Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply
This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.
Using Google Analytics for improving library website content and design: a case study
Google Analytics is a free web analytics solution that provides webmasters with insightful information about how visitors find and interact with their websites. In this case study, we have experimented in using Google Analytics to analyze two of our websites: The Rutgers-Newark Law Library main website and The New Jersey Digital Legal Library website. It was used to monitor our visitors' browsing activities and viewing behaviors for three months. Based on our findings from Google Analytics reports, we have redesigned our website. Subsequent data collected by Google Analytics have confirmed that our new design better fits the information needs of our visitors and librarians. Google Analytics is very powerful and can be used for almost any website. We believe that other libraries will benefit from using Google Analytics as well. First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Biology Open, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Mei-Fang Lin is first author on ‘Transcriptomic analyses highlight the likely metabolic consequences of colonization of a cnidarian host by native or non-native Symbiodinium species’, published in BiO. Mei-Fang conducted the research described in this article while a PhD student in David John Miller's lab at James Cook University, Australia. She is now a postdoc in the lab of Hiroshi Watanabe at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Japan, investigating cnidarian genomics and evolution

As external pressure is applied to a pack of disordered particles, the system will be condensed into an amorphous jammed state possessing excess low-frequency vibrations and liquid-like mechanical responses, where the shear modulus (G) vanishes and the bulk modulus (K) holds a finite value. The criterion to judge whether such an ensemble of particles can be regarded as a continuous medium is still ambiguous due to the complexity of the system brought up by the non-affinity describing to what extent the internal particles tend to slide away from each other. In this article, by building the 2D packing derived networks, a ’liquid-solid’ transition governed by networks’ graph topology is investigated. This transition sheds a light on designing mechanical metamaterials, which permits one to separately tune its moduli or fix the Poisson ratio as well as enhance its stiffness. Our work reveals a more comprehensive understanding of how topological factors take effects on mechanical responses of randomly packing derived networks and provide more freedom in experimentally constructing tunable mechanical metamaterials.On the other hand, deformed Kagome lattices which perform fancy topological properties, are characterized by its polarization. This polarization can be calculated from its unit cell’s geometry. Domain wall between two kinds of polarization lattices can be either self-stress state or soft mode. Self-stress states, in which net force is zero with nonzero structural elements forces play an important role in load-bearing ability of ideal central-force networks’ structures and network consisting of real materials with bending forces. Soft mode demonstrated as a deformation of the structure with zero elements forces is a zero-frequency vibrational mode with zero vibrational energy. From Dong-fang Shuo to Sun Wu-kong
This is a famous episode in the Xi-you-ji 西遊記 that Sun Wu-kong steals peaches from the Queen of the West 西王母, and as you know, originally the thief was Dong-fang Shuo who served under the Emperor Wu 武帝 of the Han 漢 dynasty in history. Taoists said that Dong-fang Shuo is exiled to the earth by the Queen of the West, and that he introduces the Emperor Wu, who wants to be immortal, to a lot of things about the west. The character of Dong-fang Shuo arranged by Taoists reminds us of Hou Xing-zhe 猴行者, the antecedent of Sun Wu-kong, in the Da-Tang San-zang qu-jing shi-hua 大唐三藏取經詩話. Hou Xing-zhe steals peaches from the Queen of the West and is banished from heaven, subsequently he guides Tripitaka Xuan-zang 玄奘三藏 to the west for the purpose of obtaining Buddhist scriptures. The author points out that Buddhists adapted the Taoist character of Dong-fang Shuo as a guide to Hou xing-zhe when they described the pilgrimage and ascentation of Tripikata Xuan-zang. Before giving this view, the author discusses Ju-ling 巨靈, who fights with Sun Wu-kong as a general in the Xi-you-ji. Ju-ling was depicted by Taoists as a dwarf who is a messenger of the Queen of the West and is exposed by Dong-fang Shuo. Going back to the Han dynasty, Ju-ling had two types of the original form, one was the God of canal works, and the other was a turtle which bears a holy mountain on its back. Moreover Ju-ling is now male, now female. The author pays attention to these multiple images of Ju-ling, and explore the origin of the so-called trapped monkey. Then in view of the "goddess and traveler" motif he analyzes the relationship between Dong-fang Shuo and the Queen of the West, as well as Sun Wu-kong and the Goddess of Mercy 觀音菩薩. This analysis shows us the evolution of Sun Wu-kong and the Goddess of Mercy from Dong-fang Shuo and the Queen of the West, which took place against the background of the race for power between Buddhists and Taoisits
[[alternative]]A Study of Organizational Learning Strategies of the High-Tech Industry:The Case of the High-Tech Corporation
[[abstract]]The purpose of this study was to explore the important issues of the
organizational learning strategies of the high-tech industry. The study
adopted the single case study method of the qualitative research. The data was
collected by in-depth interviews. In the process of the research, the author
interviewed seven co-researchers in the corporation for six times. In the
first time, the author interviewed two co-researchers, and one co-researcher
each time for the next five times. After the interviews, the author coded the
tapes into word processor files and did data analysis. Having done the study,
conclusions and suggestions were made as follows:
Conclusions:
There were eight organizational learning strategies in this high-tech
corporation. The eight strategies were as follows:1. To learn competitors’
advantages;2. To integrate network’s professional specialties;3. To imitate
and satisfy customers’ needs;4. To get with laws and the environment;5. To
provide multiple learning ways;6.To exchange experiences between departments
;7. To share knowledge and skills in the department;8.To deliver knowledge
from top to down.
Suggestions:
1.To explore organizational learning strategies of other industries;
2.To discuss other aspects of organizational learning;
3.To compare the differences of organizational learning strategies among high-
tech corporations.
The Malaysian Chinese homeland consciousness and Fang Beifang's novels
This article will discuss the transformation of homeland consciousness in Fang Beifang's novels against the background of the gradual localization of Malaysian Chinese literature. Begining with an immigrant identity in the early days, the Chinese gradually realized the importance of localization, and a patriotic consciousness emerged after Malaysia attained its independence. A prominent Malaysian Chinese author Fang Beifang based his works mainly on historical events, enriched with his personal experience and the flavor of the period. Fang Beifang's major works include The Trilogy of Wind and Cloud and The Trilogy of Torrent. The former is set during the anti-Japanese war in China, whereas the latter sums up his real life experiences in Malaya/Malaysia. His works record the Chinese's contribution to the development of Malaysia, as well as the national identity and political dilemmas faced by the Malaysian Chinese community
