Neglected Source of Prosperity. Marsh resources and the role of the enku in Third millennium BC Southern Mesopotamia

    No full text
Recent studies have discussed the importance of marshes in the economic landscape of Southern Mesopotamia in the fourth and third millennium BC. If, on the one side, extant documentation offers abundant evidence for marsh natural products, on the other one, mentions of marshes as place of provenance of incoming commodities are quite scarce. This might be due to several factors, among them, to the fact that in economic texts the information about the provenance of incoming commodities can be simply replaced by the name of agents who had to supply specific commodities. The role of intermediary agent between marsh resources and state or provincial institutions may have been played by the ‘enku(d/r)’, a profession attested from the beginning of the cuneiform tradition, traditionally translated as ‘inspector of the fishery’ or ‘tax collector’. The present contribute aims to solve such an ambiguity and reassess the connection between the ‘enku(d/r)’and taxes in third millennium documents

FEM analysis of the elastic behavior of composites and nanocomposites with arbitrarily oriented reinforcements

    No full text
This work is aimed at studying the effect of different morphological features on the stiffness of discontinuous fiber reinforced composites and nanocomposites by means of FEM analysis. The morphological features include not only volume fraction and aspect ratio of reinforcement, but also its orientation. The FEM approach, based on continuum mechanics, required the definition of a proper representative volume element, in which reinforcement is randomly dispersed in the simulation domain. The developed model has been used in order to calculate the stiffness matrix of unidirectional discontinuous glass fiber reinforced composite (DGFRC) as well as carbon nanotubes reinforced nanocomposites (CNTRNC). Comparison with closed form analytical models showed that the Halpin-Tsai (HT) model is able to predict the evolution of the elastic constants over a wide range of volume fractions and aspect ratio. The Tandon-Weng (TW) model, in contrast, shows a poor agreement with the simulation results. On the other hand, the developed FEM model also allowed accounting for reinforcement orientation. The calculated elastic properties are in excellent good agreement with the corresponding values calculated according to the classical lamination theory, indicating the accuracy of the developed FEM model for estimation of stiffness of composites and nanocomposites, also accounting for reinforcement orientation

Il contributo analizza i diversi approcci di studio del Codice di Hammurabi nella tradizione cuneiforme posteriore, suggerendo inoltre che tale composizione abbia funto da modello per gli studi paleografici del I Millennio a.C.Hammurabi is surely one of the most famous rulers of the Ancient Near East thanks to the stele engraved with his laws found at the beginning of the twentieth century. The numerous sources of his Code, attested in the history on ancient Mesopotamia until the last period of its history, suggest that this composition was famous also in ancient times and was considered by the scholars a paradigm to imitate both as an example of high style as well as the best representative of the most ancient cuneiform writing

FEM analysis of the stiffness evolution in clustered composites and nanocomposites

This work is aimed at studying the stiffness evolution of clustered composites and nanocomposites by FEM analysis. In fully dispersed composites and nanocomposites, proper modeling requires accounting for nanoparticle aspect ratio, volume fraction, and angle of orientation. In addition to these, the FEM model proposed in this work accounts for number of nanoparticles and volume fraction of nanoparticles in the cluster. The proposed approach allowed to calculate the longitudinal modulus and the other elastic constants of clustered composites, showing significant differences with the modulus of fully disperse composites
