On Identifying Malicious Nodes in Ad Hoc Networks ABSTRACT

    No full text
Route falsification attacks are easy to launch in mobile ad hoc networks with on demand routing protocols that employ network-wide flooding of control packets for route discoveries. To mitigate this attack, we propose a p-hop crosscheck mechanism that requires nodes p, p ≥ 2, hops apart to authenticate and verify route reply packets using pair-wise shared keys. The crosscheck can detect route falsification by non-colluding malicious nodes on-thefly; furthermore, it can identify a group of at most p +1nodes that contain the malicious nodes that caused the route falsification. Unlike intrusion detection techniques, which require extensive monitoring and sampling, the proposed crosscheck mechanism is light-weight and fast. Therefore, the proposed crosscheck mechanism can be used to augment the existing secure routing protocols and improve intrusion detection capability. We implemented 2-hop crosscheck for AODV in the Glomosim simulator. Using simulations, we show that 2-hop crosscheck mitigates attacks by multiple malicious nodes with negligible performance impact

MRI in evaluating atrophy of the external anal sphincter in patients with fecal incontinence

    No full text
OBJECTIVE: External anal sphincter atrophy seen at endoanal MRI may predict poor outcome of surgical anal sphincter repair for an external anal sphincter defect. The purposes of this study were to compare external phased-array MRI to endoanal MRI for depicting external anal sphincter atrophy in patients with fecal incontinence and to evaluate observer reproducibility in detecting external anal sphincter atrophy with these techniques. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with fecal incontinence (23 women, seven men; mean age, 58.7 years; age range, 37-78 years) underwent both endoanal and external phased-array MRI. Images were evaluated for external anal sphincter atrophy by three radiologists. Measures of differences and agreement between both MRI techniques and of interobserver and intraobserver agreement of both techniques were calculated. RESULTS: The MRI techniques did not significantly differ in their ability to depict external anal sphincter atrophy (p = 0.63) with good agreement (kappa = 0.72). Interobserver agreement was moderate (kappa = 0.53-0.56) for endoanal MRI and moderate to good (kappa = 0.55-0.8) for external phased-array MRI. Intraobserver agreement was moderate to very good (kappa = 0.57-0.86) for endoanal MRI and fair to very good (kappa = 0.31-0.86) for external phased-array MRI. CONCLUSION: External phased-array MRI is comparable to endoanal MRI in depicting external anal sphincter atrophy and, thereby, in selecting patients for anal sphincter repair. Because results among interpreters varied considerably depending on the experience level, both techniques can be recommended in the diagnostic workup of fecal incontinence only if sufficient experience is available

Reorganizations of space and culture in a car-oriented society: the case of Johannesburg

    No full text
Includes abstract. This dissertation aims to identify the multi-faceted ways in which the car enabled a deep restructuring of South Africa's cultural and spatial spheres, taking Johannesburg as a context from which to extract specific insights. The two most popular modes of transportation in South Africa-the car and the minibus taxi-run on the nation's dominant system of highways and roads that came with the mass importation of the car. Because of their high usage, these two transportation modes are compared, contrasted and analyzed throughout the research. Non-instrumental factors associated with the two transport modes (i.e. a means to express oneself, social status, lifestyle and culture) are scrutinized. These factors shape transport choice and play an integral role in the relationships mobility has with space and culture. The car not only helped enable a dramatic shift in geography, but society at-large. This shift laid the groundwork for the desired lifestyle that is embodied by much of the alluring non-instrumental factors identified by respondents and the car advertisements reviewed. Conversely, this dissertation also identifies the multi-faceted ways people without cars participate in a ...... car-oriented society. The layers of informality within the minibus taxi industry, its social networks, culture and spatial organizations are analyzed and compared with that of the car. Transportation studies, government papers, theories within the disciplines of sociology, cultural studies and social psychology were integrated to support the research. Using grounded theory, this study also includes personal insights from private car and public transport users. Car advertisements produced by four of the top-selling car manufacturers in South Africa were reviewed using semiotic analysis and compared with participant responses. Rather than offering a theoretical solution to a car-oriented society, this dissertation offers a way to rethink the geography, lifestyle, culture, institutions, spaces and people associated with the private car and public transport. Ultimately, this may contribute to how a more positive characterization of public transport can be achieved.
