Specification Errors in Spatial Models: Impacts on Modeling and Estimation.
A principal motivation for the research reported in this paper is to seek to understand what consequences can result from an erroneous specification of the lattice topology when an autoregressive spatial model is employed for inferential purposes. The first part of the discussion concerns impacts of such a specification error on the resulting dependence structure among data in SAR and CAR models. Although some ideas on this matter can be found in popular monographs about spatial statistics (Cliff and Ord 1981; Griffith 1988; Cressie 1993; Guyon 1995), the problem does not seem to have been attacked directly in the literature, two exceptions being Griffith (1995) and Griffith and Lagona (1997). In this paper an additional step is made in this direction, extensively using the theory of power series for matrices (see, for instance, Cooke 1950) and basic graph theory (see, for instance, Ore 1960). The second part of the discussion concerns impacts of a misspecified lattice topology on the quality of popular estimation procedures for SAR and CAR models. Because estimator quality can be measured by sampling distribution properties, unbiasedness and efficiency are considered here as basic measures of it. For this problem, a useful starting point is furnished by Oksanen (1991), and Cordey and Griffith's (1993) work is extended here. Much of the finite sample mathematical statistics summarized in this paper is numerically demonstrated in Griffith (1995). And, the Jacobian work outlined in Griffith and Sone (1995) is exploited to attain selected analytical results
The link between product market reform and macro-economic performance
Value-added per capita in EU countries has lagged behind the US. This is despite widespread reforms to product markets across EU countries aimed at increasing growth. This study analyses the macro-economic impact of product market reforms undertaken in the European Union over the 1980s and 1990s by examining a large number of regulations and reforms across EU countries.product market, product market reforms, regulations, macro-economic performance, allocative efficiency, productive efficiency, dynamic efficiency, aggregate economy, Griffith, Harisson
Reflections on the Choral Rehearsal Cycle: An Approach to Professional Practice
This dissertation explores and reflects on the professional practice of the author and a group of five experts through case studies. Incorporating interviews, observations, reflective journals, video footage, and a choral project, this research aims to explore how five expert choral conductors work in the rehearsal setting. Rehearsal techniques are as diverse as the individuals who practise them. Yet, even though conductors have their differences, the varied outcomes can still be judged as satisfactory. These techniques are not necessarily skills that have been taught in an undergraduate conducting class. Conducting courses and textbooks focus on beat patterns and other skills that must be mastered by the novice and which, in turn, lend themselves more readily to assessment. However, the running of a rehearsal is a complex mixture of musicianship and teaching skills that are continually developed over a lifetime of practice. The following questions emerge: how, then, do highly successful conductors work in rehearsal? What do they consider to be important parts of their own practice? What skills and attributes are crucial for successful ensemble leadership? For this research, five expert choral conductors were observed on site in multiple rehearsals and in working with a variety of vocal ensembles. They also participated in a wide-ranging, semistructured interview that further explored their approaches to conducting, repertoire selection, planning, personal philosophy, and reflections on their craft. The author used the data generated from the case studies and through a survey of core literature to experiment with their own practice during a 12-week rehearsal period that culminated in a performance of Haydn’s Missa in angustiis. The research project revealed that, while each case study conductor had an individualistic approach to their rehearsal delivery, five main characteristics appeared to be common amongst them all: they recognised the conductor’s role as a teacher; they were interested in working towards a sound ideal; they believed in their responsibility to develop skills; they included performance opportunities in the rehearsal setting; and they emphasised the importance of building community. As a result, these concepts formed the foundation of the author’s work with their own ensemble. These findings have implications for the author’s own practice as well as broader implications for other conductors and the training of student conductors. The results appear to advocate a more holistic approach to conducting and conductor training as well as the importance of developing community within the avocational choir.Thesis (Professional Doctorate)Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)Queensland ConservatoriumArts, Education and LawFull Tex

Applying Service-Dominant Logic into the Procurement Function in Ghanaian Universities
