    Redpath on the Nature of Philosophy

    In this article the author discusses Peter A. Redpath’s understanding of the nature of philosophy and his account of how erroneous understandings of philosophy have led to the decline of the West and to the separation of philosophy from modern science and modern science from wisdom. Following Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, Redpath argues that philosophy is a sense realism because it begins in wonder about real things known through the senses. Philosophy presupposes pre-philosophical knowledge, common sense, which consists of principles rooted in sensation that make human experience, sense wonder, and philosophy possible. Philosophy is certain knowledge demonstrated through causes and thus philosophy is the same as science. Redpath understands science as a habit that we acquire through repeated practice. More precisely, a scientific habit is a simple quality of the intellect that enables us to demonstrate (prove) the necessary properties of a genus through their causes or principles. In this way, science is the study of the one and the many. Redpath argues that metaphysics is the final cause of the arts and sciences, providing the foundation for all of the arts and sciences and justifying their principles. Finally, he argues that with modernity’s loss of belief in God and its rejection of metaphysics as a science, utopian socialism has become an historical/political substitute for metaphysics

    Gilson as Christian Humanist

    The author suggests that the intellectual life of Étienne Gilson constituted a new humanism, that Gilson’s scholarly work was part of a new renaissance, that a new humanism that Gilson thought is demanded by the precarious civilizational crisis of the modern West after World Wars I and II. He also argues that, more than anything else, Gilson was a renaissance humanist scholar who consciously worked in the tradition of renaissance humanists before him, but did so to expand our understanding of the notion of “renaissance” scholarship and to create his own brand of Christian humanism to deal with problems distinctive to his age. The author shows the specificity of the Christian humanism that Gilson developed as part of his distinctive style of doing historical research and of philosophizing

    Peter A. Redpath, The Moral Psychology of St. Thomas Aquinas: An Introduction to Ragamuffin Ethics

    Author Peter Redpath outlines a personalist Thomism, a philoso-phy for the acting person. He aims to correct what he sees as miscon-ceptions of St. Thomas’s teachings in large part due to Cartesian phi-losophy and the West’s deficient metaphysics. In personalist Thomism, “metaphysics and ethics are more than subjects of study;” “they are chiefly habits of the human soul, habits generated by an organizational and moral psychology” (21). Redpath succeeds in showing reason’s centrality to discerning and living the moral life of virtuous habits. Giv-en the book’s topic, only the second chapter deals with God, Divine Providence, and Divine Rule directly. Other chapters focus on human happiness, the emotions, habit, the law, justice, friendship, and pleas-ure. Redpath notes the importance of being motivated to possess “the real desire to become morally good, an excellent human being” (2)

    Calpain cleavage and subcellular characterisation of the ferlin family.

    The ferlins are a family of C2-domain containing proteins. C2 domains regulate vesicle fusion in synaptotagmins, and animal models of ferlin deficiency display pathologies related to Ca2+-dependent vesicle fusion. Dysferlin mutations cause limb-girdle muscular dystrophy due to defective membrane repair. Our group has previously shown that Ca2+-dependent proteases, calpains, cleave dysferlin following membrane injury, releasing mini-dysferlinC72, that we hypothesise mediates membrane repair. Otoferlin mutations cause non-syndromic deafness, while no pathology causing mutations have been identified in other ferlins. My project establishes that dysferlin and myoferlin, type-I ferlins, are present at the plasma membrane and endo-lysosomal pathway while otoferlin and Fer1L6, type-II ferlins, are present at the plasma membrane and recycling trans-Golgi compartments. I also show that dysferlin is cleaved to mini-dysferlinC72 following injury in all cell types by the ubiquitous calpains-1 and -2 in the alternatively spliced exon 40a, indicating dysferlin cleavage is a fundamental response to membrane injury. Exon 40a-containing dysferlin recruits to sites of membrane injury in myotubes, indicating mini-dysferlinC72 may function directly at sites of injury. Finally, I have shown that calpains also cleave otoferlin and myoferlin. Cleavage of other ferlins indicates ferlin cleavage is an evolutionarily conserved event, predating the split between type-I and type-II ferlins

    Scenes from the Past Multidetector CT of Egyptian Mummies of the Redpath Museum

    As a nondestructive method of historical and anthropologic inquiry, imaging has played an important role in mummy studies over the past several decades. Recent technologic advances have made multidetector computed tomography (CT) an especially useful means for deepening the present understanding of ancient cultures by examining preserved human remains. In April 2011, three ancient Egyptian human mummies from the Redpath Museum of McGill University were examined with 320-section multidetector CT as part of the IMPACT Radiological Mummy Database project headquartered at the University of Western Ontario. Whole-body scanning was performed with a section thickness of 0.5 mm and a peak voltage of 120 kVp, and the raw CT datasets were postprocessed by using smooth body and high-resolution bone convolution filters. Two of the mummies were scanned at different energy levels (80 and 135 keV). The high-resolution CT scans revealed the details of mummification and allowed observations about the socioeconomic and health status of the human subjects based on both the mummification technique used and the appearance of the remains, particularly the bones and teeth. The paleopathologic information obtained from the scans confirmed some findings in studies performed in the same mummies in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The CT scans also demonstrated a high degree of variability in Egyptian mortuary practice, variability that is not generally recognized in the literature. Unusual features that were observed included a relatively uncommon retained heart in mummy RM2718, retained lungs in a mummy from which the heart had been extracted (RM2720), and a cartonnage plaque placed over the left abdomen of a mummy that had been eviscerated transperineally (RM2717)
