@article{hande-etal-kanhope, title = "Hope Speech detection in under-resourced Kannada language", author = "Hande, Adeep and Priyadharshini, Ruba and Sampath, Anbukkarasi and Thamburaj, Kingston Pal and Chandran, Prabakaran and Chakravarthi, Bharathi Raja ", journal={SN Computer Science}, publisher={Springer} }Numerous methods have been developed to monitor the spread of negativity in modern years by eliminating vulgar, offensive, and fierce comments from social media platforms. However, there are relatively lesser amounts of study that converges on embracing positivity, reinforcing supportive and reassuring content in online forums. Consequently, we propose creating an English-Kannda Hope speech dataset, KanHope and comparing several experiments to provide benchmarking for the dataset. The dataset consists of 6,176 user-generated comments in code mixed Kannada crawled from YouTube and manually labelled as bearing hope speech or not-hope speech. In addition, we introduce DC-BERT4HOPE, a dual-channel model that uses the English translation of KanHopeEDI for additional training to promote hope speech detection. The approach achieves a weighted F1-score of 0.756, bettering other models. Henceforth, KanHope aims to instigate research in Kannada while broadly promoting researchers to take a pragmatic approach towards online content that encourages, positive, and supportive

Attack on Titan and The Hunger Games: Dystopias with an Orwellian Foundation

    No full text
Dystopia as a genre has gained the attention of literary scholars as many dystopian works have been analyzed for the elements, reflections, and sociopolitical critiques they carry. 1984 is a popular dystopia, written by George Orwell, which became the stepping stone for other dystopian works. Among these works are The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins, and Attack on Titan, by Hajime Isayama. In this thesis, I explored both texts in the light of 1984, and it became evident that they follow the patterns and integrate elements from the Orwellian dystopia. Then, I explored the character development in all three works, and it showed how the literary medium, the style of the author, and the purpose of the character affect the method and depth of development

Can plasma vitamin C predict survival in stage IV colorectal cancer patients? Results of a prospective cohort study

    No full text
Background and Aims: In light of the inconclusive evidence on the association between vitamin C status and colorectal cancer (CRC) outcome, this study assessed the prognostic value of vitamin C in participants with metastatic CRC (mCRC). Methods: Adults with mCRC and cancer-free controls were recruited in this prospective cohort study to allow for comparison of vitamin C levels with healthy individuals from the same population. Sociodemographic, lifestyle, medical variables, BRAF and KRAS mutations, as well as Vitamin C plasma level and food intake were evaluated. Predictors of diminished vitamin C level were assessed via multivariate logistic regression. Mortality and progression free survival (PFS) among mCRC participants were analyzed based on plasma vitamin C level. Results: The cancer group (n = 46) was older (mean age: 60 ± 14 vs. 42 ± 9.6, p = 0.047) and included more males (29% vs. 19%, p < 0.001) than the cancer-free group (n = 45). There was a non-significant difference in the vitamin C intake between the two groups; however, the mean plasma vitamin C level was lower in the cancer group (3.5 ± 3.7 vs. 9.2 ± 5.6 mg/l, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age and gender, the cancer group was more likely to be deficient compared to the cancer-free group [Adjusted Odds Ratio (95%CI): 5.4 (2.1–14)]. There was a non-significant trend for higher mortality in the vitamin C deficient cancer group (31% vs. 12%, p = 0.139). PFS did not differ based on vitamin C deficiency and patients with BRAF and KRAS mutations did not have significant differences in vitamin C levels. Conclusion: mCRC patients have lower plasma vitamin C levels than healthy controls. The trend toward higher mortality in the vitamin C deficient cancer group was not statistically significant. Whether this phenomenon affects survival and response to treatment warrants further exploration in phase III clinical trials. Long Term Weight Loss Diets and Obesity Indices: Results of a Network Meta-Analysis

