Although much has been written about the Farnese palace in Caprarola by Vignola, there are many critical issues on the previous planning phase by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Baldassarre Peruzzi, due to a general lack of archival sources.
The essay proposes to re-examine the case by focusing on the drawings stored at GDSU in Florence, which are the only tangible sources of architects’ creative process. Thanks to a new analysis of the drawings, it's possible to dispel the doubts around the ambiguities on drawings raised by the literature, with the main aim to understand the role played by the two architects in the Farnese commission, finally contextualized in a more specific historical moment compared to the past.
Furthermore, the essay also establishes an accurate comparison between the drawings, specifically looking at forms and measures: this allows to understand architects' influences in their different ways of designing a fortress in the form of a palace
The essay describes Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Baldassarre Peruzzi’s attitudes in designing less valuable buildings placed in the consolidated urban fabric. Through some examples, it is possible to highlight their use of solution strategies to deal with planning problems due to surrounding pre-existing buildings. It’s also possible to observe the ambition to ennoble these residences by using elements inspired by ancient architecture and by adopting the language of the emerging architecture in the Early Modern age
Genomewide linkage scan of schizophrenia in a large multicenter pedigree sample using single nucleotide polymorphisms
A genomewide linkage scan was carried out in eight clinical samples of informative schizophrenia families. After all quality control checks, the analysis of 707 European-ancestry families included 1615 affected and 1602 unaffected genotyped individuals, and the analysis of all 807 families included 1900 affected and 1839 unaffected individuals. Multipoint linkage analysis with correction for marker-marker linkage disequilibrium was carried out with 5861 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; Illumina version 4.0 linkage map). Suggestive evidence for linkage ( European families) was observed on chromosomes 8p21, 8q24.1, 9q34 and 12q24.1 in nonparametric and/or parametric analyses. In a logistic regression allele-sharing analysis of linkage allowing for intersite heterogeneity, genomewide significant evidence for linkage was observed on chromosome 10p12. Significant heterogeneity was also observed on chromosome 22q11.1. Evidence for linkage across family sets and analyses was most consistent on chromosome 8p21, with a one-LOD support interval that does not include the candidate gene NRG1, suggesting that one or more other susceptibility loci might exist in the region. In this era of genomewide association and deep resequencing studies, consensus linkage regions deserve continued attention, given that linkage signals can be produced by many types of genomic variation, including any combination of multiple common or rare SNPs or copy number variants in a region. Das ästhetische Element in der historischen Erkenntnis. Croce und Windelband
The author makes a comparison between Benedetto Croce’s academic
writing of 1893, La storia ridotta sotto il concetto generale dell’arte, and Wilhelm
Windelband’s Rektoratsrede of 1894, Geschichte und Naturwissenschaft. By means
of this comparison, which is focused on the concepts of intuition and interest, the author
can reconstruct the dense network of sources of the theory of the history outlined by the
young Croce and by Windelband: from Lazarus to Simmel, from Köstlin to Labriola
Sleep-associated adverse events during the methylphenidate treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A meta-analysis
Objective: Sleep disturbances are a feature of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and an adverse event (AE) of methylphenidate (MPH) treatment. We sought to clarify MPH-associated sleep problems and how studies are affected by confounding factors. Data Sources: Published studies in English collected via online databases and unpublished data from www.clinicaltrials.gov and FDA websites. Sources were searched from inception to August 2017. Study Selection: We included blinded placebo-controlled studies of youth with ADHD conducted in naturalistic settings. This led to 35 studies yielding 75 observations of sleep-related AEs. These studies comprised 3079 drug-exposed and 2606 placebo-treated patients. Data Extraction: Two PhD reviewers reviewed each study for inclusion. Four PhD/PharmD reviewers extracted data in duplicate. Discrepancies were resolved by discussion or, if needed, by the senior author. Results: We found increased pooled relative risks (RRs) for MPH-associated sleep-related AEs for insomnia, initial insomnia, middle insomnia, combined insomnia, and sleep disorder. Several sample or study design features were significantly associated with the RR for sleep-related AEs and the MPH formulation studied. After correcting for confounding, we found significant differences among drugs. We show that the RR, and its interpretation, is constrained by the placebo AE rate. Conclusions: Several types of insomnia and sleep problems are associated with MPH treatment. Study design and sample features influence the RR statistic. By showing that the rate of placebo AEs impacts the RR, we provide the field with a useful covariate for adjusting RR statistics
Prokaryotic and eukaryotic unicellular chronomics
An impeccable time series, published in 1930, consisting of hourly observations on colony advance in a fluid Culture of E. coli, was analyzed by a periodogram and power spectrum in 1961. While the original senior author had emphasized specifically periodicity with no estimate of period length, he welcomed further analyses. After consulting his technician. he knew of no environmental periodicity related to human schedules other than an hourly photography. A periodogram analysis in 1961 showed a 20.75-h period, It was emphasized that "(...). the circadian period disclosed is not of exactly 24-h length." Confirmations notwithstanding, a committee ruled out microbial circadian rhythms based on grounds that could have led to a different conclusion, namely first, the inability of some committee members to see (presumably by eyeballing) the rhythms in their own data, and second, what hardly follows. that there were-too many analyses" in the published papers. Our point in dealing with microbes and humans is that analyses are indispensable for quantification and for discovering a biologically novel spectrum of cyclicities. matching physical ones. The scope of circadian organization estimated in 1961 has become broader, including about 7-day. about half-yearly, about-yearly and ex-yearly and decadal periodisms, among others. Microbial circadians have become a field of their own with eyeballing, yet time-microscopy can quantify characteristics with their uncertainties and can assess broad chronomes (time structures) with features beyond circadians. As yet only suggestive differences between eukaryotes and prokaryotes further broaden the perspective and may lead to life's sites of origin and to new temporal aspects of life's development as a chronomic tree by eventual rhythm dating in ontogeny and phylogeny.
This is a panoramic vision of 20 years of CSD-researches and other 20 years of data-studies on the possible influence of External Energies(EE) on the bio-substrata in comparison also with the studies of several authors on the other substrata, including human health (i. e.: in the space vectors). The author put in evidence Cosmic Rays and Solar Activity as dominant factors of External Energies influencing directly or indirectly the substrata in the biosphere, including CSD.
