Numerical approach and experimental investigation of a stratified hot water storage tank for domestic hot water production
Thermal stratification within storage tanks plays a critical role in the efficiency of thermal energy storage systems. In this paper, one-dimensional numerical model of a stratified storage tank is developed to simulate the thermal stratification process within a storage tank during the charging and the discharging processes, capturing the temperature distribution inside the storage tank over time. This work investigates the evolution and transient behavior of stratified flows during the heating and cooling process within sensible-heat energy storage systems under ReD=167 and ReD=616 for heating process. For that purpose, an experimental campaign was performed in an instrumented water storage tank to measure the stratification process when a hot water round jet was injected into a slender cylindrical tank filled with an initially uniform hydrostatic water field stabilized at a lower temperature. This information was used to develop a simple 1D model able to be applied during long-term charging/discharging transients of these kind of systems. The 1D model developed was validated against the experiments performed following prototypical charging/discharging tests according to the standard EN16147 and can be used to describe the energy performance of this kind of systems during long-term charging/discharging sequences. The present model provides a reduction of about 5 % of the error of the time of the water cooling process with respect to other models in the literature
Very ductile polymer concrete using carbon nanotubes
Reda Taha, Mahmoud M./0000-0002-3707-9336; Emiroglu, Mehmet/0000-0002-0214-4986WOS: 000456755400042Polymer concrete (PC) is a type of concrete where a polymer is used to replace cement as the binder. PC is an impermeable and chemical resistant concrete with appreciable mechanical properties. However, for most structural engineers, PC advantages do not outweigh its higher cost when compared with normal cement concrete. We report on the production of very ductile PC (measured by tensile strain at failure) with appreciable tensile strength utilizing a hybrid mixture of pristine and carboxyl (COOH) functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 2.0 wt% of epoxy resin. Experimental investigations reveal that COOH functionalization maximizes PC ductility reaching unprecedented 5.5% failure strains and increasing toughness by 184%. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and dynamic modulus analysis indicate an increase in crosslinking density of the epoxy matrix up to 84% due to the carbonyl band formation induced by the COOH functionalization of MWCNTs. The significant improvement in ductility and energy absorption provides a promising platform for creating very ductile PC with attractive properties.
Mums šiandien šie piešiniai yra itin vertingi: beveik nėra duomenų, kokiu būdu von Schmithas surinko savo archeologijos kolekciją, kaip ir kada kasinėjo, tuo tarpu Druskininkų radinių istoriją, jų aplinkybes šiandien jau galime ne tik nujausti, bet ir gana tiksliai datuoti Reikšminiai žodžiai: Prižiūrėtojai; KurortaiHistorians writing on the origins of Druskininkai resort often mentioned the name of Carl von Schmith (circa 1795–1797–1876), the author of Necrolithuanica album: in 1838, a supervisor of Druskininkai mineral waters, von Schmith, together with other two colleagues became the first city servants financed from the state budget. On the other hand, researchers exploring genesis of Druskininkai never paused at analyzing their activities, thus ignoring the features of von Schmith’s service. For this reason, the article aims to reconstruct the life of the author of Necrolithuanica album in Druskininkai: the author includes both – his everyday life related to the supervision of mineral waters (oversight of constructions, registration of guests arriving at the resort, collection of entry tax and so on) and his free time, mostly devoted to his greatest passion - archaeology. Analysis of data sources has revealed that in the period of those few years von Schmith’s archaeological collection was significantly expanded to include not only findings from already known sties around Druskininkai, but also from “archaeological surprises” unearthed during supervision of construction works taking place in the resort. This fact is confirmed by Necrolithuanica album, whose list of 321 illustrations of archaeological items includes 18 drawings from Druskininkai. These drawings are of particular value: there is almost no information about how von Schmith assembled his archaeological collection, when and where excavations took place, in contrast, the history of the Druskininkai findings, circumstances surrounding their recovery, can be not only intuited, but also accurately dated
