    Confined Catalytic Janus Swimmers in a Crowded Channel: Geometry-Driven Rectification Transients and Directional Locking

    Self-propelled Janus particles, acting as microscopic vehicles, have the potential to perform complex tasks on a microscopic scale, suitable, e.g., for environmental applications, on-chip chemical information processing, or in vivo drug delivery. Development of these smart nanodevices requires a better understanding of how synthetic swimmers move in crowded and confined environments that mimic actual biosystems, e.g., network of blood vessels. Here, the dynamics of self-propelled Janus particles interacting with catalytically passive silica beads in a narrow channel is studied both experimentally and through numerical simulations. Upon varying the area density of the silica beads and the width of the channel, active transport reveals a number of intriguing properties, which range from distinct bulk and boundary-free diffusivity at low densities, to directional ``locking'' and channel ``unclogging'' at higher densities, whereby a Janus swimmer is capable of transporting large clusters of passive particles

    An Analysis of Technology Acceptance Model- Exploring user acceptance and intension of taxi-hailing app in Shanghai

    This study examines the motivations, perceptions and adoption of users towards taxi-hailing app based on the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM) in a large metropolitan setting. Two hundred and eleven taxi-hailing app users were surveyed about their patterns of usage, demographic, perceptions about the technology, and their behavioural intentions to use online taxi-hailing service. The results of this study confirm the TAM that users’ perceptions are significantly associated with their intentions to use cellular phones. Furthermore, perceived usefulness is the strongest determinant of users’ attitudes and intentions toward taxi-hailing app, followed by perceived ease of use. Finally, implications of these findings for practice and research area are discussed

    Book-ahead ride-hailing trip and its determinants:Findings from large-scale trip records in China

    The cruising of ride-hailing vehicles generates negative externalities such as traffic congestion and vehicular emissions. These externalities can be mitigated by reducing cruising driving via operating book-ahead ride-hailing services, where the platform dispatches and routes drivers based on precise information on travelers’ departure time and origin–destination (OD). However, the effects of factors influencing book-ahead ride-hailing trips have rarely been empirically examined with real data. Using six-month trip data from China, this study employs a gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) method with hyperparameters optimized by the Bayesian optimization algorithm to examine the factors associated with book-ahead ride-hailing trips across OD pairs (hexagon cells-to-hexagon cells) at various spatial scales. The relative importance rankings generated from this study indicate that trip features, weather conditions, and accessibility to transportation hubs are significant determinants correlated with the usages of book-ahead ride-hailing. The partial dependence plots demonstrate the nonlinear threshold effects of these determinants on the hourly number of book-ahead ride-hailing per OD pair. Moreover, this study compares the differences in associations between peak and non-peak hours as well as weekdays and weekends. The disparity in the nonlinear threshold effects between weekdays and weekends is only observable during the evening peak period and not at other times. These findings provide valuable insights into developing practical strategies for promoting book-ahead ride-hailing services.</p

    Connecting e-hailing to mass transit platform: Analysis of relative spatial position

    This paper analyzes and compares two different relative spatial position (RSP) designs in an integrated e-hailing/fixed-route transit system: a zone-based design that operates e-hailing vehicles within a zone, and a line-based design that operates e-hailing vehicles along a fixed-route transit line and with a stable headway. To conduct a meaningful comparison, the optimal design problems for both systems are formulated using a same analytical framework based on the continuous approximation approach. A comprehensive numerical experiment is performed to compare various cost components corresponding to the optimal designs, and a discrete-event simulation model is developed to validate the analysis. The analytical and simulation results agree with each other well, with a discrepancy in the total system cost less than 5% in most test scenarios. These results also suggest that the line-based system consistently outperforms the zone-based system in terms of both agency and user costs, for all scenarios tested. Compared to the zone-based design, the line-based design features a sparser fixed-route network (resulting in larger stop spacing) but a higher dispatching frequency. It is concluded that the higher efficiency of the line-based design is likely derived from the strategy of operating e-hailing vehicles with a more regular route/headway structure and allowing ride-sharing

    Intractability of Optimal Multi-Robot Path Planning on Planar Graphs

    We study the computational complexity of optimally solving multi-robot path planning problems on planar graphs. For four common time- and distance-based objectives, we show that the associated path optimization problems for multiple robots are all NP-complete, even when the underlying graph is planar. Establishing the computational intractability of optimal multi-robot path planning problems on planar graphs has important practical implications. In particular, our result suggests the preferred approach toward solving such problems, when the number of robots is large, is to augment the planar environment to reduce the sharing of paths among robots traveling in opposite directions on those paths. Indeed, such efficiency boosting structures, such as highways and elevated intersections, are ubiquitous in robotics and transportation applications.Peer reviewe
