    INTEGRATING HEAT RESILIENCE IN LOW CARBON DOMESTIC RETROFITS IN THE UK: A CASE STUDY APPROACH

    The drive to decarbonise the UK housing stock has led to extensive retrofitting of older dwellings, improving energy efficiency but raising concerns about unintended summertime overheating. This dissertation investigates the resilience of a retrofitted 1930s semi-detached house in Rose Hill, Oxford, occupied by two residents aged over 70, under both current and projected future climates. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining highresolution environmental monitoring, occupant surveys and diaries, and dynamic thermal simulations in Design Builder. Monitoring during summer 2025 revealed generally stable conditions compliant with CIBSE TM59 criteria, yet critical vulnerabilities emerged during the July heatwave, when living-room temperatures peaked at 34.9 °C, almost 9 °C above adaptive comfort thresholds. Bedrooms demonstrated reduced diurnal variation but retained heat overnight, limiting opportunities for restorative cooling. Occupant feedback highlighted reliance on low-cost strategies such as blinds, night ventilation, and fans, which proved insufficient during prolonged hot spells. Dynamic simulations broadly aligned with mean conditions but consistently underestimated peak temperatures, underscoring the limitations of standard weather files and simplified behavioural assumptions. Scenario testing of passive interventions showed that external shading significantly reduced solar gains, increased thermal mass delayed peak loads, and a combined strategy halved TM59 exceedance hours under 2050 climate projections. These findings illustrate the retrofit paradox: measures designed to conserve winter heat can exacerbate summer overheating, with older occupants especially at risk. The study concludes that climate-resilient retrofits require integrated design approaches that combine insulation and airtightness with shading, secure ventilation, and adaptive comfort strategies. Policy frameworks such as EPCs and Net Zero roadmaps must therefore evolve to embed overheating risk assessments and promote passive resilience alongside energy efficiency. By situating empirical evidence within lived experience and forward-looking simulations, this research contributes to the urgent agenda of ensuring that UK retrofits deliver not only low-carbon performance but also safe, comfortable, and health-protective homes in a warming climate

    The social correlates of value consensus

    This paper examines societal value consensus, or the extent to which individuals within a culture share similar values. This topic has been extensively theoretically discussed, but has received limited empirical attention. This paper explores the social variables of economic equality, religiosity and religious homogeneity and their relation to value consensus. Publicly available data from the latest wave of World Values Survey (N = 73,256), CIA world factbook and the World Bank World Development Indicators are used for analysis. Results reveal that value consensus is not correlated with religiosity, religious homogeneity or economic equality.     Background: Rhododendron arboreum Sm. (Burans) is a Himalayan medicinal plant rich in bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties. It is traditionally used for conditions like nasal bleeding and gynecological disorders. This study evaluates its oral and local use in managing Shweta Pradara (leucorrhoea) as a safe Ayurvedic alternative. Objectives: To assess and compare the therapeutic potential of Rhododendron arboreum Sm. as an oral and combination therapy (oral + local) in reducing symptoms of Shweta Pradara (leucorrhoea). Materials and Methods: This was an Open-Label, Comparative Clinical Study which include 30 female patients diagnosed with Shweta Pradara. The study was conducted under 2 groups. In group A-15 patients received Yoni Dhavana (vaginal douching) with R. arboreum decoction and group B - 15 patients received both Sharkara Kalpana (syrup) orally and Yoni Dhavana (vaginal douching) locally. Treatment administered for a specific period (typically 21–30 days depending on protocol) and assessment is made by different subjective and objective parameters. Results: Both groups showed improvement in symptoms of Shweta Pradara. Group B (oral + local therapy) demonstrated significantly better results in reducing abnormal discharge, relieving itching, controlling odour, and restoring vaginal health. Conclusion: Rhododendron arboreum\u27s diverse pharmacological properties and traditional usage underscore its potential in treating gynecological conditions like Shweta Pradara. Its application in both systemic and local therapies offer a holistic approach, aligning with Ayurvedic principles and providing a natural alternative to conventional treatments
