This paper – divided into three sections – expands upon the work undertaken in “Ricerca sull’inchiesta della Congregazione dell’Indice”, which has examined the Codici Vaticani Latini, a collection which conserves around 9.500 lists of volumes owned by Italian monks and clerics at the end of the sixteenth century. Roberto Rusconi offers an introductory overview of the libraries of religious orders at the end of the sixteenth century. Giovanna Granata analyses the findings of the Inchiesta in terms of actual library holdings and in terms of the circulation of different editions. Rosa Marisa Borraccini examines the case study of the “Confessionario” of Girolamo da Palermo to demonstrate the importance certain texts, although now forgotten and largely ignored, had at the time of their production and circulation

Sexual Dysfunctions in Men Affected by Autoimmune Addison's Disease Before and After Short-Term Gluco- and Mineralocorticoid Replacement Therapy

Introduction. There is evidence suggesting that autoimmune Addison's disease (AD) could be associated with sexual dysfunctions probably caused by gluco- and mineralocorticoid deficiency; however, no study has yet treated this subject in males. Aim. To evaluate male sexuality and psychological correlates in autoimmune AD before and after gluco- and mineralocorticoid replacement therapy. Methods. Twelve subjects with a first diagnosis of autoimmune AD were studied before (baseline) and 2 months after (recovery phase) initiating hormone replacement therapy. Main Outcome Measures. Erectile function (EF), orgasmic function (OF), sexual desire (SD), intercourse satisfaction (IS), overall satisfaction (OS), depression, and anxiety were studied using a number of questionnaires (International Index of Erectile Function, Beck Depression Inventory, and Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory); clinical, biochemical, and hormone data were included in the analysis. Results. At baseline, low values were found for EF, OF, SD, IS, and OS and high values for depression and anxiety; all of these parameters improved significantly in the recovery phase compared with baseline. EF variation between the two phases correlated significantly and positively with the variation of serum cortisol, urinary free cortisol, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure and inversely with that of upright plasma renin activity. Multiple linear regression analysis using EF variation as dependent variable confirmed the relationship of the latter with variation of serum cortisol, urinary free cortisol, and upright plasma renin activity but not with variation of systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusions. Our study showed that onset of autoimmune AD in males is associated with a number of sexual dysfunctions, all reversible after initiating replacement hormone therapy; cortisol and aldosterone deficiency seems to play an important role in the genesis of erectile dysfunction although the mechanism of their activity is not clear. Cirsonella romettensis (Granata-Grillo, 1877) — Beck et al. 2006 (p. 48, mid fig.). Diagnostic characters. Globose-conoidal shell; moderately low spire; circular and slightly prosocline aperture; thick parietal callus often closing the umbilical chink; smooth and glossy outer surface. Protoconch: very low conical; 1.25 whorls; diameter about 260 µm; surface finely granulated; transition to the teleoconch marked by a thin, slightly everted lip. Occurrence. Core BC67 (1 specimen). Height: 2 mm. Distribution and habitat. Cirsonella romettensis is a NE Atlantic (as far South as the Azores) and Mediterranean species; it is a stenobathic element living on small hard substrates in the 100–1000 m depth interval, being commonly recovered from present-day Gryphus vitreus bottoms (Dautzenberg 1889; Corselli & Bernocchi 1988; Warén 1991[a]). It was regarded as an element of CB (deep-sea white corals) biocoenosis (Di Geronimo et al. 1982). Fossil record. Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience. Carretto E, Dall'Igna P, Alaggio R, Siracusa F, Granata C, Ferrari A, Cecchetto G. Source Division of Paediatric Surgery, Department of Paediatrics, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma (FH) of infancy is a benign mesenchymal tumor, occurring as a superficial mass. Complete excision is curative. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical features and treatment results of 18 children with FH are described. RESULTS: Local excision was the most common procedure. Surgery was radical in 10 patients, with microscopic residual disease in 6; all of them are alive with no evidence of disease 2 to 49 months after diagnosis. One patient, treated with a local reexcision for macroscopic residual disease (and chemotherapy for a synchronous desmoid fibromatosis) is well 83 months after diagnosis; the last patient, with a lesion of the labia majora, only underwent biopsy and is doing well, awaiting plastic surgery. LIMITATIONS: The results did not reach statistical significance due to difficulties in collecting cases. CONCLUSIONS: FH should be treated by complete excision; in our experience a nonradical excision was also able to achieve the cure. An aggressive approach should be avoided, as the overall prognosis is excellent. PMID: 16635660 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE
