Mustafa Kutlu handled the relationship between city and architecture in different ways in his works. The author, who is known as a storyteller, focuses on traditional and modern architecture in his essays and travel writings on cities and architecture. In his stories, he tells the stories in a fictional way, through the narrator and the characters; The author, who narrates directly in his own voice in his essays and travel writings, prefers traditional architecture to modern architecture. According to the author, along with the lost morality in the modern city, there is also a lack of style in architecture and all cities look similar to each other. Kutlu emphasizes that in traditional Islamic architecture, every house has a garden, even if it is small. Kutlu says that in traditional cities, people maintain their relationship with nature, but in modern cities, this relationship is interrupted by concreting, and proposes the establishment of new cities. In new cities to be established, the population will be reduced and architectural construction will be horizontal. Each of the one- or two-storey houses will have a garden and the buildings will be designed according to the climatic conditions. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between city and architecture in Mustafa Kutlu's works. For this purpose, the author's works were examined and classified under different headings, paying attention to chronology

Chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH) are often managed with a burr-hole craniostomy and drainage, but surgery is associated with elevated mortality, morbidity, and recurrence. Despite reports of steroid use for such patients, its efficacy and feasibility are still debated. We present our patient series treated with low-dose hydrocortisone. We retrospectively reviewed data from patients treated with hydrocortisone between 2017 and 2023. Demographics, clinical and radiological data were collected. Of 27 patients identified, nine required a burr-hole craniotomy for an average volume of 120.23 cm3, average midline shift of 9mm, and neurological deficits. Eighteen met the criteria for inclusion. The mean age was 78.5 years; 13 were male. None had severe symptoms requiring urgent intervention. Except for one with a Karnofsky Performance Scale score of 70, all could maintain normal activity before treatment. The mean baseline volume was 52.6 cm3. Midline shift, present in six, averaged 6.8mm. Patients underwent treatment for an average of 5.15 months. Nine had complete resolution within 3 months, while nine required longer treatment, including one who needed 9 months for a re-bleed after a fall. Paired t-tests indicated significant reductions in hematoma volumes at the second week (p 0.01), first month (p < 0.0001), and third month (p < 0.0001) of treatment. No complications occurred and the post-treatment Karnofsky scores ranged from 90 to 100. Treatment for cSDH should be tailored to the patient. Low-dose hydrocortisone is safe and effective in asymptomatic patients, those with mild to moderate symptoms, and those who are either unsuitable for or decline surgical intervention. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.The Yeditepe University Open Access System is a compendium of indexed publications. The Role of Viruses in the Glioma Tumor Microenvironment: Immunosuppressors or Primers for Anti-Tumor Immunity?

No full text
The WHO estimates that nearly 10–15% of cancers have a known viral etiology, although this number is likely an underestimate. In glioblastoma (GBM), the most common primary brain malignancy, viral associations have been proposed and investigated without a definitive etiology. Viral–host interactions are known to alter cellular growth and stem cell programming, as well as modulate innate immune signaling. However, in GBM, the multifaceted role of endogenous or exogenous viral expression remains unclear. Here, we provide a review of common viral associations in GBM and discuss how these viruses modulate intrinsic cellular processes to enhance anti-viral immune response or suppress anti-tumor immunity

In this research, it was aimed to examine the effect of insight and cognitive flexibility on psychological hardiness. In the study group, there are a total of 390 participants, 248 women (Mean.age = 25.07, Sd = 5.48) and 142 men (Mean.age = 25.55, Sd = 5.23), aged between 18-44. Insight Scale, Cognitive Flexibility Scale and Psychological Hardiness Scale were used to collect data. Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression analysis were used to analyze the data. It was found that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between Insight Scale scores and the Cognitive Flexibility Scale scores (r =.499, p <.01). It was determined that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between Psychological Hardiness Scale scores with Insight Scale scores (r =.450, p <.01) and Cognitive Flexibility Scale scores (r =.599, p <.01). Also, it was observed that the Insight Scale scores (? =.201, t = 4.391, p =.000) and Cognitive Flexibility Scale scores (? =.498, t = 10.872, p =.000) significantly predicted the Psychological Hardiness Scale scores. According to the results of the research, insight and cognitive flexibility explain 38% of the total variance of psychological hardiness. The results of the research showed that the cognitive structures in particular and the psychological structures in general have an interactive and dynamic structure, and therefore the obvious importance of understanding each concept in psychological support services offered to people. © 2020 The Author(s)

Machine learning applications in craniosynostosis diagnosis and treatment prediction: a systematic review

No full text
Craniosynostosis refers to the premature fusion of one or more of the fibrous cranial sutures connecting the bones of the skull. Machine learning (ML) is an emerging technology and its application to craniosynostosis detection and management is underexplored. This systematic review aims to evaluate the application of ML techniques in the diagnosis, severity assessment, and predictive modeling of craniosynostosis. A comprehensive search was conducted on the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using predefined keywords related to craniosynostosis and ML. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed studies in English that investigated ML algorithms in craniosynostosis diagnosis, severity assessment, or treatment outcome prediction. Three independent reviewers screened the search results, performed full-text assessments, and extracted data from selected studies using a standardized form. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Of the thirteen papers examined on the application of ML to the identification and treatment of craniosynostosis, two papers were dedicated to sagittal craniosynostosis, five papers utilized several different types of craniosynostosis in the training and testing of their ML models, and six papers were dedicated to metopic craniosynostosis. ML models demonstrated high accuracy in identifying different types of craniosynostosis and objectively quantifying severity using innovative metrics such as metopic severity score and cranial morphology deviation. The findings highlight the significant strides made in utilizing ML techniques for craniosynostosis diagnosis, severity assessment, and predictive modeling. Predictive modeling of treatment outcomes following surgical interventions showed promising results, aiding in personalized treatment strategies. Despite methodological diversities among studies, the collective evidence underscores ML's transformative potential in revolutionizing craniosynostosis management
