Introduction: Multiple Dimensions of Marginalities
Marginalities can broadly be defined as entities that represent relative peripheries, which fall into opposition with centrality or the ‘mainstream’ within a common discourse of knowledge and power. In much of India, contemporary marginalities are a product of the evolving liberal discourse since colonial times when extant liberal premises lent themselves to the Orientalist framing of religion, caste, gender, civilizational progress and geographical location as marginalities by deploying anthropology and universalistic history as intellectual anchors. Some continue to exist in the post-colonial period (despite promises of liberty and equality), while new marginalities have emerged from the interface of a developmental state with the new liberal constitutional order. Examples of new forms of marginalities include constructs around politico-social categories, majoritarianisms in their various expressions, lifestyle choices (food, dress, sexuality), regions, relationship to resources and societal location with respect to the institutional architecture of the state and law. The intellectual anchors for such formulations are provided by economics, history and political science in various guises of modernization, economic development, nationhood and politics
Channel Groups - A Unifying Abstraction for Specifying Inter-stream Relationships
ion for Specifying Inter-stream Relationships Amit Gupta and Mark Moran {amit,moran}@cs.Berkeley.EDU Tenet Group Computer Science Division University of California at Berkeley & International Computer Science Institute Berkeley, CA Abstract A single distributed application typically requires setting up a number of real-time connections, or channels. Current schemes usually assume that different channels are independent, when in reality, important relationships often exist between them. We introduce a new abstraction called channel groups that allows network clients to describe these relationships explicitly to the network service provider. For example, by describing sharing relationships between channels, the network client enables the network to share resource allocations among related channels---lowering the cost and improving the scalability of communication. In addition, specification of other relationships, such as inter-stream synchronization, disjoint-path routing, relative ..

The Indian Diaspora and Reading Desai, Mukherjee, Gupta, and Lahiri
In his article The Indian Diaspora and Reading Desai, Mukherjee, Gupta, and Lahiri Amit Shankar Saha argues that displacement produces a point of encounter between the alien and authority. Saha analyses aspects of (im)migration in texts about the Indian diaspora: if the host society is intolerant then it is through reactionary self-fashioning that the (im)migrant asserts his/her ethnicity as a defensive mechanism to rescue self-respect. However, while the host society is welcoming, it does not guarantee ready assimilation because there is always the question of severing the (im)migrants ties with his/her home land. (Im)migrants start living in two worlds simultaneously by making adjustments. They become transnationals who attempt to define their identities in terms of their point of origin and their destination followed by a second phase where ethnicity is reasserted, although this time not as a reaction against a hostile society but as displeasure against themselves. Ultimately, in the third phase, there is an understanding of how cultures enrich and an acceptance of hybrid existence becomes possible
