No full textOral history interview with James Myung conducted virtually on November 11, 2021.About the Sacramento Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project:This project documents the experiences of the Asian Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Sacramento region and beyond. Students in Asian American Communities, ETHN 113, identified and conducted oral histories with members of the Asian American community about their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. Topics include balancing work and employment during the pandemic, the rise in anti-Asian hate, the experiences of frontline workers, and how the social disruptions of the pandemic were connected to race and racialization. This community history project is overseen by Dr. William Gow

Reflections on the Freedman School
No full textThis chapter considers Freedman’s contribution to scholarship and the nascent elements of a school of thought relevant to both academic and policy realms, as well as introducing a more skeptical and critical approach to the subject’s scholarship. It considers Freedman’s engagement with the policy world and why this has managed to be both extensive and successful, as well as its outcomes. It also introduces discussion of possible challenges to Freedman’s work, presenting a balancing perspective to positive appreciations of his oeuvre. The chapter concludes by indicating the weaknesses of such challenges and reaffirms the sense of a school of thought informed by a distinctive approach. This is the blend of scripturalism and constructivism, on one side, with realism, on the other, that is the hallmark of the nascent school, and the way in which it is germane in both academic and policy domains.</p

Introduction
No full textLawrence Freedman is a figure of significant distinction; who has had real world influence, yet whose theoretical depth and development has been largely overlooked. Is there anything distinctive in Freedman’s approach, a way of working, a methodology, or even the roots of a school of thought? How can we make sense of the extensive and diverse record? Is it possible to bring coherence to it? Is there a common theoretical, or methodological thread running through it? How far does this work of great impact have theoretical weight? Is there something more than chance and personality involved – a way of working with which academics can have real impact on issues of peace and security and produce intellectually meaningful work at the same time? How can we make sense of this record of conducting and supporting research that makes a difference in a way that also suggests coherence and a scholarly identity? Has a distinctive working method – a school of thought – emerged around ‘war studies’, without actually being given a name, under the leading influence of Freedman for thirty years (succeeding War Studies’ founder, Michael Howard)? This is the significant challenge outlined in this chapter and the volume it introduces
