Dynamics of Advice Network and Knowledge Contribution: A Longitudinal Social Network Analysis
Online communities have become an increasingly popular channel for social interaction, enabling knowledge and opinion sharing across a board range of topics and contexts. Their viability and sustainability depends largely on contributions from community members in terms of time, resources, and knowledge. However, how individuals' knowledge contribution behavior changes over time and what network structural characteristics influence individuals' contribution behavior is not well understood. This study investigates "co-evolution" of social networks (i.e. advice network) and knowledge contribution behavior thorough a lens of social selection and social influence mechanism. This study are particularly interested in examining the dynamics of the advice network ties and the knowledge contribution behavior in the context of virtual financial communities in which people voluntarily participate to exchanges investing-related information. Unlike popular friendship-based online social networks, virtual financial communities in this study enables members to construct their own advice network by adding, maintaining, or terminating advice ties. Changes in network ties are referred to as social selection, while changes in individuals' behavior in response to the current network position are referred to as social influence. Dynamic network modeling is applied to investigate effects of social selection and influence separately and then examine the interplay between social selection and behavioral influence. Examination of such effects both separately and simultaneously requires a longitudinal data that capture dynamic changes in both the advice ties and the behavior under study.Release after 09-Aug-2014Originally embargoed until 09-Aug-2014; further restricted on 22-Jan-2016 per author request / K

A 2-stage vision-based localization methodology for efficient automatic charging of electric vehicles in uncertain environments
Data availability statement:
The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.Automatic visual localization of electric vehicle (EV) charging ports presents significant challenges in uncertain environments, such as varying surface textures, reflections, lighting and observation distance. Existing methods require extensive real-world training data and well-focused images to achieve robust and accurate localization. However, both requirements are difficult to meet under variable and unpredictable conditions. This paper proposes a 2-stage vision-based localization approach. Firstly, the image synthesis technique is used to reduce the cost of real-world data collection. A task-oriented parameterization protocol (TOPP) is proposed to optimize the quality of the synthetic images. Secondly, an autofocus and servoing strategy is proposed. A hybrid detector is employed to enhance sharpness assessment performance, while a visual servoing method based on single exponential smoothing (SES) is developed to enhance stability and efficiency during the search process. Experiments were conducted to evaluate image synthesis efficiency, detection accuracy, and servoing performance. The proposed method achieved 99% detection accuracy on the real-world port images, and guided the robot to the optimal imaging position within 16 s, outperforming comparable approaches. These results highlight its potential for robust automated charging in real-world scenarios.Funding Research supported by the State Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing Equipment and Technology, Grant No. DMETKF2021018. Spectral compression of chirp-free optical pulses in fibers with exponentially increasing dispersion
We numerically demonstrate high-degree spectral compression of chirp-free optical pulses in fibers with exponentially increasing dispersion. The spectral compression factor and brightness-enhanced factor can exceed 10, and the suggested fiber is a 0.8 km dispersion exponentially increasing fiber. We find that the input pulses finally evolve into the self-similar soliton as they propagate in the fiber. The pulse chirp is generated, although the input pulse is chirp-free, and the detailed evolution of the chirp parameter is discussed. The exponentially increasing dispersion has enabled the efficient spectral compression, and some key parameters such as the initial pulse width, initial dispersion value, and dispersion exponentially increasing rate also affect the spectral compression process for the hyperbolic secant and Gaussian input pulses. Wavelength tunability and effect of third-order dispersion also are discussed. We further provide a comparison between the numerical results from the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation and pulse parameter equations. Identifiability and estimation of probabilities from multiple databases with incomplete data and sampling selection
For an application problem, there may be multiple databases, and each database may not contain complete variables or attributes, that is, some variables are observed but some others are missing. Further, data of a database may be collected conditionally on some designed variables. In this paper, we discuss problems related to data mining from such multiple databases. We propose an approach for detecting identifiability of a joint distribution from multiple databases. For an identifiable joint distribution, we further present the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for calculating the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the joint distribution.Computer Science, Artificial IntelligenceComputer Science, Theory & MethodsSCI(E)CPCI-S(ISTP)
