Change in colour appearance of small defocused lights
Small long wavelength lights (≤ 1’ arc) change colour appearance with positive defocus, appearing yellow or white. I investigated influences of longitudinal chromatic aberration and monochromatic aberrations on colour appearance of small narrow band lights. Seven cyclopleged participants viewed a small light (1’ arc diameter, λmax range 510 - 628 nm) centred within a 4.6’ black annulus and surrounded by a uniform white field under photopic light levels. An optical trombone varied focus. Participants were required to vary the focus by moving the optical trombone in either positive or negative direction and report when they noticed a change in appearance of the defocused narrow band light. Longitudinal chromatic aberration was controlled using a Powell achromatizing lens and its doublet and triplet components that neutralized, doubled and reversed the eye’s chromatic aberration, respectively. Changes in colour appearance for a 628 nm light occurred without any lens at +0.5 ± 0.2D defocus and with the doublet at +0.6 ± 0.2 D. The achromatizing lens did not affect appearance and the phenomenon was evident with the triplet for negative defocus (-0.5 ± 0.3 D). Adaptive optics correction of astigmatism and higher order monochromatic aberration did not affect magnitude significantly. Colour changes occurred despite a range of participant L/M cone ratios. Direction of change in colour appearance was reversed for short compared to long wavelengths. We conclude that longitudinal chromatic aberrations, but not monochromatic aberrations, are involved in changing appearance of small lights with defocus. Additional neuronal mechanisms that may contribute to the colour changes are considered

A reservation based parking lot system to maximize occupancy and revenue
Numerous parking issues are faced by people on a day to day basis. Congestion is caused by customers circling the lot in search of vacant parking spots while the lot may be full. At peak periods the parking lot may not be filled to maximum capacity because there are only primitive ways to indicate to customers the availability of spots in the lot. Thus parking garages tend to lose profit as usage of parking lots is not maximized. The Parking Lot System proposed aims to reduce these parking hassles faced by people and the occupancy issues faced by parking lot owners by providing customers with a facility of reserving parking spots before arrival at the lot. This reduces the parking search traffic as well as the parking search time. Additionally, this system proposes to automate occupancy tracking in the lot which ensures that customers are aware of the availability of parking spaces from remote locations. In case of unavailability of parking spaces, customers are notified at the entrance thereby reducing congestion levels in the lot. The designed system is simulated in real world scenarios to test the occupancy levels achieved by the lot. The practices and strategies used in well developed reservation systems (hotels and aviation industries) like overbooking are modified and applied in this domain to improve occupancy levels. An increase of about 5.19% in the occupancy level is observed. A comparative study of the effect of various business strategies is carried out to determine the best mix of user controllable parameters. The parameters controllable by the parking lot owners are the length of the grace period provided to customers to arrive and claim their reservation, the number of overbooked reservations made by the system and the proportion of spots in the lot available for reservation. A further increase of up to 5.97% in the occupancy level is observed by using different combinations and values of these parameters. For the purpose of simulation, the parking garage is assumed to be located in a city downtown area having customers using it for both corporate as well as leisure purpose.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Sonia Preeti Pint

Association of sleep duration and sleep quality with body mass index among young adults
Background: It is evident from the research in recent years that short sleep has been found as a risk factor for obesity. However, we still need enough evidence in this field. Therefore, we explored the directionality of the association between sleep duration and sleep quality with body mass index (BMI). Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of sleep duration and sleep quality with BMI among young adults. Objectives: (a) To assess the association of sleep duration with BMI. (b) To assess the quality of sleep with BMI. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 88 individuals selected from King George's Medical University were taken as participants. Majority of patients were males (67%). There were 29 (33.0%) females. Sex ratio of study was 2.03, and we used Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaire to assess time spent in bed and sleep quality. BMI was divided into 3 categories. Underweight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5–22.9 kg/m2), overweight (23–24.9 kg/m2), obese grade I (25–34.9 kg/m2), obese grade II (35.0 kg/m2), and above. Results: We observed that short sleep duration ± SD (h) <6 h/day f = 9.04; P < 0.001 is associated with greater chances of being overweight and obese and mean sleep quality (mean PSQI ± SD) f = 12.24; P < 0.001 was poor in obese grade I and II. Mean neck and waist circumference also showed a significant increasing trend with increasing BMI category (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study concludes that short sleep duration and poor sleep quality were associated with overweight obesity among young adults
Disaster management in flash floods in Leh (Ladakh): A case study
Background: On August 6, 2010, in the dark of the midnight, there were flash floods due to cloud burst in Leh in Ladakh region of North India. It rained 14 inches in 2 hours, causing loss of human life and destruction. The civil hospital of Leh was badly damaged and rendered dysfunctional. Search and rescue operations were launched by the Indian Army immediately after the disaster. The injured and the dead were shifted to Army Hospital, Leh, and mass casualty management was started by the army doctors while relief work was mounted by the army and civil administration. Objective: The present study was done to document disaster management strategies and approaches and to assesses the impact of flash floods on human lives, health hazards, and future implications of a natural disaster. Materials and Methods: The approach used was both quantitative as well as qualitative. It included data collection from the primary sources of the district collectorate, interviews with the district civil administration, health officials, and army officials who organized rescue operations, restoration of communication and transport, mass casualty management, and informal discussions with local residents. Results: 234 persons died and over 800 were reported missing. Almost half of the people who died were local residents (49.6%) and foreigners (10.2%). Age-wise analysis of the deaths shows that the majority of deaths were reported in the age group of 25-50 years, accounting for 44.4% of deaths, followed by the 11-25-year age group with 22.2% deaths. The gender analysis showed that 61.5% were males and 38.5% were females. A further analysis showed that more females died in the age groups <10 years and ≥50 years. Conclusions: Disaster preparedness is critical, particularly in natural disasters. The Army′s immediate search, rescue, and relief operations and mass casualty management effectively and efficiently mitigated the impact of flash floods, and restored normal life
