Ernst Haeckel and Carl Gegenbaur were amongst the central characters of t he reception of Charles Darwin’s theories in Europe. They related evolution to their own work on zoology and morphology and saw the “Darwinismus” they developed as the strongest foundation for their interpretation of natural science in the light of morphology. More than morphology supporting Darwinism it was Darwinism supporting morphology. The true protagonist was Gegenbaur who used his remarkable academic power to attempt to establish morphology as the centre of natural science in German and some Europeans universities
