Gender, Time Use, and Labor Income in Guinea: Micro and Macro Analyses
No full textHigher incomes for women can have significant beneficial impacts for poverty reduction both in the short run by providing more resources to households and in the long run by increasing investments in the human capital of children. Substantial research has been done using microeconomic household survey data on gender disparities in labor incomes in developing countries in recent years. The first contribution of this paper is to summarize some of that research as applied to Guinea. However, microeconomic studies may not necessarily provide insights on how broad structural shifts in an economy could affect differently opportunities for work and income generation for men and women. In the second part of the paper, we use a recent Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Guinea to assess how growth in various sectors of the economy could affect the incomes of women and men both directly and indirectly through multiplier effects. We find that an expansion of sectors oriented primarily towards domestic consumption could have a larger positive impact on the labor income share of women than an expansion of export-oriented sectors.Gender; Labor income; Social Accounting Matrix; Guinea

Coordination of distributed systems through self-organizing group topologies
No full textDistributed pervasive systems have been employed in a wide spectrum of applications, from environmental monitoring, to emergency response. These systems have very strong coordination requirements and are hard to design. Their development becomes even more complex if we consider that they need to be able to adapt to the frequent changes that can occur in the execution environment, or in the resources available to the system. We present A-3, a model and a self-organizing distributed middleware for designing and implementing high-volume and highly volatile distributed systems. It focuses on the coordination needs of such systems, yet it also provides designers with a clear view of where they can include control loops, and how they can coordinate them for global management. We have evaluated A-3 on an example in which we want to increase the efficiency and safety of staff and patients in a health-care environment using an RFID-based distributed surveillance system. The experiments we present evaluate the scalability, performance, and robustness of our middleware, and compare it with two plausible alternatives: a completely centralized solution, and a decentralized one based on Lime, a well-known distributed tuple space framework. We ascertain that, with A-3, a system can avoid overloading its elements by distributing the communication load, and that this can be achieved autonomously, regardless of the size of the system itself

No full textA letter from Hayao (Sam) Chuman to the American Friends Service Committee, donating a portion of his redress check from the U.S. government to the Committee.The Chuman (Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko) Papers documents the World War II experiences of Hayao "Sam" and Toshiko Chuman, who were Kibei Nisei born in the United States but grew up and completed school in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. prior to the war. It chronicles the Chuman's incarceration from the Santa Anita Assembly Center, through Jerome, Rohwer, Tule Lake camps, and the Santa Fe and Crystal City internment camps as well as their struggle for restoring their U.S. citizenships in the 1960s. The digital collection consists of mostly textual material, including correspondence, affidavits, incarceration camp records, lease agreements, financial documents, receipts, pamphlets, and booklets
