Summary
The level and quality of human’s health during lifetime is affected by many factors, for example hygienic and eating habbits, value system, physical régime, education, living conditions and job demands. The growth in usage of addictive substances among adolscents raises requirement in studying this topic even in younger age. Pilot research covered 149 children from Czech Republic at the age of 9,62. Results was obtained by project International Visegrad Fund No. 11320057. The survey was aimed on usage of addictive substances and attitudes towards them. Based on the result, we states, that children from research group have experiences especially with drinking of alcohol (wine 72,48 %; plum brandy etc. 43,62 %). Alcohol is usually offered by parents or familly members (26,17 %). An experience with smoking have 33,56 % of probands and 8,5 % from them smokes repeatedly. Alarming is fact, that some probands (5 %) was offered even a drug (marihuanna). The necessary support of preventive programs focused on active spending of leisure time and active lifestyle is obviuos. The state should support the creation and realization of these programs.Miklánková Ludmila, Reich Petr, Klimešová Iva, Rechtik Zdeněk. Substances in the life of children 8–10 years old. Comparison of pubescents'achievement in leisure time activities and in school
Title: Comparison of pubescents' achievement in leisure time activities and in school Author: Mgr. Bc. Iva Žlábková Doctoral advisor: doc. PhDr. Jaroslav Koťa Year of submission of dissertation: 2012 Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague, Department of Education The dissertation has a theoretically-empirical character and deals with the solution to the problem of comparing the pubescents' achievement in leisure activities and in school. The aim of the work was to map out the theoretical solutions of the problem and their authentication via the research survey. In the theoretical part of the work, first of all, the achievement in education processes is analyzed from the point of view of sociological theories and researches. Subsequently the analysis of the causes of school pubescents' achievement and underachievement follows. On the basis of the analysis the assumptions are deduced for pubescents' achievement in organized leisure time activities. The empirical part of the work describes a quantitatively oriented research which includes a solution to the research problem: "What is the relationship between the pubescents' achievement in their leisure time activities and in school?" The questionnaire method and the semantic differential have been used to solve the research problem. The..
The 19 Unifying Questionnaire Constructs of Artificial Social Agents
In this paper, we report on the multi-year Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVA) community effort, involving more than 80 researchers worldwide, researching the IVA community interests and practises in evaluating human interaction with an artificial social agent (ASA). The effort is driven by previous IVA workshops and plenary IVA discussions related to the methodological crisis on the evaluation of ASAs. A previous literature review showed a continuous practise of creating new questionnaires instead of reusing validated questionnaires. We address this issue by examining questionnaire measurement constructs used in empirical studies between 2013 to 2018 published in the IVA conference. We identified 189 constructs used in 89 questionnaires that are reported across 81 studies. Although these constructs have different names, they often measure the same thing. In this paper, we, therefore, present a unifying set of 19 constructs that captures more than 80% of the 189 constructs initially identified. We established this set in two steps. First, 49 researchers classified the constructs in broad theoretically based categories. Next, 23 researchers grouped the constructs in each category on their similarity. The resulting 19 groups form a unifying set of constructs, which will be the basis for the future questionnaire instrument of human-ASA interaction.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Interactive Intelligenc
Self-reference in the Press Releases of the Ministry of Defence
Self-reference – the practice of organizations referring to themselves in the third
person – is a key property of the press release (Jacobs, 1999.a). It is achieved through recurrence:
an organization can be identified by its full name or by a synonym, a hypernym,
a metaphor etc. (Linke and Nussbaumer, 2000.). In this research, self-reference was examined
on a corpus of 48 press releases issued by the Ministry of Defence. That ministry
is noteworthy because the Croatian Armed Forces operate as an autonomous organisation
within it, meaning that its press releases describe activities of two organisations. This study
investigated the frequency with which these organisations were referenced in the press releases,
along with the names used to identify them. The analysis revealed that the Croatian
Armed Forces were mentioned five times more often than the Ministry of Defence. The
authors of the press releases most frequently referred to the Ministry of Defence by its full
name. In contrast, when discussing the Croatian Armed Forces, they predominantly used
the legally admissible synonym Croatian army (Croatian Parliament, 2013.) rather than the
official name. Both names were analysed and compared. It was concluded that the name
Croatian army is more aligned with the principles of terminology. It is shorter and more
widespread; in the analysed texts, it was used sixteen times more frequently than the official
name. Furthermore, it is older, having served as the official name for the Croatian military
during the Homeland War (1991 – 1995). It also continues to be used today in the names of
memorial days. On the basis of the conducted research as well terminological, historical and
legal factors, it is concluded that Croatian army is a more adequate name for the Croatian
military. It is therefore proposed that this name once again be adopted as the official name
for that organisation
Language and gesture in blind learners of English
The aim of this thesis was to examine the connection between language and gesture in blind learners of English from Croatia. In order to answer the main research questions, a study was conducted on a group of blind learners and two contrast groups of sighted learners. All groups were asked to retell a story in English and in Croatian. They were filmed and afterwards, the number of gestures each participant produced was counted. Also, the gestures were classified in order to establish which gesture types were produced most often and for what purposes. While both contrast groups produced a roughly the same amount of gestures in English and Croatian, blind learners produced more gestures in English. Of all gesture types, they were found to produce beats the most. The conclusion from this study is that blind learners gesticulate more in English so as to compensate for their lacking knowledge. Gestures help them overcome lexical gaps in their knowledge and communicate a message across to the listener. Some gestures, such as beats, assist the learners in organizing their thoughts into sentences and articulating them. Finally, gestures are also an important motivating factor in that they encourage these learners towards completing the narrative task
Media Linguistics: Emergence, Contemporary Trends and Recommendations for Development in the Republic of Croatia
No, istraživanja o jeziku medija provođena su i prije tog vremena.
