Allievo di Scamozzi, di cui completò le Procuratie Nuove in piazza San Marco a Venezia, Longhena con la sua opera segna profondamente il carattere della Venezia del Seicento. Oltre alla chiesa di Santa Maria della Salute, sua opera più rappresentativa e nota, progettò, sempre per la città lagunare, le chiese degli Scalzi e dell'Ospedaletto, le facciate per la Scuola dei Carmini, lo scalone di San Giorno Maggiore, e tra gli edifici civili, Ca' Pesaro e Ca' Rezzonico, entrambi su Canal Grande.
