religioni istituzionalizzate nell’Europa dell’età moderna. Scopo di questo studio è analizzare questo fenomeno dalla prospettiva della storia della sessualità
esaminando le relazioni tra tolleranza religiosa, scetticismo e costumi
sessuali. L’autore investiga i legami tra aspetti apparentemente disgiunti: coesistenza religiosa, scetticismo, e attitudini tolleranti nei confronti delle trasgressioni sessuali, partendo dall’ananlisi di materiale archivistico dell’Inquisizione spagnola in Sicilia. Nei casi sotto esame, la difesa della libertà sessuale, supportata da un’interpretazione ereticale della caduta dallo stato edenico, andava di pari passo con l’idea che tutti potessero raggiungere la
salvezza eterna nella loro fede.Recent historical research has uncovered the role played by religious conversions and concrete practices of toleration in the Mediterranean region
in the genesis of sceptical approaches towards religions in Europe during the
early modern period. This article aims to analyse this phenomenon within
the cultural and geographical frame of the Italian peninsula, examining the
relationship between religious toleration, scepticism, and sexual mores. The author investigates the links between two apparently unrelated matters, religious
toleration and tolerant attitudes towards sexual transgressions, starting
from the analyses of archival material from the time of the Spanish Inquisition in Sicily. In the cases under examination, the praise of sexual freedom – supported by a heretical re-reading of the myth of the Fall from Grace –was paired with the idea that “all can be saved in their own faith”

No full textIt is not possible to overestimate the legacy of Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality and in particular its first volume, The Will to Knowledge, on the historical
study of sexual and gender transgressions. In this article I reflect on
Foucault’s influence in this constantly evolving field of inquiry.
Firstly, I will sum up the main line of the historiographical debate
arising from the French philosopher’s work, from the now-outdated conflict between ‘essentialists ’ and ‘social constructionists’ to the
most recent contributions of queer theorists. I will then focus on the
historiography on non-normative sexualities and gender transgressions
in the early modern Iberian world and its colonies. This case study will show which possible interactions can be established between theoretical reflections and the concrete work of historians.
Addressing the coexistence of a multiplicity of understandings of sexual behaviours in different periods and in diverse social contexts, through the analysis of this literature, I propose a revision of the
Foucauldian narrative, questioning the idea of the nineteenth-century

Sex and Toleration: New Perspectives of Research on Religious Radical Dissent in Early Modern Italy
No full textThis article examines the inquisitorial trials of a number of heretics whose ideas are reminiscent of the heresies of Domenico
Scandella, known as Menocchio, the Friulian miller first studied by
Carlo Ginzburg in his groundbreaking The Cheese and the Worms. However, all the defendants shared a transgressive belief that
seems completely alien to Scandella’s intellectual horizon – namely, the heretical proposition that Adam and Eve committed
sodomy in the Garden of Eden. At this stage of my research, I suggest that this curious reinterpretation of the myth of the fall from grace is an autonomous element that originated in ecclesiastical circles and was subsequently incorporated into a more complex corpus of heretical beliefs. In addition to taking a further step into the history of religious dissent in Italy, the current
research allows us to shed new light on the history of religious toleration in the early modern period, investigating the influence
of Islam in Christian heresies and analysing the possible connections between the quest for sexual freedom and criticism of
institutionalized religions

No full textIl volume racconta la storia dell’omosessualità nell’Occidente cristiano dalla tarda antichità al Settecento. Utilizzando quale punto di osservazione le fonti criminali, vi si ricostruisce una storia sociale e culturale delle trasgressioni sessuali e di genere, incentrandosi, al di là del mondo delle élites, sulla vita e l’esperienza quotidiana di donne e uomini comuni. Questa narrazione si intreccia con gli sviluppi del controllo istituzionale e i suoi rapporti di conflitto e mediazione con una base sociale non sempre docile ad accoglierne i dettami. Alla luce del percorso di ricerca dell’autore e dell’apporto di nuove correnti storiografiche, come la storia delle emozioni, il libro focalizza alcuni snodi critici del dibattito storiografico, sui quali propone di gettare una nuova luce. Ne risulta ridimensionato il ruolo giocato dai rapporti pederastici nelle manifestazioni dell’omosessualità premoderna; omosessualità maschile e femminile sono presentate in una narrazione intrecciata; il tema del desiderio è letto nelle sue complesse relazioni con l’infrazione delle norme di genere; infine, la dimensione globale e i rapporti con le culture extraeuropee giocano un ruolo centrale nella ricostruzione storica.
