Youlong Xifeng (游龙戏凤)is a folk legend propagated since Ming Dynasty, which telling about the affairs between Emperor Ming Wuzong and wine-shop lady Li Feng when the emperor toured off the palace. The story is not written down in the history. This has provided the chance of imagination on this story, center around the same motif and create different literature works. Since there is no historical record, people fabricated the plot and the detail of this story, showing their judgement towards this emperor. This thesis will be using literature works related to Youlong Xifeng, generalize the literature significant by examine the plot variations and the portrayal of the characters in order to probe the inheritance and variability of this folk legend. These texts follow the same motif but make enrichment or cancelation on the earliest story and transmitted from the form of drama, novel to film and television work. These inheritance and creativity have enriched the content of this folk legend. At the same time, the variations of the plot have showed the influences of social and culture factors on texts. Some of the works caused reviews from academic, and bring the opportunity to provide the in-depth analysis of the commercial, culture and aesthetic value of the texts.Bachelor of Art

Design and Optimization of Conforming Lattice Structures

    No full text
Inspired by natural cellular materials such as trabecular bone, lattice structures have been developed as a new type of lightweight material. In this paper we present a novel method to design lattice structures that conform with both the principal stress directions and the boundary of the optimized shape. Our method consists of two major steps: the first optimizes concurrently the shape (including its topology) and the distribution of orthotropic lattice materials inside the shape to maximize stiffness under application-specific external loads; the second takes the optimized configuration (i.e., locally-defined orientation, porosity, and anisotropy) of lattice materials from the previous step, and extracts a globally consistent lattice structure by field-aligned parameterization. Our approach is robust and works for both 2D planar and 3D volumetric domains. Numerical results and physical verifications demonstrate remarkable structural properties of conforming lattice structures generated by our method. Origin of the Miocene-Pliocene Red-Earth formation at Xifeng in northern China and implications for paleoenvironments

    No full text
In the eastern Loess Plateau region of northern China, the Quaternary loess-soil sequences of the last 2.6 Ma are underlain by the Hipparion Red-Earth Formation. Magneto-stratigraphic studies suggest that it is a near continuous terrestrial record for the period from similar to7 to similar to2.6 Ma BP, and therefore, has great potential for the study of Asian paleoclimates. The origin of this formation is controversial and needs further study. In this work, the Xifeng Red-Earth section, a type section for the eastern Loess Plateau region, was studied using optical microscopic analysis, grain-size measurements, and both major- and trace-element geochemical properties to address questions of its origin and environmental implications. The results show that this formation consists of three parts. The Lower part (>6.2 Ma BP) is a water-reworked deposit related to alluvial and slope processes; the Middle part (from similar to6.2 to similar to3.6 Ma BP) was derived from in situ eolian dust deposition, but was significantly affected by groundwater oscillations; and the Upper part (from similar to3.6 to similar to2.6 Ma BP) is an eolian formation, similar to the Quaternary loess-soil sequence. The grain-size of the Upper part is significantly coarser than for the middle part, but finer than for the overlying loess. Because the eolian dust deposits in the middle reaches of the Yellow River were mainly transported from the deserts in northern China by the northwesterly winter monsoon wind and the westerlies, we interpret the eolian origin of the Middle and Upper Red-Earth formation, beginning approximately at 6.2 Ma BP, as an indication of the strengthening of the aridification of the Asian continent. Desert lands in Central Asia must have been formed at or by that time to provide a significant source of dust. However, the generally finer grain-size of the Red-Earth suggests a weaker transporting wind, and/or a more remote source. The latter implies a smaller extent of deserts than in the Quaternary. The high degree of similarity between the geochemical properties of the Red-Earth and loess samples seems to suggest a rather similar source areas and comparable dust-transporting trajectories. The removal of the dust deposits from groundwater influence and the increase in grain-size at similar to3.6 Ma BP are attributable to both tectonic and climatic causes. The initiation of these phenomena corresponds to an intensive uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and also to a simultaneous uplift of the sedimentary basins in the surrounding areas. It is also approximately synchronous with an increase in eolian mass accumulation rate in the North Pacific, both suggesting an increased continental aridity in the Asian dry lands, and an increasing intensity of transporting winds. Traditional drama adaptions of A Dream of Red Mansions emerged one after another since the publication of the original 120-chapter novel in 1791. Curiously however, the character of Wang Xifeng, despite her importance in the novel, had not been taken up as a central figure for over one hundred years. Focusing on two representative plays that eventually appeared in the 20th century, which both consider Wang Xifeng as a main role, this paper examines how the character of Wang was adapted by comparing the plays with the original novel and by analyzing how the line We are all the same has been adopted as an approach to appeal the miserable condition women faced in a highly patriarchal society at the core of the conflicts between wife and concubines. Besides the differences in the methods of expression in literature and drama, the playwright's intentions and the historical background at the time of the play's creation are taken into account as important factors that affect the presentation of a character. The appearance of Wang Xifeng on the stage opened a new era in the history of A Dream of Red Mansions' dramatical adaptions by revealing a different angle of explication, which ultimately contributed to bring a wave of positive influence on the spread and reception of the novel