Danas medijska lingvistika surađuje s drugim disciplinama u provođenju multidisciplinarnih, interdisciplinarnih i transdisciplinarnih istraživanja. This paper describes media linguistics, a linguistic discipline which studies the relationship between language and the media, i. e. which analyses how mass media professionals employ language to depict reality (Perrin 2015). The discipline was established in the late 20th and early 21st century, when it was given a name in English, German and Russian language. However, research on the language of the media had been conducted before that time. The representatives of critical linguistics (e.g. Fowler, Hodge, Tress and Krew 1979) and critical discourse analysis (e.g. van Dijk 1985, 1988) observed how language means are employed to promote political ideology in the media. Later linguists such as Bell (1991), Jucker (1992) or Fairclough (1995) shifted the focus from ideology to the analysis of lexical, syntactic and pragmatic properties of media texts. Today, media linguistics collaborates with other disciplines in conducting multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research studies. In those studies, researchers carry out language and discourse analyses of media texts, categorize texts into genres and group genres into categories on the basis of function or some other property. They also compare texts and examine their genesis as well as the audience’s reaction to them. This paper offers several suggestions for the development of media linguistics in the Republic of Croatia, starting with the adoption of the proposed Croatian name medijska lingvistika. Among other things, it proposes the development of courses about media linguistics as a part of study programmes in the fields of philology and communication science as well a closer co–operation between linguists and communication scientists in studies about the language of the media. Further, it recommends broadening the focus of research to understudied genres and applying the methods of media linguistics to studies about the genesis of media texts in the Croatian language
Apozicijska rečenica and Appositive Clause: Equivalents or False Friends?
Quirk i dr. This paper examines apozicijske rečenice in Croatian and appositive clauses in English so as to determine whether those two grammatical terms are equivalents. An overview of Croatian grammars shows that there is no agreement regarding the status of apozicijska rečenica. In those grammars which contain the term (e.g. Hudeček and Mihaljević 2017, Silić and Pranjković 2007), apozicijska rečenica is defined as a complex sentence in which a subordinate relative clause is linked to a noun from the base clause so as to supplement its meaning. The term appositive clause is used amphibolously in English grammars. Quirk et al (1997) use it to describe a subordinate clause which is attached to an abstract noun to pinpoint its meaning. Structurally, appositive clauses are nominal finite or non-finite clauses and can be restrictive or non-restrictive. Other grammarians, such as Auran and Loock (2011) or de Vries (2006), use the term appositive relative clause to denote a non-restrictive relative clause which is linked to a noun or a whole clause in order to convey additional information about it. Through comparison, it is concluded that apozicijska rečenica and appositive clause are not equivalents, since an appositive clause is not a type of sentence, but a type of clause. However, it cannot be claimed that apozicijska surečenica and appositive clause are equivalents, either: apozicijska surečenica has a wider range of antecedents than an appositive clause and is exclusively relative and non-restrictive. Appositive relative clauses are closer to apozicijske surečenice in structure and content, therefore that term would be more acceptable as an equivalent. It is suggested that entries for clause types in Croatian be included into terminological works and bases, and that the term appositive relative clause be listed as the English equivalent in the entry for apozicijska surečenica. Separate entries for clause types would allow a more precise matching of Croatian and English clause type equivalents
