    The human-dog relationship in early medieval England and Ireland (c. AD 400-1250)

    This thesis aims to explore the human-dog relationship in early medieval England and Ireland (c. AD 400-1250) and so develop an improved understanding of how people perceived and utilised their dogs. In 1974, Ralph Harcourt published a seminal paper reviewing the metrical data for archaeological dog remains excavated from British antiquity. Nearly forty years on, many more dog bones have been excavated and recorded. His results from the Anglo-Saxon period illustrated that the degree of skeletal variability had reduced after the end of the Roman occupation, with an increase in the average size. He also observed two distinct groups in the estimated shoulder height measurements.The key areas that have been considered include: dog functionality, morphology, and treatment. Influences that may have led to changes in people’s perception of dogs during this time period have been examined. Differences between England and Ireland are assessed, but variation in recording methods has meant the data obtained on the Irish dogs were limited. An interdisciplinary approach has been taken, combining archaeological, historical and anthrozoological information. New evidence has shown that humans’ relationships with dogs were more complex and varied than previous research would suggest, especially in the treatment of dogs at their death. This was particularly evident in England, where a change in the burial location of dogs was observed from the end of the seventh century, and could be linked to the development of Christianity and its negative teachings towards the dog. More metrical data from English sites have shown that the two distinct groups observed in Harcourt’s Anglo- Saxon results were no longer apparent

    Amanda Maier (1853−1894), a pioneering Swedish violinist and composer of the late nineteenth century, holds a unique place in music history as the first-ever female music director in Sweden. Despite her significant achievements, her compositions have remained relatively unknown. Therefore, the document aims to illuminate Amanda Maier's violin works, focusing on investigating her violin sonata in terms of violin performance and pedagogy. Specifically, the study offers insights into the performance techniques employed and provides other pertinent pedagogical suggestions for each movement. The document features an introductory chapter and a review of the historical context of Maier's life and the violin sonata. Subsequent chapters shift the focus to performance practice and pedagogical suggestions with theoretical analysis. One distinctive feature of the study is the inclusion of practice exercises composed originally by the author, tailored specifically to the techniques found in the sonata. These exercises aid practitioners in incorporating Maier's violin sonata into their program. The study assists violinists in diversifying their performance and teaching literature. It seeks to inspire renewed appreciation for Amanda Maier's artistic legacy because it is important to recognize the remarkable contributions of women in the classical music industry, and Amanda Maier, an underrepresented composer, exemplifies this. The document not only contributes to music research but also enhances pedagogical practices, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for female composers in the classical music world

    An invitation to grieve: reconsidering critical incident responses by support teams in the school setting

    This article proposes that consideration could be given to an invitational intervention rather than an expectational intervention when support personnel respond to a critical incident in schools. Intuitively many practitioners know that it is necessary for guidance/counselling personnel to intervene in schools in and following times of trauma. Most educational authorities in Australia have mandated the formulation of a critical incident intervention plan. This article defines the term critical incident and then outlines current intervention processes, discussing the efficacy of debriefing interventions. Recent literature suggests that even though it is accepted that a planned intervention is necessary, there is scant evidence as to the effectiveness of debriefing interventions in stemming later symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. The authors of this article advocate for an expressive therapy intervention that is invitational rather than expectational, arguing that not all people respond to trauma in the same way and to expect that they will need to recall and retell what has happened is most likely a dangerous assumption. A model of invitation using Howard Gardner's (1983) multiple intelligences is proposed so that students are invited to grieve and understand emotionally what is happening to them following a critical incident

    Amanda Galvan Huynh (she/her) is a Xicana writer and educator from Texas. She is the author of a chapbook, Songs of Brujería (Big Lucks September 2019) and Co-Editor of Of Color: Poets’ Ways of Making: An Anthology of Essays on Transformative Poetics (The Operating System 2019). Her debut poetry collection, Where My Umbilical is Buried, is forthcoming in March 2023 with Sundress Publications. Amanda has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Best New Poets, and Sundress Publications’ Best of the Net. She was a 2016 AWP Intro Journal Project Award Winner, 2018 Best of the Net Winner, a finalist for the 2015 Gloria Anzaldúa Poetry Prize, and a finalist for the 2017 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship. Her poetry can be read in print and online journals such as Hayden’s Ferry Review, Puerto del Sol, The Southampton Review, and others. She is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Simon Fraser University, and has a focus on feminist teaching and learning. Amanda teaches and studies theories of labour, capitalism, motherhood, care, representation, and popular culture.