Motiejus Valančius' list of rare Lithuanian books
[...]The Augustinas Janulaitis (1878–1950) Fund (F267-1492) in the Manuscript Department of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is home to a book from the personal collection of the Samogitian Bishop Motiejus Kazimieras Valančius (in Polish Maciej Kazimierz Wołonczewski, 1801–1875). This archivalia has not yet received any amount of scholarly attention. The book is considered part of the so-called silva rerum, a collection of 18 documents of varying genres and content handwritten by Valančius or someone else in Polish, Russian, Latin and Lithuanian, including a number of statutes, privileges, old legal and ecclesiastical documents, extracts from works of literature and historical tracts, a translation, a poem, and so on. Pending detailed research into the contents of these documents and the paper on which they are written, we should stick to 1834 and 1845 as the dates bookending the creation of this book manuscript (seeing as these dates are recorded therein). In turn, we can assume that the documents were bound into a book some time after 1861 (as referenced by the relief imprint of tree branches and an inscription that reads "Нововеркская фабрика № 6" on the extra blank pages of the book). The publication features one element of this book: a list of 21 Lithuanian books Valančius once read. That is Valančius’ signature. The books are not listed in chronological or alphabetical order. The metrics of the publications are not necessarily written down with any degree of precision. Valančius kept some of the books in his library, he read others elsewhere (for instance, in the Library of the Spiritual Academy of Roman Catholics in St Petersburg). The editions of the books date from between 1579 and 1842 (two books are dated 1579, one is dated 1599, one 1660, one 1629, one 1713, one 1737, one 1745, two 1747, one 1755, three 1781, two 1800, two 1823, one 1829, one 1841, one 1842). Valančius provided a commentary on each of the books on the list, with one exception, Маłdos Krikszczioniszkos (1781, author unknown). Only six of the books received any sort of acclaim from him. Seven of the books he appraised in terms of their language as well. The document published here supports, once again, the findings of researchers who conducted a probe into the library of the Samogitian bishop: (1) Valančius was not an avid bibliophile, but he had a passion for reading and a strong opinion about books (and not just religious books); (2) he would never write any comments on a book down in Lithuanian (using Polish or Latin instead); (3) his opinion would always be spot-on, he was able to critically evaluate the pros and the cons of a book. The list of Lithuanian books that is published here also confirms, and not for the first time, that Valančius treasured the Lithuanian book, just as he considered himself an expert in the Lithuanian language. The book handwritten by Valančius was procured by Eduardas Volteris (in Russian Эдуард Александрович Вольтер; in Latvian Eduards Volters, 1856–1941) during his 1887 ethnographic trip across Lithuania. Later, it made its way into Janulaitis’ archives (as did quite a few of Volter’s other documents). Volter was also the first to mention the most ‘Lithuanian’ element of the book, the list of Lithuanian books drawn up by Valančius that is published here, in the press in 1887

Kriminaliteta v urbanih središčih
Diplomsko delo opisuje problematiko nasilja in kriminalitete v urbanih središčih doma in v tujini, s pomočjo teorije razbitih oken (angl. Broken windows theory). živeti v mestu brez kriminala in nasilja. The present thesis describes the violence and criminality in urban centres at home and abroad, with the help of the Broken windows theory . The theory of broken Windows, as seen by its author, James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling, is based on the assumption that the strategy can be successful in crime prevention only in the case, when we start preventing the problem of crime before it breaks out into a full dimension. There are also authors, who do not agree with the thesis of James q. Wilson and George l. Kelling and their conceptions of the theory of broken windows in full. One of them is Oscar Newman, who claims that the police presence as the highest authority to ensure public order and peace, as the condition is insufficient to achieve the goal that we all want, which is living in a city without crime and violence. It will be possible to achieve the objective only if we include residents who live in the problematic areas in the process of ensuring public order and peace in addition to the police force. When the process of ensuring public order and peace includes residents who live in problematic areas, the feeling of belonging to the community in which they live is woken
