New Roads for Patron-Driven E-books:Collection Development and Technical Services Implications of a Patron-Driven Acquisitions Pilot at Rutgers
No full textCollection development librarians have long struggled to meet user demands for new titles. Too often, required resources are not purchased, while some purchased resources do not circulate. E-books selected through patron-driven plans are a solution but present new challenges for both selectors and catalogers. Radical changes to traditional technical services workflows are required, and selectors must modify the selection process to give more choice to the user. The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei
No full textThis thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

No full textLo scritto rilegge in filigrana, sotto forma di metafora, il percorso che gli studenti del Corso di Morfologia Urbana e Tipologie Edilizie hanno seguito attraverso l'esercitazione l'itinerario progettuale compiuto come viandanti del Politecnico con il viaggio che gli antichi pellegrini percorrevano lungo la via francigena per raggiungere la desiderata meta. L'esercitazione degli studenti è consistita nel collocare "figure geometriche" lungo il tracciato della francigena all'interno del tessuto storico della città di Piacenza. Attraverso una sequenza di tre diverse azioni progettuali: di aggregazioni di forme pure, secondo diversi sistemi (lineari, centrali, radiali); di reinterpretazioni del luogo per mezzo di operazioni di addizioni, sottrazioni, incisioni, sovrapposizioni ed infine di studio dei principi costruttivi del manufatto si sono configurate delle nuove scene urbane, dove semplici azioni di modificazione puntuali e piccoli spostamenti permettono di avere un nuovo senso dell'uso dello spazio pubblico

No full textIn this well-documented, bilingual, and richly illustrated catalogue, published for the long-anticipated exhibition Reflected Beauty: Chinese Reverse Glass Paintings from the Mei Lin Collection at the University Museum and Art Gallery of the University of Hong Kong (September 2021-January 2022), the authors give us a profound insight into the phenomenon of reverse painting on glass and mirror paintings, with a particular focus on those from the Mei Lin Collection assembled by the Sinologist, author, and translator Rupprecht Mayer and his wife Haitang Mayer-Liem. Composed of over one hundred works acquired in East Asia between 1968 and 2012, this is one of the world's most important collections of Chinese reverse glass paintings from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.Modern and Contemporary Studie

Cobalt-Catalyzed Oxidase C-H/N-H Alkyne Annulation:Mechanistic Insights and Access to Anticancer Agents
No full textCp*-free cobalt-catalyzed alkyne annulations by C-H/N-H functionalizations were accomplished with molecular O2 as the sole oxidant. The user-friendly oxidase strategy proved viable with various internal and terminal alkynes through kinetically relevant C-H cobaltation, providing among others step-economical access to the anticancer topoisomerase-I inhibitor 21,22-dimethoxyrosettacin. DFT calculations suggest that electronic effects control the regioselectivity of the alkyne insertion step.</p
Risk Characteristics of Real Estate Related Securities--An Extension of Liu and Mei (1992)
No full textThis study extends from Liu and Mei (1992) by further investigation of assets, real estate related securities, which includes both equity and mortgage real estate investment trusts (REITs), the stocks of builder- and owner-companies, and mortgage-backed securities (MBSs). There are five major findings. First, expected excess returns of real estate related securities are more predictable than the expected excess returns of value-weighted stocks and bonds. Second, right market timing is important to investors since evidence shows that the risk premiums of real estate related securities vary substantially over time. Third, real estate market conditions significantly influence bonds and MBSs. Fourth, MBSs are more similar to bonds than mortgage REITs. In addition, returns on mortgage REITs resemble both stocks and bonds. Finally, real estate stocks have a very high sensitivity toward stock market portfolio. This suggests that real estate stocks are not good instruments to help diversify stock risk.
Cobalt‐Catalyzed C−H Functionalizations by Imidate Assistance with Aryl and Alkyl Chlorides
No full textA catalytic system comprising the inexpensive cobalt(II) acetylacetonate [Co(acac)(2)] and an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand enabled versatile C-H arylations by oxazoline assistance. The broadly applicable, low-valent cobalt catalyst displayed a wide substrate scope, and even proved applicable to challenging C-H alkylations with beta-hydrogen-containing primary and secondary alkyl chlorides. The power of the cobalt-catalyzed C-H arylation protocol was among others reflected by facile C-H activation at a room temperature of 23 degrees C, and efficient late-stage diversification, providing access to bioactive biaryls.European Research Council under the European Community [307535]; CS
