    Gu Xiong : The River

    No full text
Gu Xiong’s installation “The River” is described by O’Brian as a meditation on migrancy and displacement. The author situates the work within the life of the artist, who left China because of political oppression, and the history of the Canadian West, which has marginalized its Chinese inhabitants. Short poetic texts by Gu Xiong in which he identifies with spawning salmon are included. Biographical notes. 19 bibl. ref

SEISMIC DESIGN OF CROSS-LAMINATED TIMBER BUILDINGS

    No full text
The increasing interest in cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction has resulted in multiple international research projects and publications covering the manufacturing and performance of CLT. Multiple regions and countries have adopted provisions for CLT into their engineering design standards and building regulations. Designing and building CLT structures, also in earthquake-prone regions is no longer a domain for early adopters, but is becoming a part of regular timber engineering practice. The increasing interest in CLT construction has resulted in multiple regions and countries adopting provisions for CLT into their engineering design standards. However, given the economic and legal differences between each region, some fundamental issues are treated differently, particularly with respect to seismic design. This article reflects the state-of-the-art on seismic design of CLT buildings including both, the global perspective and regional differences comparing the seismic design practice in Europe, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Japan, China, and Chile

On a Fractional Nirenberg Problem, Part II: Existence of Solutions

    No full text
This paper is a continuation of our earlier work "[Jin, T., Y. Y. Li and J. Xiong. "On a fractional Nirenberg problem, part I: blow up analysis and compactness of solutions." J. Eur. Math. Soc., to appear]", where compactness results were given on a fractional Nirenberg problem. We prove two existence results stated there. We also obtain a fractional Aubin inequality.Rutgers University; Rutgers University School of Art and Science; NSF [DMS-1065971, DMS-1203961]; Program for Changjiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University in China; First Class Postdoctoral Science Foundation of China [2012M520002]SCI(E)[email protected]

Book Review of A Career in Student Affairs

    No full text
A Career in Student Affairs: Reflections from Hmong Student Affairs Educators is a collection of unique experiences from Hmong professionals who work in student affairs, edited by Dr. Soua Xiong and Dr. Brian V. Xiong. This volume highlights different stories about how Hmong students came into their current student affairs careers. Each chapter has important advice for Hmong students considering a career in student affairs and examine what it means to be a first-generation Hmong student affairs professional. The collection of stories beautifully captures the hopes and dreams of those who immigrated from Thailand to America. In comparison, the book also looks at those who are born in the United States as they all learn to navigate and utilize their culture in student affairs. In this book, the different perspectives give each author room to connect to their past, present, and future selves and how they came to work in this field

Model and analysis of MoS2 nanopore biomolecule detection via membrane current

    No full text
A microscopic model of MoS2 nanopore transverse current biosensor is built based on Boltzmann transport formalism. The model employs a self-consistent Poisson-Boltzmann scheme for the interaction among ions, charge carriers around the pore rim, and biomolecules. In combination with experimental study and molecular dynamics (MD) calculation, a comprehensive physical analysis of various resistive effects involved in the electronic detection of a single biomolecule in a nanopore of a MoS2 nanoribbon is presented. The analysis emphasizes the effects of the electrolyte concentration, pore size, and nanoribbon geometry on the electrical sensitivity of the nanopore in detecting biomolecules. The study also provides explanation of the experimental observation of the effects of the doping polarity and biomolecule charge polarity on the electrical sensing signal.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-05-01The student, Mingye Xiong, accepted the attached license on 2020-04-24 at 16:55.The student, Mingye Xiong, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-04-24 at 17:00.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-04-29 at 08:16.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15065 on 2020-08-25 at 17:40:55Made available in DSpace on 2020-08-27T00:50:02Z (GMT). 康熙字典字母切韻要法探索

    No full text

Parents’ peer restriction in the United States and China: A longitudinal study of early adolescents

    No full text
This research examined parents’ exertion of control over children’s peer relationships in the United States and China. Three times over a year, 934 American and Chinese children (M age = 12.67 years) reported on their parents’ peer restriction (i.e., efforts to limit children’s connection or time with peers) and their psychological adjustment (i.e., delinquent behavior and internalizing symptoms). Parents’ peer restriction predicted decrements in children’s psychological adjustment over time similarly in the United States and China. However, children’s psychological adjustment predicted parents’ peer restriction over time to a greater extent in the United States (vs. China). Thus, culture may contribute to the socialization process involving parents’ exertion of control over children’s peer relationships, but only via child-driven pathways.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-05-01The student, Yu Xiong, accepted the attached license on 2019-04-22 at 11:09.The student, Yu Xiong, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-04-22 at 11:15.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-04-22 at 15:54.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #13815 on 2019-08-22 at 16:23:29Made available in DSpace on 2019-08-23T20:48:22Z (GMT). A comparison of Landau-Ginzburg models for odd-dimensional Quadrics

    No full text
In [Rie08], the second author defined a Landau-Ginzburg model for homogeneous spaces G/P, as a regular function on an affine subvariety of the Langlands dual group. In this paper, we reformulate this LG model (X^, W_t) in the case of the odd-dimensional quadric, as a rational function on a Langlands dual projective space, in the spirit of work by R. Marsh and the second author for type A Grassmannians and by both authors for Lagrangian Grassmannians. We also compare this LG model with the one obtained independently by Gorbounov and Smirnov, and we use this comparison to deduce part of a conjecture of the second author for odd-dimensional quadrics
