Global subjective memorability and the strength-based mirror effect
Between-list manipulations of memory strength through repetition commonly generate a mirror effect, with more hits, and fewer false alarms for strengthened items. However, this pattern is rarely seen with within-list manipulations of strength. Three experiments investigated the conditions under which a within-list mirror effect of strength (items presented once or thrice) is observed. In Experiments 1 and 2, we indirectly manipulated the overall subjective memorability of the studied lists by varying the proportion of non-words. A within-list mirror effect was observed only in Experiment 2, where a higher proportion of non-words was presented in the study list. In Experiment 3, the presentation duration for each item (0.5 s versus 3 s) was manipulated between groups with the purpose of affecting subjective memorability: A within-list mirror effect was observed only for the short-presentation durations. Thus, across three experiments, we found the within-list mirror effect only under conditions of poor overall subjective memorability. We propose that when the overall subjective memorability is low, people switch their response strategy on an item-by-item basis, and that this generates the observed mirror effect. <br/
Implicit learning of conjunctive rule sets: An alternative to artificial grammars
A single experiment is reported that investigated implicit learning using a conjunctive rule set applied to natural words. Participants memorized a training list consisting of words that were either rare-concrete and common-abstract or common-concrete and rare-abstract. At test, they were told of the rule set, but not told what it was. Instead, they were shown all four word types and asked to classify words as rule-consistent words or not. Participants classified the items above chance, but were unable to verbalize the rules, even when shown a list that included the categories that made up the conjunctive rule and asked to select them. Most participants identified familiarity as the reason for classifying the items as they did. An analysis of the materials demonstrated that conscious micro rules (i.e., chunk knowledge) could not have driven performance. We propose that such materials offer an alternative to artificial grammar for studies of implicit learning
Effects of intradermal injection of atrial natriuretic peptide.
Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) causes mast cell degranulation in rats in vivo and in vitro but is bronchodilator in humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the wheal and flare dose-response to intradermal injection of alpha-human ANP in normal humans. Eight normal subjects received five 30 microliters injections containing 1, 10, 39, 78, 117 pmol ANP and one each of normal saline, histamine 675 pmol and substance P 30 pmol. Maximum ANP flare response was greater but not significantly than that to saline at 1.55 +/- 0.6 (mean +/- s.e. mean) compared with 0.42 +/- 0.17 cm2, but much less than to histamine 9.86 +/- 0.97 or to substance P 12.5 +/- 1.2. Maximum ANP wheal response was significantly greater than that to saline at 0.38 +/- 0.08 compared with 0.18 +/- 0.05 cm2 (difference between means 0.20, 95% CI 0.05, 0.35), but much less than to histamine 0.75 +/- 0.06 or to substance P 1.05 +/- 0.08 cm2. No dose-response to ANP was demonstrated, though responses to the highest dose differed significantly from those to the lowest dose studied. We conclude that human cutaneous responses to ANP differ from those of animals and that the skin is less responsive than other tissues in humans
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Calibration of metacognitive judgments: insights from the underconfidence-with-practice effect
Research on calibration typically compares mean judgments-of-learning (JOLs) made on a 0- 100% scale with mean recall to determine whether there is overconfidence (JOL >recall), underconfidence (JOL<recall), or realism (JOL=recall). This research is founded on the assumption that JOLs directly reflect underlying representations of probability, which, if true, should mean that results from studies employing per cent JOL scales will generalize to other measures of subjective probability. We report four experiments that tested this assumption in the context of the underconfidence-with-practice (UWP) effect, the finding that JOLs underestimate recall on second and subsequent study-test cycles of multi-cycle paired- associate learning tasks (e.g., A. Koriat, L. Sheffer, & H. Ma?ayan, 2002). In particular, after replicating the standard UWP effect with scale JOLs in Experiment 1, we tested whether the effect would generalize to a binary JOL judgment in Experiment 2 and/or a binary betting judgment in Experiment 3. In neither experiment was the UWP effect observed. Finally, to ensure that memorial and metamemorial evidence was equated for each judgment type, each item was assigned both a scale JOL and a binary betting JOL in Experiment 4. UWP was observed for the 0-100% scale JOL, but not the binary JOL. Together, the results suggest that JOLs may not directly reflect subjective probability but rather reflect an initial yes/no decision about future recall followed by a confidence rating
Evidence for late polynesian colonization of New Zealand: University of Waikato radiocarbon measurements
We present radiocarbon determinations for 271 New Zealand archaeological samples measured at the University of Waikato Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory between 1975 and 1995. A discard protocol is applied to the series and the list culled to winnow the acceptable dates from those that may incorporate error. None of the 221 acceptable ¹⁴C determinations older than 600 BP (in the case of terrestrial samples) or 930 BP (in the case of marine and estuarine shell) extends beyond cal AD 1250. This conclusion supports the short chronology model of New Zealand prehistory presented by Anderson (1991)
Exploring Emptiness: An Investigation of MA and MU in My Sonic Composition Practice
The commentary investigates Japanese aesthetics of space, silence and emptiness - ma and mu - that informed my compositional practice during the research period 2012 - 2015. The portfolio comprises text compositions and sound installations in which forms of micro events and sustained events are employed. Throughout, the emphasis is on my personal engagement with, and manifestation of emptiness that concerns a particular model of listening and perception.
Chapter 1 discusses six primary research areas: ma and mu, material, text, form, listening and perception. Firstly, I introduce ma and mu by examining noh culture and Zeami's teaching of senu hima (where there is no-action) in the context of my personal approaches to music. The following subjects are then used to contextualise my PhD practice by means of examples from various composers and visual artists. Here, these particular and enigmatic concepts are explored through Japanese art as well as Western contemporary works by Alvin Lucier, Eliane Radigue and those of the Wandelweiser collective.
Part 2 provides contextual commentaries on selected compositions from the portfolio that mostly articulate my aesthetics in relation to the topics covered in Chapter 1. koso koso addresses my methodologies to investigate the essence of senu hima, followed by treow that discusses my approach to materials and the importance of space. I move on to grade two and grade two extended in order to examine text scores, and then, look into Espèces d'espaces 03 and 04 as examples of musical forms that I employ.
Finally, listening and perception are investigated through the compositions gnome and con.de.structuring. Throughout, I describe how my works explore emptiness as a result of my particular emphasis on listening over composing
The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function
This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Modeling and simulating chemical reactions
Many students are familiar with the idea of modeling chemical reactions in terms of ordinary differential equations. However, these deterministic reaction rate equations are really a certain large-scale limit of a sequence of finer-scale probabilistic models. In studying this hierarchy of models, students can be exposed to a range of modern ideas in applied and computational mathematics. This article introduces some of the basic concepts in an accessible manner and points to some challenges that currently occupy researchers in this area.
