    Fan Translations

    No full text
Fan Translations introduces students and scholars in media studies, modern languages and related disciplines to the concept and practices of fan translation. Beginning with an overview of the research on fan translation from both media and translation studies, this book focuses on issues such as the tension between creative readings and commercial exploitation, the role of translation in popular culture, the changing media landscape and the balance between translation as a form of self-expression and as a service to the community. Fan Translations resists the assumption of a Global North subject in existing scholarship, and instead explores the connections between fandom and translation in the Global South where access to primary texts and official merchandise is often mediated through both official and fan translations as well as through unofficial products. Through the utilization of case studies, Evans and Guo explore different perspectives on fandom, translation and their intersections. These case studies touch on imperative topics in fan culture, such as fan translation in queer communities and media as a method of community building and the interrelation between fan and professional translation, leading to ongoing changes in media distribution

Using performance assessment in secondary school mathematics: an empirical study in a Singapore classroom

    No full text
This article reports an exploratory study on using performance assessment in mathematics instruction in a high-performing secondary school in Singapore. An intact mathematics class participated in the study, and received chapter-based performance tasks as intervention during regular mathematics lessons for about one and a half school years. The performance tasks used included authentic and/or open-ended tasks. The students’ academic achievements and attitudes in mathematics were compared with a comparison class that did not receive the intervention. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected, mainly through questionnaire surveys, performance task tests, conventional school exams, and interviews with students and teachers. The results suggest that the students receiving the intervention performed significantly better than their counterparts in solving conventional exam problems, and in general they also showed more positive changes in attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics learning. The students from the experimental class also expressed positive views about the benefits of using performance tasks in promoting their ability in higher order thinking, though no statistically significant difference was detected between the two classes of students in solving unconventional tasks before and after intervention. Overall, the results appear to support teachers’ using contextualised problems in real life situations and open-ended investigations in students’ learning of mathematic

Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club

MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him. This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

Unsteady simulation for optimal arrangement of dedusting airduct in coal mine heading face

To optimize dedusting efficiency in coal mines, a model of dust movement in heading roadway with far-pressing-near-absorption ventilation system was built. The empirical drag force model was applied into the unsteady inter phase coupling modeling of air and dust flow. The Discrete Phase Modeling in Fluent was employed to solve the problem and unstructured grids were utilized to mesh the complex 3-D roadway with different airduct allocations. Results show that the dedusting efficiency with the dedusting fan in the air return side is obviously better than that with the fan in the middle of the heading machine. The dedusting efficiency decreases within creasing distance between air inlet and heading section. When this distance is 2.0mwith airduct in the air return side, it has the best dedusting efficiency; in which the dust concentration in the front of roadway after 60 seconds of digging and cutting decreases from 1150mg/m3 to 365mg/m3; the average dust concentration in roadway decreases from 597mg/m3 to 144mg/m3; and the total dedusting efficiency reaches up to 75.88%.Peer reviewe

Effects of land use intensity on dissolved organic carbon properties and microbial community structure

    No full text
In the last three decades there has been a major shift in China's agriculture with the conversion from cereal fields to vegetable production, however little is known about the impact of this land use change on labile soil carbon and microbial community structure. We conducted a study to characterize dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and soil microbial community by comparing greenhouse vegetable fields with contrasting management intensity and adjacent cereal fields (wheat-maize rotation) in Shouguang and Quzhou in North China. Compared with cereal fields, greenhouse vegetable cultivation increased soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN), while it decreased the soil pH, particularly at the high-intensity site. The DOC concentration was significantly higher in greenhouse vegetable fields than in cereal fields, whereas DOC composition differed between greenhouse vegetable fields and cereal fields only at high management intensity. Chemical fractionation indicated that DOC from greenhouse vegetable fields with high management intensity was less decomposed than DOC from cereal fields, because the percentage of hydrophobic acid (HOA) as DOC was higher in vegetable fields. Vegetable production significantly changed the microbial community structure in comparison to cereal fields: high-intensity management increased total bacteria, G (+) bacteria and fungi, while low-intensity decreased fungi and increased bacteria-to-fungi ratio. The main factor affecting microbial community structure was soil pH in this study, accounting for 24% of the differences. © 2012 Elsevier Masson SAS.Jing Tian, Mingsheng Fan, Jingheng Guo, Petra Marschner, Xiaolin Li, Yakov Kuzyako

Supporting data for "3D Printed Functional and Biological Materials on Moving Freeform Surfaces"

Full description in the file "ZhuReadme.txt".The data set includes the experimental data supporting the results reported in Zhu, Zhijie, Shuang‐Zhuang Guo, Tessa Hirdler, Cindy Eide, Xiaoxiao Fan, Jakub Tolar, and Michael C. McAlpine. "3D printed functional and biological materials on moving freeform surfaces." Advanced Materials, 30(23), 1707495. Conventional 3D printing technologies typically rely on open‐loop, calibrate‐then‐print operation procedures. An alternative approach is adaptive 3D printing, which is a closed‐loop method that combines real‐time feedback control and direct ink writing of functional materials in order to fabricate devices on moving freeform surfaces. Here, it is demonstrated that the changes of states in the 3D printing workspace in terms of the geometries and motions of target surfaces can be perceived by an integrated robotic system aided by computer vision. A hybrid fabrication procedure combining 3D printing of electrical connects with automatic pick‐and‐placing of surface‐mounted electronic components yields functional electronic devices on a free‐moving human hand. Using this same approach, cell‐laden hydrogels are also printed on live mice, creating a model for future studies of wound‐healing diseases. This adaptive 3D printing method may lead to new forms of smart manufacturing technologies for directly printed wearable devices on the body and for advanced medical treatments.National Institutes of Health, Grant 1DP2EB020537Regenerative Medicine Minnesota, Grant RMM102516006National Institutes of Health, Grant R01AR063070The graduate school of the University of Minnesota, 2017-18 Interdisciplinary Doctoral FellowshipZhu, Zhijie; Guo, Shuang-Zhuang; Hirdler, Tessa; Eide, Cindy; Fan, Xiaoxiao; Tolar, Jakub; McAlpine, Michael C.
