Norwegian dialects examined perceptually and acoustically
Gooskens (2003) described an experiment which determined linguistic distances between 15 Norwegian dialects as perceived by Norwegian listeners. The results are compared to Levenshtein distances, calculated on the basis of transcriptions (of the words) of the same recordings as used in the perception experiment. The Levenshtein distance is equal to the sum of the weights of the insertions, deletions and substitutions needed to change one pronunciation into another. The success of the method depends on the reliability of the transcriber. The aim of this paper is to find an acoustic distance measure between dialects which approximates perceptual distance measure. We use and compare different representations of the acoustic signal: Barkfilter spectrograms, cochleagrams and formant tracks. We now apply the Levenshtein algorithm to spectra or formant value bundles instead of transcription segments. From these acoustic representations we got the best results using the formant track representation. However the transcription-based Levenshtein distances correlate still more closely. In the acoustic signal the speaker-dependent influence is kept to some extent, while a transcriber abstracts from voice quality. Using more samples per dialect word (instead of only one as in our research) should improve the accuracy of the measurements
Cross border intelligibility — on the intelligibility of Low German among speakers of Danish and Dutch
Entlang der deutsch-dänischen und deutsch-niederländischen Staatsgrenzen haben
sich Bruchstellen im niederdeutschen Dialektkontinuum herausgebildet. Im vorliegenden Beitrag untersuchen wir, wie sich die Entstehung solcher Bruchstellen auf die Verstehbarkeit der dialektalen Varietäten über die Grenze hinweg auswirkt. Auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse eines Experiments wird zu diesem Zweck das Hörverständnis niederdeutscher Wörter bei dänischen und niederländischen Testpersonen aus grenznahen und grenzfernen Gebieten verglichen. Es stellt sich heraus,dass die grenznahen Testpersonen in den Nordost-Niederlanden das Niederdeutsche signifikant besser verstehen als die grenzfernen Testpersonen. In Dänemark hingegen ist der Unterschied zwischen den grenznahen und grenzfernen Testpersonen nicht signifikant. Weiterhin zeigt sich, dass die niederländischen Testpersonen mehr niederdeutsche Wörter verstehen als die dänischen. Auf Grundlage einer Analyse auf der Wortebene kann gezeigt werden, dass die grenznahen Testpersonen in den Niederlanden vor allem solche niederdeutschen Wörter besser verstehen, die den dialektalen Varietäten des Grenzgebiets ähnlicher sind als ihren standardniederländischen Entsprechungen. Bei den dänischen Testpersonen ist das hingegen nicht der Fall. Das dialektale Kontinuum an der deutsch-niederländischen Grenze scheint somit noch erhalten zu sein, während es an der deutsch-dänischen Grenze bereits stark geschwächt ist
Conditional Entropy Measures Intelligibility among Related Languages
The Scandinavian languages are so alike that their speakers often communicate, each using their own language, which Haugen (1966) dubbed SEMICOMMUNICATION. The success
of semi-communication depends on the languages involved, and, moreover, can be asymmetric:for example, Swedish is more easily understandable for a Dane, than Danish for a
Swede. It has been argued that non-linguistic factors could explain intelligibility, including its asymmetry. Gooskens (2006), however, found a high correlation between linguistic
distance and intelligibility. This suggests that we need to seek linguistic factors that influence intelligibility, and that potentially asymmetric factors would be particularly interesting. Gooskens’ distance techniques cannot capture asymmetry. The present paper attempts to develop a model of the success of semi-communication based on conditional entropy, in particular using the conditional entropy of the phonememapping in corresponding (cognate)words. Semantically corresponding words were taken from frequency lists and aligned, and the conditional entropy of the phoneme mapping in aligned word pairs was calculated. This
gives us information about the difficulty of predicting a phoneme in a native language given a corresponding phoneme in the foreign language. We also examine the conditional entropy of selected word classes, such as native/loan and function/content words