The procurement function of universities in most developing countries has not been well researched. Within the procurement function, the role of service-dominant (S-D) logic is growing in interest. This thesis applies S-D logic to the procurement function in universities within a developing country context. The research investigates how the application of S-D logic into the procurement function can lead to improved procurement performance in universities. Emanating from the seminal work of Lusch and Vargo (2004a), S-D logic is perceived as a progressive business concept capable of creating value by transforming business processes and practices. Proponents of S-D logic argue that because firms do not possess all the resources necessary to be productive, there is the need to collaborate with other actors in business engagements to have shared access to resources in order to jointly create value (Vargo, 2008). The procurement function, a key component of supply network processes, ensures that goods and services are sourced and obtained. However, in order to ensure optimal performance processes need to be managed effectively. The procurement function in Ghana is transitioning from a back-office non-strategic activity to an effective socio-economic function, with the ability to influence decisions and create wealth for governments and the private sector alike (Knight et al, 2007).Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Griffith Business SchoolGriffith Business SchoolFull Tex

Synthesis of Thiolactulose and 1-Deoxymannojirimycin from D-fructose using the Mitsunobu reaction
D-fructose is a cheap and readily accessible carbohydrate that receives limited synthetic development compared to other carbohydrates, primarily due to the complex mixtures of anomeric product formed from simple protecting group chemistry. Synthetic development of D-fructose derivatives presents a significant opportunity for the discovery of novel synthetic products containing D-fructose, as well as improved access to important already known derivatives. From the outset, this work aimed to prepare a novel S-linked galectin-3 antagonist derived from lactulose, named thiolactulose (1-thio-β-D-galactopyranosyl-4-S-D-fructofuranose). In order to prepare thiolactulose, a C-4 thio fructose derivative first needed to be prepared. A C-4 derivative did not exist in the literature, leading us to assess several synthetic methods to produce this material. The most practical methodology was to use a Mitsunobu reaction to prepare a key tagato epoxide derivative that ring-opens to form products in the D-fructo configuration. A significant amount of optimisation of this process was required due to the formation of the inverse psico epoxide stereoisomer. Specifically, solving this problem led to a significant shift in project direction, with the majority of the work contained in this thesis using the Mitsunobu reaction in some capacity.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Institute for GlycomicsScience, Environment, Engineering and TechnologyFull Tex
Assessing and Reducing Risk Due to Chlorpyrifos Use among Rice Farmers in Vietnam: From Probabilistic Risk Assessment to Safety Strategy Development
Vietnamese farmers are at high risk of pesticide exposure due to usage of pack-back sprays for application of pesticides with their rice crops. Chlorpyirifos has been the most common organophosphate registered for agricultural use in Vietnam, however the health risk due to the use of this compound by rice farmers has not been evaluated. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the health risk of chlorpyrifos exposure to rice farmers, using a probabilistic approach, with a secondary objective of developing safety strategies for pesticide risk reduction, using qualitative needs assessment methods used for evaluating health promotion programs. Farmer exposure to chlorpyrifos from pesticide application was measured by biological monitoring. Urine samples were collected from farmers (18) over pesticide spraying application time and analysed for 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP), the major urinary metabolite of chlorpyrifos, using an enzymatic pre-treatment before extraction followed by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Absorbed Daily Doses (ADD) of chlorpyrifos for farmers was then estimated from urinary TCP levels, expressed as μg/g creatinine. The exposure doses, comprising baseline exposure dose (ADDB), post-application exposure dose (ADDA), and lifetime average daily exposure dose (LADDE) were calculated. The baseline exposure dose (ADDB) ranged from 0.03 to 1.98 μg/kg/d with a mean of 0.24 μg/kg/d. The post-application exposure dose (ADDA) ranged from 0.35 to 94 μg/kg/d with a mean of 19.4 μg/kg/d which is approximately 80 times higher than the mean values of ADDB (0.24 μg/kg/d). The lifetime average daily dose (LADDE) ranged from 0.01 to 1.7 μg/kg/d with a mean of 0.3 μg/kg/d. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that personal protective equipment reflected by percentage of body coverage, amount of chlorpyrifos used and length of application made major contributions to ADDA. However, the best regression model for the relationship between ADDA and exposure factors was observed with two independent variables comprising body coverage and amount of chlorpyrifos used.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Griffith School of EnvironmentScience, Environment, Engineering and TechnologyFull Tex
