Bradenton Beach
This aerial depicts Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island looking north from the Cortez Bridge toward the City of Holmes Beach. Archaeological evidence suggests that Native Americans utilized Anna Maria Island for hunting, fishing, and short-term residence for upwards of 2,000 years before Anna Maria Island saw its first settlers in the 1890s. Bradenton Beach, which became a well-known location for sunbathing visitors and fisherman, grew in popularity in the early 1920s after the construction of a bridge connecting that part of the island to the mainland. The area was known as Cortez Beach, linking it to the closest community, the fishing Village of Cortez. However, by the 1930s, the Bradenton Herald and other organizations began referring to the location as Bradenton Beach to help distinguish it from the shores of Cortez. In 1941, the Bradenton Beach Post Office was established, and The City of Bradenton Beach was incorporated in 1952. Today Bradenton Beach is a popular and bustling vacation destination, with both permanent residents and many seasonal and temporary guests