Karolina Proniewska: "Do młodego Poety" ("To the young Poet"): a history of a poem
XIX amžiaus poetės Karolinos Praniauskaitės (Karolina vel Karolina Anna Proniewska, 1828-1859) vardas šiandien neatsiejamas nuo kito XIX a. poeto – lietuvių literatūros klasiko Antano Baranausko (Antoni Baranowski, 1835-1902) – biografijos. Pastarajai šiandien „atstovauja“ dienoraštis (poetų asmeninė korespondencija neišliko), poezijai – literatūrinis K. Praniauskaitės ir A. Baranausko dialogas. A. Baranausko dienoraštis arba jo fragmentai skelbti ne kartą. Poetinio dialogo likimas kitoks: fragmentas (vienas A. Baranausko ir vienas K. Praniauskaitės eilėraštis) pirmą kartą paskelbtas Vilniaus periodikoje 1857 m. Po metų į K. Praniauskaitės poezijos rinktinę įtrauktas antrasis eilėraštis A. Baranauskui. XX a. amžiuje publikuoti tik atskiri šio poetinio pašnekesio kūriniai – A. Baranausko arba K. Praniauskaitės kūrybos rinktinėse, prisiminimų ir apybraižų knygose, literatūros antologijose. Pirmą kartą išsamiai rekonstruoti šį dialogą sumanyta 2013 m.: buvo paskelbti du K. Praniauskaitės ir septyni A. Baranausko eilėraščiai. Tačiau ir šį kartą – be pirmojo šio dialogo kūrinio, jo impulso – K. Praniauskaitės eilėraščio „Jaunajam poetui“ („Do młodego poety“). [...] Reikšminiai žodžiai: Karolina Praniauskaitė; Antanas Baranauskas; Karolina Praniauskaitė; Antanas BaranauskasThe name of Karolina or Karolina Anna Proniewska (Lith. Karolina Praniauskaitė, 1828-1859) today is tightly connected to the biography of another Lithuanian classical poet of the nineteenth century Antanas Baranauskas (Antoni Baranowski, 1835-1902). His acquaintance with Proniewska is considered to be one of the most important and even crucial events in Baranauskas’ biography. Proof of this is Baranauskas’ texts: both poetry and ego documents. The latter today is represented by his diary (private correspondence of the writers did not survive), and the poetry – by the literary dialogue between Proniewska and Baranauskas. Baranauskas’ diary or fragments of it were published multiple times. The fate of the poetical dialogue is different: a fragment of it (one poem of Baranauskas and one of Proniewska) was first printed in a Vilnius (Rus. Вильна, Pol. Wilno) periodical in 1857. A year later the second poem by Proniewska written to Baranauskas was included in her published collection of poems. In the following twentieth century only a few isolated pieces of this poetical conversation were published: in collections of works of both Proniewska and Baranauskas, in books of memoirs and essays, and in literary anthologies. For the first time attempts to reconstruct the complete dialog were made in 2013: two poems by Proniewska and seven poems by Baranauskas were published. But this time again they did not include Proniewska’s first work of the dialogue “Do młodego Poety” (“To the Young Poet”), which had been its impulse. Ludicrous misunderstanding ordained that this work so far was considered lost and unknown. For the first time this poem of Proniewska’s was printed on July 24, 1856 (it is over a year after its creation on May 17 or 18, 1855) in the Warsaw periodical Gazeta Warszawska that was widely read in Lithuania as well. But it did not constitute a separate publication, it was only included (in its entirety) as a quotation in the publication Listy z nad brzegów Krożenty (Letters from the Banks of Kražantė) by the well-known historian, publicist, and public activist Michał Baliński (1794-1864). In this work, written in the form of satirical letters (all in all Baliński wrote 21 letters between 1856 and 1860, and 18 thereof were published), Baliński depicts a broad panorama of cultural and scholarly life in Lithuania of that time. Special attention was paid to the belles lettres, especially poetry. Baliński introduced Proniewska’s work in his very first letter. We do not know the way the poem “To the Young Poet” reached the hands of Baliński. The literary draft of his letter that is kept in Kraków, in the Jagiellonian Library, does not supply any answer. On the other hand, Baliński’s archive presents another surprise: several manuscript versions of the poem “To the Young Poet”, and one among them is the autograph of the author Proniewska. We do not know why Baliński did not send back the original manuscript to the author. We do not know why and to whom its manuscript copy (which is preserved in Baliński’s collection) was made. In contrast to the history of this poem’s creation, the history of its dispersion is very murky and it is hardly possible to expect its future reconstruction. And it is still more challenging to give an answer to the most essential question: Why didn’t Proniewska include “To the Young Poet” in her 1858 collection of poems published in Vilnius. Contrary to her other works this poem was simply forgotten immediately after the first publication.[...

