Unruly landscapes: politics of biodiversity, energy and livelihoods in India
Get PDFGlobal concerns on climate change mitigation and reduction in emissions are influencing sustainable projects worldwide. The global discourse on sustainability is manifested locally in various forms that re-arrange human-environment relationships. Such ‘green geographies’ are inevitably rooted in territoriality and are operationalized through controlling access to natural resources. The re-working of the spatial arrangements demarcating control over access to natural resources can pose a threat to local livelihoods that depend on nature. For projects located next to areas of conservation concern, it necessitates a political process of prioritization between conservation, development and livelihoods. In this dissertation, I focus on the re-working of these green geographies.
I examine cases of local opposition against renewable power projects that are located in or around areas of prime conservation. The case sites are located in the Western Ghats and near the Great Himalayan National Park in India. I argue that these green geographies are inherently dynamic and democracy provides the context within which these landscapes are contested and re-defined. Further, I argue that the introduction of renewable energy projects in pre-territorialized landscapes reorients spatial arrangements, resulting in a re-territorialization of these geographies. Further, I position this re-territorialization as an outcome of intense political wrangling that traverses multiple scales and is influenced by the larger politics of environment and development at higher scales. Get PDFDiscrimination is the prejudicial treatment of an individual or a group based on their actual or perceived membership in a certain group or category in the society. It can be either direct or indirect and may be in various forms and patterns depending upon the cultural background and milieu of a particular country or region. Discrimination has multiple ramifications related to exclusion from economic entitlements, basic services and opportunities on one hand and humiliation, subordination, exploitation and denial of citizenship rights on the other. During colonization, the indigenous cultures of those countries were often sidelined, suppressed and openly denigrated in favour of elevating the social and cultural preferences and conventions of the colonizers. Toni Morrison tries to explore various cultural aspects, processes of marginalization as well as decolonization and asserts that the richness and validity of indigenous cultures in an effort to restore pride in practices and traditions that were systematically degraded under colonialism. Vitamin D Supplementation in Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV-VI as Malignant Melanoma Adjuvant Treatment
Get PDFMelanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer and accounts for the majority of skin cancer deaths. Melanoma is prone to recurrence, and even with early surgical intervention relapse occurs in approximately one-third of patients. The current standard of care following excision is inconsistent and patients would benefit from adjuvant treatment to reduce recurrence rates. This randomized controlled study will investigate whether supplementation with vitamin D reduces risk of melanoma recurrence in adults with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI who have been diagnosed and treated for cutaneous melanoma. Outcomes will be measured by relapse-free survival rates over an 18-month period. We hypothesize that the treatment group receiving vitamin D will have a lower rate of relapse of melanoma compared to those not receiving vitamin D supplementation. The results of this study will help inform melanoma management with the goals of decreasing relapse rates in a higher risk patient population
Multicentric extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of uterine adnexa in a young female: An unusual presentation
No full textExtraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma, mostly occurring in the proximal extremities and limb girdle. Majority of the patients are in fifth and sixth decades of life with male preponderance. We report here a case of primary extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the uterine adnexa involving the broad ligament and fallopian tube synchronously without any evidence of uterine/ovarian involvement in a young multiparous female of 27 years. After the histopathological diagnosis, re-excision of the tumor bed with wide local margins was recommended. Since the tumor has an aggressive course, with propensity for late recurrence and metastases to lungs, the patient must be considered for long-term follow-up
Inclusion in general education: Training and support for teachers
No full textMy paper is based on my professional experience in India and the United States, as well as my academic experiences at Thompson Rivers University. This paper argues that general education teachers will feel more comfortable providing inclusion if they receive the proper training and adequate support from the administration and colleagues. It is the responsibility of teachers to ensure that students with specific needs receive quality education, in accordance with Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities. General education teachers should consider the importance of inclusion. Current research has shown that general education teachers feel underprepared to teach inclusive classrooms. Some factors influencing hesitation among general education teachers to provide inclusion include lack of support, collaboration, and adequate resources. Pre-service programs and professional development opportunities provided by administrators must not assume that general education teachers already know about inclusion. A case report on decidual cast
Get PDFThe mucous membrane lining of uterus is known as decidua once it is implanted with a fertilized egg. A decidual cast forms under the influence of hormones while preparing uterus for implantation and it can shed by taking the shape of uterus. It has well known association with ectopic pregnancy. Also it can occur with incomplete abortion as mentioned in this case report. Other conditions are use of progesterone, standard dose of oral contraceptive pills. Our patient 25 year unbooked gravida 3 parity 2 with 12 week period of gestation presented to emergency department with incomplete abortion with excessive bleeding and anaemia. She was shifted for surgical evacuation in which she passed decidual cast, a very rare finding. The histopathology report suggest retained product of conception with chorionic villi
Image Guidance in Radiation Therapy: Techniques and Applications
No full textIn modern day radiotherapy, the emphasis on reduction on volume exposed to high radiotherapy doses, improving treatment precision as well as reducing radiation-related normal tissue toxicity has increased, and thus there is greater importance given to accurate position verification and correction before delivering radiotherapy. At present, several techniques that accomplish these goals impeccably have been developed, though all of them have their limitations. There is no single method available that eliminates treatment-related uncertainties without considerably adding to the cost. However, delivering “high precision radiotherapy” without periodic image guidance would do more harm than treating large volumes to compensate for setup errors.
