This study was carried out to investigate thrombotic meningoencephalitis in cattle and its etiologic agent Haemophilus somnus. Hundred bulls` preputial cavities were examined bacteriologically, only one isolate of Haemophilus somnus was recovered. Identification of the new isolate was based on morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics and on slide agglutination test, using hyper immune sera againist known isolates. The study indicated that the organism presently identified as Haemophilus somnus-like may normally form a bacterial flora of the bovine prepuce and that dissemination from the male reproductive tract is one possible means of infection in Haemophilus somnusassociated diseases and mainly thrombotic meningoencephalitis. Other bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus species (53%), Micrococcus species (50%), Bacillus species (12%), Streptococcus species (2%), Proteus species (27%) and Rothia species (2%). From 1311 cattle examined at different forms, 74 showed typical signs of thrombotic meningoencephalitis such as hypersensitivity, respiratory distress, stairy coat with hair overgrowth, sharp decreasing in milk production and knuckling at the fetlock in some animals. Some affected animals were dull and 5 staying in dark, wet and cool places for a long time and others were aggressive and fierce. Sera obtained from cattle showing clinical signs of the disease were tested for presence of Haemophilus somnus antibodies using slide agglutination test (SAT), using antigens prepared from six different strains of Haemophilus somnus namely 2, 10, 12, 13a, 13b and the strain isolated during this study "Hadeel". The seropositivity were 13.5%, 85.1%, 20.3%, 18.9%, 64.2% and 85.1% respectively. The prevalence of the disease on the total cattle examined was about 5.65%. Administration of Enrofloxacin (Avitryl -5) subcutaneously to affected cattle at dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight for five successive days and then repeated after 20days gave rise to a successful treatment of the disease. In vitro antibiotic susceptibility testing using standard disk diffusion test, Haemophilus somnus-like organism six strains were tested with six different antibiotics: Sulphonamides, Erythromycin, Gentamicin, Penicillin G, Tetracycline and Enrofloxacin. Results differed from a strain to another but the most effective drugs against the six strains were Enrofloxacin and Gentamicin. Immunogenicity of a Haemophilus somnus bacterin administrated subcutaneously was evaluated in three heifers. The bacterin was pool from the five strains (10, 12, 13a, 13b and Hadeel) and it was a killed bacterin. The heifers were vaccinated with two doses of the bacterin 14 days apart. The three heifers showed various 6 levels of antibodies titers ranging from 1×102 to 1×109 when tested by tube agglutination test (TAT). In conclusion, Haemophilus somnus was proved to be part of bulls` preputial cavities normal flora. Significant responses to treatment with Enrofloxacin were achieved in affected animals and immunity to Haemophilus somnus immunogenicity in cattle can be attained by dead crude vaccin

Mohamed Miloud Gharrafi, author of several collections of poems in Arabic, signed a bilingual anthology of his self-translated poems in 2014, supplemented by unpublished ones, entitled Échos lointains. He has agreed to talk with us about his practice as a writer and translator, and to present his vision of the act of translation and its relationship with creation, both in the case of self-translation and in the case of the translation of other poets, which he has experienced on several occasions. This reflection leads him to question the complex links, in poetry and its translation, between form and meaning. It also leads him to describe his relationship, both of filiation and rupture, with the Arab poetic tradition, as well as his multiple affiliations to various cultural and literary worlds

The comic book Les Mohamed (2011) by French author Jérôme Ruillier is situated in the landscape of migrant bande dessinée, with its own singular characteristics. In this work, the author traced a global portrait of Maghrebi immigrants in France, by adapting the documentary/book Mémoires d’immigrés (1997) by French-Algerian author Yamina Benguigui. As migrant storytellers in general, bande dessinée authors are often the first ‘translators’ of unknown or removed realities, making them accessible to a large public. But what happen when they are translated in their turn? In a first part, this article canvases the process of intersemiotic translation that brought from Mémoires d’immigrés to Les Mohamed. In a second part, it focuses on the verbal/visual aspects of Ruillier’s work and especially on the solutions I adopted in the Italian translation (Se ti chiami Mohamed 2015)

Orality as Aesthetic Device: Articulating Language, Religion, and Authority in Mohamed Akounad’s Tawargit d Imik

    No full text
This article explores Mohamed Akounad\u27s novel Tawargit d imik, which focuses on protagonist Ssi Brahim who struggles to convey the essence of his religious sermons to an exclusively amazigh audience amidst societal opposition. By examining Ssi Brahim\u27s character as the author\u27s alter ego, the study aims to assess the novel\u27s portrayal of religious concerns and activism for Tamazight and identity, particularly in relation to orality. Employing a sociolinguistic approach drawing from Bourdieu\u27s Language and Symbolic Power, the analysis delves into the intersection of religion, authority, and language, placing orality at the heart of their role within the narrative. This study proposes a dual analytical approach, comprising textual and transtextual analyses, in order to unravel the protagonist\u27s journey and explore intertextual connections with sacred texts. Keywords: orality, intertextuality, language, linguistic capital, symbolic capital, Tamazight, religion, powe

The Argumentative Reason between Al-Ghazali and Averroes by Mohamed Ait Hammou [العقل الحجاجي بين الغزالي وابن رشد]: A Book Review (Full text in Arabic)

This article provides a critical scholarly review of Mohamed Ait Hammou's book, "The Argumentative Reason between Al-Ghazali and Averroes." It explores the dialectical tension between the "Argumentative Reason" (Al-’Aql al-Hujjaji) and "Demonstrative Logic" (Al-Burhan) within the Islamic philosophical tradition. The review analyzes how Al-Ghazali utilized a rigorous methodological critique to challenge the Greek ontological monopoly, while Averroes sought to harmonize religion and philosophy through his theory of Interpretation (Ta’wil). By examining the concepts of "Reason" and "Argumentation," the author highlights the ethical and methodological dimensions of the disagreement between these two intellectual giants. Furthermore, the review addresses the dual nature of Averroes’ writings and his critique of Kalam (theology). Ultimately, this work contributes to the contemporary understanding of the Moroccan philosophical school and its efforts to reconstruct the intellectual history of Islamic thought through a modern, critical lens

Eco-conscious upcycling of sugarcane bagasse into flexible polyurethane foam for mechanical & acoustic relevance

    No full text
This study explores the use of sugarcane bagasse (SCB), a byproduct of sugarcane processing, as a bio-filler in the production of flexible polyurethane foam (FPU), focusing on its benefits for both the environment and the economy. By varying the inclusion of SCB waste from 1 to 6 wt%, the research aims to enhance the FPU's mechanical and acoustic characteristics. Techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were utilized to analyze the chemical structure and surface characteristics of both SCB and the FPU/SCB composites. Additionally, tests on gel fraction, density, and mechanical properties were conducted. The results indicate that adding 4 wt% SCB to FPU considerably improved the foam's properties. This modification resulted in a 148.63% increase in apparent density, a 228.47% rise in compressive strength, and a 116.24% boost in tensile strength. Furthermore, sound absorption across various frequency ranges was enhanced compared to the control foam. Additionally, the findings show that SCB effectively shifts sound absorption characteristics to lower frequencies. Specifically, at a low frequency of 500 Hz, the sound absorption coefficient increased to 0.4 with a foam thickness of 20 mm. This demonstrates that SCB can significantly improve FPU's performance, making it an attractive option for applications requiring noise mitigation, such as in the automotive and construction industries, thereby offering a sustainable solution to waste management and materials innovation. This article is published as El-Metwaly, Esraa A., Hadeel E.
