Matthias Middell : The French Revolution as seen by the Counter-revolutionaries in the Assemblée Nationale from 1789 to 1791. As part of the recently renewed investigation identifying the Counter-revolution with Anti-revolution, this study is based on the systematic analysis of the speeches and stands taken within the Constituant National Assembly ; it attempts to establish the formative stages of a counter-revolutionary party and its strategies at the begining of the Revolution. The author follows the change from a total negation of the Revolution to a populist demagogy established in view of breaking down the revolutionary front. Midell Matthias. Choosing Suitable Text Corpora for Identifying Collocations – A Case Study of a Large Reference Dictionary of Contemporary German

    No full text
This paper investigates the impact of corpora for extracting collocation candidates from large text corpora. We compare a variety of corpora, including best-selling fiction and non-fiction literature, a contemporary German reference corpus, the German Wikipedia, a curated web page monitor corpus, and a large newspaper corpus. All corpora undergo processing with an NLP pipeline for morphological and syntactic annotations. Collocation candidates are then extracted using dependency parse tree patterns. For our evaluation, we utilized three gold standard collocation datasets for contemporary German with a total amount of appr. 200,000 collocations. Our findings confirm that well-curated, medium-sized corpora, diverse in text types, offer superior coverage compared to opportunistically collected corpora of equivalent size. We could also confirm that well curated newspaper texts perform better than pure web corpora of the same size. Additionally, we observed significant variation in coverage among the examined corpora, depending on specific syntactic relations. Future work will focus on training models to classify collocation candidates, leveraging the advancements in LLMs. Further research into larger, more diverse datasets for both training and evaluation could improve collocation ranking and candidate discovery

Recent Transformations in the Fields of Research on Global History and of World History Writing: A Story from the Beginning of the 21st Century These introductory remarks focus besides the presentation of the articles in the thematic issue on two phenomena. World History got over the recent two decades again a prominent place within historiography and it is more and more characterized by a transnational practice in doing research, publication, and academic teaching. Back in 2000 when reviewing the previous decade it has been argued that global history turned into a field driven by archival studies different places and based on a division of labour inevitable in a highly specialized research landscape. An increasing number of workshops, a more and more sophisticated methodological debate, and the emergence of academic journals are among the indicators for a process of professionalisation. Insofar, this period was distinguished from a time when general histories and grand narratives had been written often by just one author synthesizing secondary literature dominating the field. Recently large syntheses are back on the book market, although some of them different in style and empirical foundation. Therefore, the relationship between the revival of the demand and the production of such master pieces and the ongoing development of global history as a field with emphasis on empirical research merits attention. A second point in case is the multilevel organizational pattern, namely the simultaneity of national audiences, local traditions of history writing and continental as well as global networks of scholars

(Autorenreferat)'The article introduces the following papers, all of which focus on transnational history as a project, as a new category, and as a new label for historical writing and research. The author situates transnational history at the intersection of two different historiographical approaches: cultural transfer studies on the one hand and global or new world history on the other. He discusses the consequences that arise with a transnational research agenda (as part of the cultural reaction to globalization) when discussion methods, narratives and institutional settings as well as the relationship of transnational history to the historical self-understanding of 'actual' societies.' Blaufuss, F. Halzen, C. Kopper (Changed to add one missing author, no other changes from initial version.)The recent observation by the IceCube neutrino observatory of an astrophysical flux of neutrinos represents the "first light" in the nascent field of neutrino astronomy. The observed diffuse neutrino flux seems to suggest a much larger level of hadronic activity in the non-thermal universe than previously thought and suggests a rich discovery potential for a larger neutrino observatory. This document presents a vision for an substantial expansion of the current IceCube detector, IceCube-Gen2, including the aim of instrumenting a 10km310\,\mathrm{km}^3 volume of clear glacial ice at the South Pole to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. A detector of this size would have a rich physics program with the goal to resolve the sources of these astrophysical neutrinos, discover GZK neutrinos, and be a leading observatory in future multi-messenger astronomy programs

Prince Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) as a cultural mediator between France and Germany : A study of his unpublished correspondence in French

Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871) enjoyed tremendous notoriety during his lifetime, whether it be in the German States, throughout Europe or even beyond. He was not only the owner of one of the largest estates in Upper Lusatia (Prussia), but also one of the most famous German landscape architects of his time, the author of highly successful travelogues and a traveller who spent almost six years in the Orient. He also left an abundant correspondence, much of it written in French and unpublished. Based on the cultural transfer approach (Espagne/Werner/Middell), supplemented by network analysis (Granovetter/Burt), the aim of this thesis was to examine the epistolary contacts of this French-speaking and Francophile prince. This study shows that Pückler-Muskau established a real network between the Orient, France and the German States, through which he tried to exert influence over political decisions and contributed to enriching equestrian expertise in Europe, not only through theoretical and pragmatic knowledge, but also through the purchase of horses which he brought back to Prussia (material transfer). Through another network, he established relations between the Court of Napoleon III and the Court of Prussia, working for Franco-German rapprochement and a united Europe. The prince's correspondence also reveals that he did not always put himself on the scene (Maillet/Stobbe/Jacob), but was also the central and discreet actor of an almost family network for which he mobilised all his contacts in France
