide an ideal testbed for this question, since small changes in spin state energetics can be easily detected from shifts in the spin crossover equilibrium temperature. Published structure-function relationships relating ligand design and spin state from the spin crossover literature give varied results. A sterically crowded ligand sphere favors the expanded metal–ligand bonds associated with the high-spin state. However, steric clashes at the molecular periphery can stabilize either the high-spin or the low-spin state in a predictable way, depending on their effect on ligand conformation. In the absence of steric influences, the picture is less clear since electron-withdrawing ligand substituents are reported to favor the low-spin or the high-spin state in different series of compounds. A recent study has shed light on this conundrum, showing that the electronic influence of a substituent on a coordinated metal ion depends on its position on the ligand framework. Finally, hydrogen bonding to complexes containing peripheral N–H groups consistently stabilizes the low-spin state, where this has been quantified
Malcolm Lowry - Detours and Dislocations - Douglas and Dollarton: Proposals for Artworks
A 1/50 scale model of Malcolm Lowry’s 1944 shack at Dollarton, and a carousel, slide-projected, artwork of 80, 35 mm colour slides (Cates Park and Maplewood Mudflats) were exhibited at the Bluecoat, Liverpool as part of the conference proceedings, July 28 - 29, 2017. A conference paper of the same title discussed the research and making of these artworks.As a set of 'Proposals for Artworks' and associated writing this project builds on previous research, which retraces the footsteps of Wirral-born author of Under the Volcano, Malcolm Lowry. The work emerges from photography and moving image made on location in Vancouver in June 2017. A paper entitled ‘Malcolm Lowry – Detours and Dislocations – Douglas and Dollarton’ was presented at the LJMU conference: Under the Volcano – 70 Years On: An International Malcolm Lowry Conference.
