Predictive performance is assessed using the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC), which takes account of false positive as well as true positive rates. Estimates based on cross-sectional data are much less accurate than those based on panel data, but for Germany, the accuracy of vulnerability predictions is limited even when panel data are used. In part this low accuracy is due to low poverty incidence and high mobility in and out of poverty

    Hybrid simulation of wake vortices of landing aircraft in a turbulent environment

    Wake-vortex evolution during landing of a long range aircraft is investigated in a turbulent environment. The simulations cover final approach, touchdown on the tarmac, and the evolution of the wake after touchdown. An ambient turbulent crosswind and headwind field is generated in a pre-simulation. The wake is initialized using a RANS-LES coupling approach. The further development of the vortical wake is investigated by large-eddy simulation until final decay. Strong three-dimensional deformations appearing after touchdown and linkings with the ground are studied. The downwind vortex is strongly advected with crosswind and decays quickly. The interaction of plate line disturbances and end effects in a turbulent environment leads to irregular decay pattern

    Endogenous Development as a Social Learning Process

    The author perceives endogenous development as a social learning process, which is constructed by all actors involved. To enhance social learning, a methodology called Autodidactic Learning for sustainability is used, in which the perception of both local actors and external actors are highlighted. Reflecting on differences, conflicts and common interests leads to highly motivated debate and shared reflection, which is almost identical with social learning, and flattens the usual hierarchy between local and external actors. The article shows that the energies generated through collective learning can trigger important technical, social and political changes, which take into account the multiple dimensions of local reality

    Cichlid fishes are promising underutilized models to investigate helminth-host-microbiome interactions

    The "Old Friends Hypothesis" suggests insufficient exposure to symbionts hinders immune development, contributing to increased immune-related diseases in the Global North. The microbiome is often the focus; helminths, potentially also offering health benefits, lack attention. Infection and effect of helminths are influenced and perhaps determined by microorganisms. Mechanisms behind parasite-microbiome interactions are poorly understood, despite implications on host health. These interactions are typically studied for single helminth species in laboratory animal models, overlooking helminth diversity. Reviewing research on relationships between helminth and microbial diversity yielded 27 publications; most focused on human or other mammalian hosts, relying on natural exposure rather than experimental helminth inoculation. Only about half investigated host health outcomes. Remaining knowledge gaps warrant considering additional candidate model systems. Given the high helminthiasis burden and species diversity of helminths, we propose seeking models in the Global South, where a considerable proportion of research on diversity aspects of helminth-microbiome interactions took place. Low availability of genomic resources for helminths in the Global South, however, necessitates more integrative helminthological research efforts. Given substantial similarities in immune systems, several fishes are models for human health/disease. More effort could be done to establish this for cichlids, whose representatives in the African Great Lakes provide a well-delineated, closed natural system relevant to human health in view of fish-borne zoonoses and other water-borne parasites. A good baseline exists for these cichlids' genomics, parasitology, and microbiology. We suggest exploring African Great Lake cichlids as model hosts for interactions between microbial diversity, helminth diversity, and host health.     (Neodermata, Monogenea, Polystomatidae), a parasite of the Oklahoma salamander

    Polystomatidae is a monogenean family whose representatives infect mainly (semi)-aquatic tetrapods. Species of Sphyranura Wright, 1879 exhibit ectoparasitism on salamander hosts, with molecular work supporting their inclusion within Polystomatidae, at an early diverging, yet unresolved, position in the clade of otherwise endoparasitic polystomatid parasites of batrachian hosts. Records of representatives of Sphyranura are scarce with genetic data only available for S. oligorchis Alvey, 1933. Based on detailed morphological examination and comparison with type material, we identified worms belonging to Sphyranura infecting Oklahoma salamander (Eurycea tynerensis) as S. euryceae Hughes & Moore, 1943. Along with an amended diagnosis of Sphyranura, we provide the first molecular data for S. euryceae in the form of a mitochondrial genome and nuclear (18S, 28S rRNA) markers. Close morphological similarity between the two species of Sphyranura is reflected in low genetic divergence. Mitochondrial level comparison reveals instances of tRNA gene rearrangements in polystomatids. Although the phylogenetic reconstruction supports Sphyranura as early branching in the lineage of polystomatid monogeneans infecting batrachians, certain nodes remain unresolved

    Picosecond and Femtosecond Laser Machining May Cause Health Risks Related to Nanoparticle Emission

    It is well known that nanoparticles are generated as by-products during ultrashort-pulsed laser ablation. Airborne nanoparticulate matter is well known as potential health risk when workers are exposed during operation of laser machinery. In order to provide safety-related statements on nanoparticles generated during laser micromachining, we studied the particle size distribution dur-ing picosecond (ps) and femtosecond (fs) laser ablation. At the same pulse energy, fs pulses release similar share of nanoparticles (>80%) in the aerosol fraction, with fs compared to ps generating a far higher share 7 nm sized particles during machining of metals (steel, brass) and ceramics (zirconia). These nanoparticles sampled at the workplace have the same chemical composition than the ablated material (iron-chromium-nickel alloy, yttria-doped zirconia). A quantitative risk assessment is car-ried and compared with indicators of toxicological effects of inhaled nanoparticles. The surface equivalent of the nanoparticles dispersed in the air of the workplace is not likely to exceed the sur-face dose which cause inflammatory response in animal lung. But within one 8 h shift, the back-ground level is exceeded by a factor of 20 so that efficient fume extraction is strongly recommended for safe operation during fs and pf laser micromachining even in research laboratories