Legacy of manuscripts of Stanisław Morawski stored in Vilnius libraries
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Biblioteka; Laiškai; Moravskis, Stanislovas; Rankraštis; Stanislovas Moravskis; Vilnius; 19 amžius; „Civilizuotų moterų fiziognomikos pagrindai“; „Dainos“; „Egoizmas“; „Politinės fantazijos“; „Ustronės Atsiskyrėlio pastabos apie 1848 metų įvykius“; 19th century; Letter; Library; Manuscript; Moravskis, Stanislovas; Morawski, Stanislaw; Stanislaw Morawski; Vilnius; Wilno; „Egoizm“; „Piesni“; „Polityczne mrzonki“; „Uwagi Pustelnika w Ustroniu o wypadkach 1848 roku“; „Zasady fizyognomiki kobiet cywilizowanych“The manuscript heritage of Stanisław Morawski (1802–1853), a student of Vilnius University, doctor and writer, who was particularly famous for his memoir works, once consisted of several dozens of volumes and notebooks. After his death many manuscripts were made public. In 1944, when Krasiński Library was bombarded during the Warsaw Uprising, the manuscripts burnt up. Today the registry of Morawski’s works is also available; according to it, twenty-one texts, including texts that have not been published before, constitute the creative heritage of the memoirist. The author of the paper managed to find part of Morawski’s texts that had been considered lost – their draft versions – in the Manuscript Departments of Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and the Library of Vilnius University. Found draft texts unexpectedly pointed out a particularly unpleasant circumstance: the authentic texts of Morawski were actually unknown to us, because they were expurgated when publishing. The main publishers of Morawski – A. Czartkowski and H. Mościcki – made the greatest damage. They handled the memoirist’s manuscripts like their own property, without scruples; they not only “cut” them, but also changed their system. The manuscripts discussed in the paper fill in the gaps of Morawski’s creative heritage. His study “Kilka myśli o dowcipie” [Some Thoughts about Wit] has not yet been found. A manuscript of the old Lithuanian chronicle, copied and redrawn by Morawski at the turn of 1850–1851 is not known. If these texts still exist, they should be obviously searched in the manuscript departments of Vilnius
Story of Mikalojus Akelaitis's manuscript "Opisanie Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego" (1862)
Paryžiuje anonimiškai išspausdinta monografija "Galicya i Kraków pod panowaniem austryackiem" - tapo Akelaičio darbo prototipu. Išsamiai analizuojami rankraštį sudarantys penki netolygios apimties skyriai: 1) "Kraj i Mieszkańcy" (59 lapai), 2) "Sprawa włościańska na Litwie" (133 lapai), 3) "Kościół" (106 lapai), 4) "Oświata" (47 lapai), 5) "Sądownictwo i Administracja" (25 lapai). Akelaičio akiratyje - Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės žlugimo procesas ir naujas Lietuvos politinis, ekonominis bei juridinis būvis Rusijos imperijos valdžioje. Bendra autoriaus nuostata paprasta - idealizuojama bendros Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybės praeitis ir smerkiama Rusijos valdžios vykdoma politika. Tekstas netolygus, fragmentiškas, pasigendama logiško sukauptos medžiagos dėstymo plano: iš pradžių itin santūrus, objektyvus, "statistinis", taigi pretenduojantis į moksliškumą, ilgainiui, ypač pradedant 3–iuoju skyriumi "Kościół", vis labiau primena publicistinį, labai emocionalų rašinį. Veikale jaučiama politinė įtampa, priešsukiliminės nuotaikos, tad jis gerokai politizuotas. The contradiction stems from Akelaitis's personal features as well as his way of life, which can be best described in two words: research and politics. [...] One of his large-scale and most outstanding works in history written in 1862 during his first emigration to Paris is Opisanie Wielkiego Ksiestwa Litewskiego (further referred to as OWKL). The genesis and analysis of this particular work kept in the Polish Library in Paris (Biblioteka Polska w Paryžu, also Bibliothèque Polonaise à Paris, further referred to as BPP) has become the key axis of this paper. [...] OWWKL has five sections: 1) "Kraj i Mieszkancy" [the country and its people], 2) "Sprawa wlosciariska na Litwie" [the issue of peasantry in Lithuania], 3) "Košciol" [Church], 4) "Oswiata" [Education], 5) "Sadownictwo i Administracja" [Courts of Justice and Administration]. [...] In section 1 most attention is devoted to the geography of the country, its statistical data and admin istrative division. In section 2 Akelaitis gave an exhaustive description of the law of 1861 abolishing serfdom and characterised the members of its editorial board. In section 3 the author expresses his idealistic attitude towards the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and tolerance of its rulers. Section 4 deals with one of the most important issues of Russian politics in the country. Section 5 is the last and the shortest; it is also incomplete. Differently from the two previous sections, thedevelopment of ideas in the section is similar to the first two sections: in legal and administrative areas he praises the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and resents the laws and the court system imposed by Russia.[...
