Measures of Digital Health Literacy: A Scoping Review

    No full text
Title: Measures of Digital Health Literacy: A Scoping Review Authors: Leva Gorji, DO; Jessica Elderkin, BA; Eliza W. Beal, MD Background: In the evolving field of medicine, electronic information and communication technologies have become profound tools for combating obstacles related to geographic barriers. As such, understanding and improving digital health literacy (DHL) is imperative to ensure that this form of healthcare is appropriately accessible to users. The objective of this scoping review is to gauge the tools available for assessing DHL. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In this review, a systematic search was conducted in PubMed and Embase. Using Covidence, a screening and synthesis of the data was performed. In total, 1111 studies were imported for screening, leaving 987 studies once duplicates were removed. 52 full-text studies were assessed for eligibility, and a total of 13 studies were included. Results: The tools evaluated included web-based surveys, cognitive surveys, and in-person surveys. These tools were validated in variable populations, although with limitations due to the exclusive focus on English-language measures. This review underscores the importance of developing inclusive and relevant assessment tools to enhance DHL across diverse communities. Conclusion: By addressing these gaps, we can empower individuals to effectively leverage digital health technologies, ultimately fostering greater patient engagement and reducing health disparities in an increasingly digital healthcare environment

    Surgical Treatment of Distal Cholangiocarcinoma

    No full text
Distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA) is a rare malignancy arising from the epithelial cells of the distal biliary tract and has a poor prognosis. dCCA is often clinically silent and patients commonly present with locally advanced and/or distant disease. For patients identified with early stage, resectable disease, surgical resection with negative margins remains the only curative treatment strategy available. However, despite appropriate treatment and diligent surveillance, risk of recurrence remains high with nearly 50% of patients experiencing recurrence at 5 years subsequent to surgical resection; therefore, it is prudent to continue to optimize neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies in order to reduce the risk of recurrence and improve overall survival. In this review, we discuss the clinical presentation, workup and surgical treatment of dCCA

Librarians and OER: Cultivating a community of practice to be more effective advocates

    No full text
As the costs of scholarly and educational publications skyrocket, open educational resources (OER) are becoming an important way to provide content and enhance the teaching and learning experience. Librarians have a key role to play in developing, advocating, and managing OER. For many librarians, however, championing OERs means adding an additional responsibility to their already heavy workloads, which may be overwhelming. This article describes how a grassroots group of academic librarians in British Columbia, Canada joined together as a community of practice to learn and to share ideas, strategies, and tools to support the use of OER. The BCOER Librarians focus on the education and professional development of librarians to help facilitate the use and development of OERs and to create authoritative and sustainable resources to support librarians in OER-related interactions with faculty.Peer reviewedReview articleFinal article publishedOE

Surgical treatment of toraco-abdominal teratoma diagnosed in utero, approached with mini-invasive technique: A case report

    No full text
Thoracic tumours of childhood arise either in the mediastinum, or from the chest wall and rarely from the lung parenchyma. Mediastinal teratoma occur in the anterior mediastinum and are usually very large at presentation; initial treatment is under discussion, but it appears that surgical excision and histological examination are the treatments of choice and it will determine whether the lesion is benign or malignant. The authors report a case of thoracic-abdominal teratoma, diagnosed in utero, and treated successfully with thoracoscopy and laparoscopy. No complication was described in short follow up, and the child was discharged in day 8 th postoperative day. Histology showed mature teratoma. Follow-up at one year: no evidence of recurrence. Due to the rarity of multifocal teratoma in newborns, author believe that mini-invasive technique was useful to stage histological the mass, giving the opportunity to plans a second stage in treatment of the patient. Day of hospitalization resulted shorter in both surgical approaches, and discomfort less for the thoracic approach. This staging must be anyway planned, in the way of prenatal counselling and in the perinatal period, with the team involved in the procedure, that include anaesthetists, oncology staff, obstetricians, neonatologists and pediatric surgeons. It is mandatory in cases like the one reported that a multisciplinary team manage the patients and expert surgeons, especially in minimal invasive surgery, make the adequate plans

This dissertation aims to carry out an analysis of the connection between writing and travel as illustrated by the walking journal, Leva-me contigo: Portugal a pé pela Estrada Nacional 2, by Afonso Reis Cabral, a volume collecting the texts the author posted on Facebook during the journey he made on foot along the 739 kilometers of the National Road 2, the longest in Portugal. Focusing on its circumstances, itinerary, and geographical and human landscapes, we have also highlighted the conventional and innovative elements of Cabral's narrative and its indebtedness to travel literature tradition. In addition, the structural innovations brought into the travelogue genre by digital technologies and social media, conspicuously present in Cabral's narrative, will be emphasized.Mestrado em Português Língua Estrangeira/Língua Segund
