Italian backgrounds. 1835-1837. Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc early travels in Italy
[EN] Comparing John Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc to highlight their opposing approaches to protecting the past is frequent when reading about them and is indeed valid and effective. Here we take this approach, moving along with their travels in Italy which also have never been compared. Interpreting preservation as conservation and maintenance on one hand, or restoration and repair on the other are the opposing strategies upheld by these two authoritative figures in European cultural attitudes to restoration in the mid-19th century. Focusing on the 1830s, and their first visits to Italy implies grasping how their experience of architecture, landscape, and Italian society influenced their later reflections on conservation. The aim is to highlight the impact on contemporary and future generations of a concept of the monument as a lasting object, that can be repaired and perfected, rather than a live one, because it is marked by time, and conditioned by the nature of the places and local traditions.[ES] La puesta en paralelo de dos maneras opuestas de entender la protección del legado arquitectónico, la de John Ruskin y la de Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, comportan una clave de lectura reiterada, objetivamente válida y eficaz. Grisoni, MM. Tripoli town plan (1930-1936). The consciousness of the past
[EN] The paper recalls the well known urban facts of Tripoli during the Italian colonialism to eventually
deepen the theme of the preservation of the past and not only of the Roman one, as well of the city
walls. The town plan has been analyzed not only as it has been approved but also as it has been argued,
not only through the drawings but also by the debate. A few letters between the professionals involved
(especially Alberto Alpago Novello) and some authoritative exponents of the contemporary architecture
culture and criticism (like, Gustavo Giovannoni) have assured an original source to underlines the critical background and to reveal a purpose of touristic and commercial development.Grisoni, M. Where is our cathedral? An experience of heritage education
In 990, on his way back to Canterbury, archbishop Sigeric the Serious (950ca-994) wrote in a diary his eighty stopping-places on his way home. Moving from Placentia (Piacenza) to Pamphica (Pavia) passing the Po River, it is believed he passed in the nearby of Calendasco.
Since 2016 this small village is a selected case study for a class in ‘Historical Building Preservation’ at the Polytechnic of Milan, Piacenza Campus, bachelor in Architecture. Now we are trying to match university students with inhabitants, and young citizen too, to strengthen a bottom-up strategy in heritage preservation. In 2021 a convention between the University and the Municipality has been signed not only to promote on-site studies and original historical research but any strategies to link tangible and intangible Christian culture and its legacy.
The idea is to recall to the contemporary ‘citizen’ the place the pilgrims visited, churches and cathedrals like those of Piacenza and Vercelli and their multi-faced heritage. The paper will present ongoing experiences

Gestire la complessità che è nei dettagli. Studi per il riuso della ‘scuderia’ del castello di Calendasco / Managing a complexity of details. Studies to re-use the stable of the Calendasco’s castle.
In 2003 the so called “Scuderia” (stable) in Calendasco, once upon related to the close-by castle and eventually a farmhouse, has become a public property. Unused but not disregarded, it is proposed to arrange cultural activities (like a local public library and archives collection) and to host pilgrims walking on the via Francigena which notoriously crosses the site. Such a re-use, which is now also pushed by a financing plan (PNRR), is involving a large group of professionals: the design’s mission requires a shared discussion to balance different perspectives on a building which is anyhow listed for its historical importance. Being this history almost unknown, a study has been started since 2021. Bibliographic and archival sources like stratigraphical analysis have been considered. They are revealing a set of different and subsequent building events. The paper presents these results to open a discussion and hopefully to plan a real conservation program for all the history of this battered building. Not only this architecture should be called a stable (scuderia), but a complex expression of a continuous and much more extended time course
A Tripartite Post-Recession Rebalancing
In this latest Advance & Rutgers Report, entitled “A Tripartite Post-Recession Rebalancing,” Dean James W. Hughes and Professor Joseph J. Seneca deliver an incisive assessment of the current market conditions and obstacles in the path of our economic recovery. They offer a statistical cautionary tale that the private and public sector need to hear and acknowledge in order for the economy to make continued progress. This report was published as Issue Paper Number 7, November 2011, in Advance & Rutgers Report
