Two critical issues in detailing reinforced concrete frames for ductility

    No full text
Ductility is considered an essential requirement for the seismic design of reinforced concrete structures, since it allows redistributing forces among the members of a redundant structure after reaching their strength. However, the Eurocodes and the Italian Building Code recognize the need to design structures against accidental loading as well, relying on ductility and redundancy to prevent disproportionate collapse. This paper first illustrates the need of applying ductile design to all frames subjected to any accidental load, not limited to earthquake scenarios, based on equilibrium considerations and laboratory observations. Then, it summarizes the results of an analytical study validated against experimental evidence, which demonstrate the need of increasing the length of the critical regions beyond the values currently prescribed by structural codes

Two Introductory Data-driven Activities for Secondary Schools

    No full text
This paper presents two data-driven activities aimed at secondary school students to promote data thinking skills, the first focusing on data literacy and the second on computer programming with a'data-centric' pedagogy. We briefly introduce a Python package, called ToyPandas, that we developed to make coding more accessible to novice data science enthusiasts. The paper then discusses the motivations and challenges of providing an introductory data activity for students without a computing or data science background, and presents our experience, discussing some preliminary assessment results
