Policies for a green transition: Exploring contemporary environmental and sustainability policies for green guidance

    No full text
This paper explores the current international landscape for environmental and sustainability policies. It finds a strong consensus exists around the need to address climate change, with many countries utilising the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to do this. Key arenas for action are labour market policy and education policy which creates an important context for green guidance. Currently, there is relatively little specific policy which addresses the role of career guidance in the green transition. Despite the policy busyness discussed in this report, it is also clear that current policy initiatives are insufficient to meet the primary policy aims of limiting the impacts of climate change and stopping environmental destruction. This policy failure also provides an important context for the development of green guidance. The implications of this policy environment are discussed with reference to their implications for career guidance and a series of recommendations are set out

Practitioners' perspectives on green guidance: An international survey

    No full text
This paper sets out the findings of a survey of 674 career guidance practitioners conducted in late 2023 and early 2024 about green guidance. The survey reports that the clients of career guidance need help with a range of sustainability issues and that a minority raise issues of environmental sustainability during career guidance interventions. Practitioners have a strong belief that the world is currently experiencing a climate crisis and that career guidance can be a small part of addressing this. However, most currently lack the theories, models and resources to deliver green guidance. Implications for the Exploring Green Guidance project and the development of models of green guidance are discussed

Mesophilic-hydrothermal-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion of green corn straw

    No full text
Mesophilic-hydrothermal (80-160 degrees C, 30 min)-thermophilic (M-H-T) digestion and control tests of mesophilic (M), thermophilic (T), hydrothermal-mesophilic (H-M), and mesophilic-thermophilic digestion (M-T) of green corn straw were conducted for a 20-day fermentation period. The results indicate that M-H-T is an efficient method to improve methane production. A maximum methane yield of 371.74 mL/g volatile solid was obtained by the M (3 days)-H (140 degrees C)-T (17 days) process, which was 20.44%, 16.55%, 31.44%, and 14.31% higher than the yields of the M, T, 140-M, and M-T processes. The enhanced methane production was attributed to (1) the improved hemicellulose degradation and lignin disorganization; (2) prevention of the degradation of soluble sugar, easily hydrolyzed hemicellulose and cellulose into furfural and methylfurfural; and (3) lack of formation of Maillard reaction products during initial hydrothermal treatment. Evidence on green guidance: A review of the literature

    No full text
This paper explores literature which examines the Intersection between career, career guidance, sustainability, green issues and environmental concerns. It finds that the literature is clear that climate change is real and already happening and that it is already having impacts on people’s careers through the greening of the labour market and education system and through a range of psycho-social effects such as climate anxiety. This has led to the development of an emergent ‘green guidance’ movement which explores how career guidance can respond to and challenge climate change. It finds three main approaches that are adopted which can be described as technocratic, developmental and emancipatory. A series of recommendations are discussed for the Exploring Green Guidance project

Green space management & residents’ benefits

    No full text
Management of green spaces in rental multi-family housing areas is discussed in a Swedish context and the benefits of maintenance for residents examined in this thesis. In Sweden, these green spaces are an important part of the urban green structure and the housing companies who manage these spaces are important green space providers. However, the management and maintenance of such green spaces and its benefits for residents seldom receive attention in research. The residents’ perspective is the main interest here, since they are to benefit from maintenance. The perspective of the providers (housing staff) is also included, because of their influence through provision on residents’ experiences. Taking an ex-plorative and mainly qualitative approach, two empirical studies were conducted using interviews as the main method of collecting data. In a case study of three rental and multi-family housing areas, 27 residents and 13 housing staff were interviewed regarding their experience of the maintenance of green space and their views on maintenance provision respectively. In a telephone survey of 30 municipal housing companies, housing staff were asked how they organised maintenance of green spaces and what motivated that choice. The case study identified several benefits of green space maintenance for residents and three were further explored: (1) green space being ‘well-kept’ (2) the housing area being safe and (3) a just distribution of maintenance. The results showed that several elements of maintenance and the social context, such as views of maintenance staff and of other residents, contribute to residents’ experience of these bene-fits. Views of well-kept green space were for example not simply about technical quality but e.g. the image of maintenance staff and their efforts was also considered. There is consequently a need to widen the technical discussion about how to manage and maintain green spaces

Developing green guidance practice: Report from the innovation factories

    No full text
This report presents the outcomes of a series of innovation factories which were held in Czechia, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Slovakia to develop practical approaches to green guidance. The innovation factories are collaborative workshops inspired by action research in which participants and explore and co-create tools, strategies, and models for green guidance. Each country addressed unique local challenges and ethical concerns, developed practical tools, and promoted reflection among career practitioners on how to incorporate environmental and social sustainability into their work. Participants emphasised the importance of empathy, client-centered approaches, and aligning green themes with clients’ realities, while also acknowledging systemic barriers such as lack of training, resources, and societal resistance. The initiative fostered a community of practice, produced over 40 tools, and emphasised the ethical imperative to prepare clients for careers in a changing climate and economy