    No full text
Background: Scientists have been investigating efficient interventions to prevent and manage obesity. This network meta-analysis (NMA) compared the effect of different diets [moderate macronutrients (MMs), low fat/high carbohydrate (LFHC), high fat/low carbohydrate (HFLC), and usual diet (UD)] on weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) changes at ≥12 months. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, PubMed databases, and the Cochrane Library. We systematically assessed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating dietary interventions on adults (mean BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) receiving active dietary counseling for ≥12 months. We pooled the data using a random-effect NMA. We assessed the quality of the included RCTs using the Cochrane risk of bias (ROB) tool. Results: We included 36 trials, 14 of which compared HFLC with MM diets. Compared with UD, all diets were associated with a significant weight loss (WL) at ≥12 months, HFLC [mean difference in kg (95% CI): −5.5 (−7.6; −3.4)], LFHC [−5.0 (−7.1; −2.9)] and MM [−4.7 (−6.8; −2.7)]. HFLC, compared with MM diet, was associated with a slightly higher WL (of −0.77 kg) and drop in BMI (of −0.36 kg/m2), while no significant difference was detected in other dietary comparisons. WC was lower with all diets compared to UD, with no significant difference across specific diets. There was no significant interaction of the results with the pre-specified sub-groups. The ROB was moderate to high, mostly related to unclear allocation concealment, high dropout rate and unclear or lack of blinding of participants, providers, and outcome assessors. Conclusion: Dietary interventions extending over ≥12 months are superior to UD in inducing weight, BMI and WC loss. HFLC might be associated with a slightly higher WL compared with MM diets. Diagnostic significance of the “lead line”

    No full text
Olovni rub nije bitan simptom intoksikacije olovom; 2. Pri nastajanju olovnog ruba pored olova i sumporovodika sudjeluje vjerojatno i permeabilnost gingivalnog epitela; 3. Čini se da ekspozicija olovu po goduje razvitku zubnog kamenca; 4. Higijenu usne šupljine ima samo sporednu ulogu u stvaranju olovnog rubaIntroducing his paper the author reviews various opinions regarding the diagnostic significance of the »lead line«. In order to clear some controversial points with regard to the formation and diagnostic value of the »lead line«, the author has examined 50 workers of a storage battery plant, and 50 workers in a lead mine and smelting plant. The control group consisted of 50 metal workers which have not been exposed to lead. His results may be summarized as follows: (I) the »lead line« is not an essential symptom of lead poisoning; (2) there are other factors besides lead and hydrogen sulphyde which contribute to the formation of the »lead line«, they are probably related to the physiological state of the epithelial tissue of the gingiva; (3) the oral hygiene plays a secondary role in the formation of the »Iead line«

    No full text
With the existence of mature technologies and modern urban planning necessities, there is a growing public demand to improve the efficiency and transparency of government administrations. This includes the formation of a comprehensive modern spatial land management (cadastre) system having the capacity to handle various types of data in a uniform way—above-terrain and below-terrain—enabling the utilization of land and space for various complex entities. To utilize existing knowledge and systems, an adaptive approach suggests extending and augmenting the existing 2D cadastre systems to facilitate 3D land management capabilities. Following a comprehensive examination of the Survey of Israel’s operative cadastral system that supports 2D land administration, it turned out that it is crucial to outline new concepts, modify existing terms and define specification guidelines. That is, to augment and provide full 3D support to the current operative cadastral system, and to create a common and uniform language for the various parties involved in the preparation of 2D and 3D mutation plans required for modern urban planning needs. This study refers to the legal and technical aspects of Survey of Israel’s CHANIT, which is the legal set of cadastral work processes specifications, focusing on database, data structure, functionality, and regulation gaps while emphasizing on 3D cadastral processes. The outcome is recommendations concerning data structure and functionalities needed to be addressed for the facilitation and implementation of an operative 3D land management system in Israel.OLD Department of GIS Technolog

Abstract: The semiology theory constructed by Roland Barthes has two stages. The first stage is called the linguistic system, while the second stage is called a mythological system. In this paper, the author tries to apply the theory to understand the concept of polygamy in the Qur'an. The result of the application of the theory in Q.S An-Nisa verse 3 is the linguistic system in the word matsna, wa tsulasa, wa ruba 'means not only the number but also means a limit of polygamy permissible. While the mythological system is allowed polygamy but it is more recommended for monogamy. The ideology contained in the verse is the ideology of feminism