Experimental study on heat radiation distribution of adjacent tank wall under fire conditions

The main factor of oil tank fire spread should be attributed to the fire's heat radiation. Affected by the heat radiation transferred from the flame of the firing tank, adjacent tanks are easily ignited and may cause a widespread fire in the entire tank farm. In order to study the distribution rule of heat radiation on tank wall when adjacent tanks are exposed to heat radiation, the small-sized experimental device of the heat radiation influence of burning tank on adjacent tank a smallscale experimental device for the influence of tank combustion on the heat radiation of adjacent tanks was established to conduct the experimental study on heat radiation distribution of adjacent tank wall under fire conditions. The experimental results show that under fire conditions, the adjacent tank wall in front of the firing tank is most exposed to radiation. The heat radiation drops gradually from the tank roof to the tank bottom and symmetrically from the center line to both sides. As the L/D(L is the distance between two adjacent oil tanks, and D is the diameter of the oil tank) ratio increases, the heat radiation on the adjacent tank decreases. The experimental data can provide a reference for the heat radiation research of adjacent tanks under fire conditions, and is of great significance for preventing adjacent tanks from being ignited and preventing fire and explosion accidents in tank farm

Boosted Electrocatalytic N-2 Reduction to NH3 by Defect-Rich MoS2 Nanoflower

    No full text
The industrial artificial fixation of atmospheric N-2 to NH3 is carried out using the Haber-Bosch process that is not only energy-intensive but emits large amounts of greenhouse gas. Electrochemical reduction offers an environmentally benign and sustainable alternative for NH3 synthesis. Although Mo-dependent nitrogenases and molecular complexes effectively catalyze the N-2 fixation at ambient conditions, the development of a Mo-based nanocatalyst for highly performance electrochemical N-2 fixation still remains a key challenge. Here, greatly boosted electrocatalytic N-2 reduction to NH3 with excellent selectivity by defect-rich MoS2 nanoflowers is reported. In 0.1 m Na2SO4, this catalyst attains a high Faradic efficiency of 8.34% and a high NH3 yield of 29.28 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) at (-)0.40 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, much larger than those of defect-free counterpart (2.18% and 13.41 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1)), with strong electrochemical stability. Density functional theory calculations show that the potential determining step has a lower energy barrier (0.60 eV) for defect-rich catalyst than that of defect-free one (0.68 eV)

Implementation of the DAQ software for the ALTI module in the ATLAS TileCal and the search for new physics in the four lepton final state

A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Institute for Collider Particle Physics), to the Faculty of Science, School of Physics, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2023.The discovery of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson in 2012 presents new challenges and opportunities for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. After a long period of operation, the LHC experiments needed to maintain and upgrade their detectors in order to continue and conduct research beyond the SM. As part of the upgrades, the Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) participated in Phase-I of the upgrades (December 2018 - March 2022). TileCal, the central hadronic calorimeter (|η| < 1.7) of the ATLAS experiment uses a set of Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) software to readout, transport and store physics data resulting from collisions at the LHC. In preparation for the Phase-I upgrades, the ATLAS Local Trigger Interface (ALTI) module was designed for the ATLAS experiment at CERN for TDAQ purposes. It is a 6U VME electronics board, which is a part of the Timing, Trigger and Control (TTC) system. It integrates the functionalities of four legacy modules, currently used in the experiment: Local Trigger Processor, Local Trigger Processor interface, TTC VME bus interface and the TTC emitter. The ALTI module provides the interface between the Level-1 Central Trigger Processor and the TTC optical broadcasting network to the front-end electronics of each of the ATLAS sub-detectors. This thesis discusses the development, validation and integration of the TileCal specific ALTI software in the TileCal online software by the author. A set of ALTI boards were installed in the back-end electronics of the sub-detector and fully validated for the ATLAS detector at CERN. Performance testing and maintenance of the ALTI modules and software were performed during the second half of the upgrade period, in preparation for Run 3 (2022–2025) data-taking period. The thesis also discusses the search for the presence of a new heavy resonance produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decaying to the four-lepton (4ℓ) final state, in association with missing transverse energy (EmissT), with ℓ = e, µ (where ℓ is the lepton, e is the electron and µ is the muon). The search uses 2015–2018 proton-proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1, collected by the ATLAS detector. The data are interpreted in terms of two models, firstly the R → SH → 4ℓ + EmissT , where R is a scalar boson, which decays to two lighter scalar bosons (S and H). The S decays to a pair of neutrinos and the H decays into 4ℓ, through ZZ bosons. The second model is the A → Z(νν)H(ZZ) → 4ℓ + X, where A is considered to be a CP-odd scalar which decays to a CP-even scalar H and the Z boson. The Z boson decays to X, which can be a pair of neutrinos or jets, and the H decays to the 4ℓ final state.National Research Foundation (NRF).Department of Science and Innovation through the SA-CERN consortium.SAINTS, iThemba LABS NRF, through the PhD SA-CERN Excellence Scholarship.MMM202
