Effect of a baffle divertor structure on neutral hydrogen and helium transport in the Large Helical Device
Control of the peripheral plasma density is one of urgent tasks for improving the plasma performance in the Large Helical Device. Test modules with a baffle divertor structure have been installed in the inboard side of the torus for controlling the neutral density in the plasma periphery. Neutral hydrogen and helium transport in an original open divertor and the baffle divertor configurations have been monitored with filtered CCD cameras to observe the intensity profile of visible emission by neutral hydrogen (Hα) and helium (HeI). A detailed analysis using a three-dimensional neutral particle transport simulation code reasonably explains the dependence of the observed intensity profiles on the divertor and the magnetic configurations. It also predicts that the baffle divertor significantly reduces the emission of neutral hydrogen in the plasma periphery in the inboard side, and the compression of neutral helium density by the baffle divertor is comparable to that of hydrogen.journal articl
Improvement of electron temperature and density accuracy in Thomson scattering diagnostics by an accumulation of 100 laser pulses within 5 milliseconds
In order to measure the electron temperature and density in high-electron-temperature and low-density plasmas, improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio of the Thomson scattering measurement signal in the Large Helical Device has been tried. One hundred laser pulses of about 1 J in 5 ms were injected at 50 μs intervals into plasmas in an almost steady state. By averaging the scattered signals obtained from the same plasma and the same location, the noise in the signals and the error in the background level were also reduced. When the number of signals to be averaged was large, the scattering of the electron temperature profile was small and the magnitude of the error also became small.journal articl

H-Mode-Like Discharge under the Presence of 1/1 Rational Surface at Ergodic Layer in LHD
H-mode-like discharge was found in LHD with a full Bt field of 2.5 T at an outwardly shifted configuration of Rax = 4.00 m where the m?n = 1?1 rational surface is located at the ergodic layer. The H-mode-like discharge was triggered by changing the PNBI from 9 MW to 5 MW in a density range of 4-8 × 1013 cm-3, followed by a clear density rise, ELM-like Hα bursts, and a reduction of magnetic fluctuation. These H-mode-like features vanished with a small radial movement of the 1?1 surface.journal articl

Electron temperature and density measurement by Thomson scattering with a high repetition rate laser of 20 kHz on LHD
0000-0003-2217-6018Thomson scattering measurements with a high-repetition-rate laser have commenced in the Large Helical Device. As an example of the fast phenomena captured by this diagnostic system, measurements at a 20 kHz repetition-rate in hydrogen pellet-injected plasmas are presented. Signal processing methods for this measurement have been developed and electron temperature profiles with almost 70 spatial points were evaluated at time intervals of 50 μs. After Raman scattering calibration, electron density profiles were derived. Fast changes in the electron temperature and density profiles within 1 ms were observed.journal articl
