THE COMPANY S. H. GUTMANN D. D. AT THE TIME OF THE GREAT DEPRESSION (1929-1934)
Rad istražuje posljedice koje je velika svjetska gospodarska kriza (1929-1934) imala za poslovanje i vlasničku strukturu krupnog, pretežno drvoprerađivačkog poduzeća “S. H. Gutmann d. d.” sa sjedištem u Belišću, koje je u Slavoniji djelovalo od 1884. do 1941.The paper investigates the consequences that the Great Depression (1929-1934) had for the business and the ownership structure of the large, predominantly wood-processing company S. H. Gutmann d. d., headquartered in Belišće, which operated in Slavonia in the period between 1884 and 1941.
At the time of the Great Depression, from 1930 to 1934, the Gutmanns subsisted on the acquisitions of the family’s second generation, i.e. on the acquisitions resulting from the policy of buying their own forests. The company did not have to pay for the raw materials it needed to launch its production, and the forests they exploited were bought and paid for, as we have already mentioned, in the previous period. The companies that were not so lucky, on the other hand, had to struggle with sudden price drops and long-term forest exploitation contracts whose prices were set at the time of conjuncture.
A change from affirmative to negative attitude can be observed in the state’s treatment of large industrial companies owned by foreigners after the Great Depression. This is confirmed by the regulations of the National Bank of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia that proscribed that credits could be granted only to domestic entrepreneurs, as well as by the regulations of the Ministry of Finance that monitored all share transactions carried out by foreign owners
Relationship between the Company S. H. Gutmann d. d. and Trade Unions

Analizira provedbu Zakona o zaštiti radnika i razvojni put sindikalnih organizacija od ilegalnoga do legalnoga djelovanja. The paper investigates the relationship of the largest wood industrial company in Central Europe S. H. Gutmann d.d. with trade unions that were active in the company. Salomon Heinrich Gutmann d. d. Trade Company played a very important role in the overall wood industry of Yugoslavia between the two World Wars, and it had an indispensable role in constructing of plants such as saw-mills, wood derivative production plants and chemical wood processing plants. All of this resulted in abundant experience of the management regarding the struggle with the labour force. After the breakup of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, the company entered a stage of instability. Those rather adverse circumstances directly affected political and social changes, as well as changes in the managerial structure of the company.
The new government of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians decided to institutionalize workers’ rights through the Labour Protection Law granting the unions the freedom to act. Trade unions in Croatia were not developed, and even though they were granted rights by a government act, they still remained under the control of employers. As far as labour and union relationships were concerned, ambivalence within the labour force could be felt as well as the ambivalence within the union movement itself during the whole period between the two Wars. Division of the trade union organization into social-democratic, communist and nationalist unions disclosed many processes taking place in Europe at the same time. In the framework of the union movements and rising violence in everyday communication between the members of the opposing groups, one can learn about the movements happening in the wider area, within which the company as an organizational structure became more important than its former owners. A change from affirmative to negative attitude can be observed in the state’s treatment of large industrial companies owned by foreigners after the Great Depression. This deterioration can be seen in the company’s relationship with the nationalist unions, which were linked to the government
A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1
Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1
MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
H-2 NMR calculations on polynuclear transition metal complexes: on the influence of local symmetry and other factors
It is now well-known that H-2 solid-state NMR techniques can bring a better understanding of the interaction of deuterium with metal atoms in organometallic mononuclear complexes, clusters or nanoparticles. In that context, we have recently obtained experimental quadrupolar coupling constants and asymmetry parameters characteristic of deuterium atoms involved in various bonding situations in ruthenium clusters, namely D4Ru4(CO)(12), D2Ru6(CO)(18) and other related compounds Gutmann et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2010, 132, 11759, which are model compounds for edge-bridging (mu-H) and face-capping (mu(3)-H) coordination types on ruthenium surfaces. The present work is in line with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electric field gradient (EFG) tensors in deuterated organometallic ruthenium complexes. The comparison of quadrupolar coupling constants shows an excellent agreement between calculated and observed values. This confirms that DFT is a method of choice for the analysis of deuterium NMR spectra. Such calculations are achieved on a large number of ruthenium clusters in order to obtain quadrupolar coupling constants characteristic of a given coordination type: terminal-D, eta(2)-D-2, mu-D, mu(3)-D as well as mu(4)-D and mu(6)-D (i.e. interstitial deuterides). Given the dependence of such NMR parameters mainly on local symmetry, these results are expected to remain valid for large assemblies of ruthenium atoms, such as organometallic ruthenium nanoparticles

The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist
angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H.
Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods
and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of
and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the
form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the
modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction
with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin,
this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a
modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European
and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens,
Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the
angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate
Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is
distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist
angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine
responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being,
specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of
intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the
Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or
evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and
suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous
limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature

"A Lesson on a Tortoise" and D. H. Lawrence\u27s earliest crisis of social identity
The short story "A Lesson on a Tortoise", written by D. H. Lawrence in 1909, has traditionally been disregarded by criticism as a very minor piece of work. This paper aims to show that the story has a threefold importance: firstly as an autobiographical portrait of Lawrence\u27s activities as a teacher in Croydon; secondly as an example of Lawrence\u27s ability to use realistic techniques; and thirdly as a reflection of the author\u27s crisis of social identity. The paper concentrates on the last aspect and traces the personal and intellectual facets which came to shape Lawrence\u27s ideas on the subject
