Ebb and flood channel systems in the Dutch tidal waters
No full textThis paper should be considered as Van Veen's most important publication since his thesis. It summarizes the results of 20 years of intensive study of estuarine and tidal- basin morphodynamics in The Netherlands. The paper is testimony to Van Veen' s keen observational and artistic skills. His approach is nearly "Da Vincian" in the sense that he is not only a fascinated but also sharp observer of nature and tries to capture the essentials of the dynamic behavior of complex coastal systems in apparently simple sketches. Many of the natural systems that Van Veen studied have been regulated since; thus, this paper contains a set of irreplaceable, high- quality observations on the natural dynamics of tidal systems. Along with Robinson' s (1960) paper on ebb-flood channel systems, it forms an excellent introduction to the study of channel dynamics in estuaries, tidal inlets, and tidal basins. Unfortunately, Van Veen's paper was published in Dutch, with only a brief summary in English. Understandably though, the paper has received very limited recognition in the international literature. The present publication is a tribute to Professor Kees d'Angremond, who retired on November 28, 2001, from the chair of Coastal Engineering at Delft University of Technology. We have seized this occasion to publish an English version of Van Veen' s paper. Surgeon's views of health technology assessment in Australia: Online pilot survey
No full textIntroduction: Many governments have introduced health technology assessment (HTA) as an important tool to manage the uptake and use of health-related technologies efficiently. Although surgeons play a central role in the uptake and diffusion of new technologies, little is known about their opinion and understanding of the HTA role and process. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted using an online questionnaire which was distributed to Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons over a 4-week period. Information was sought about knowledge and views of the HTA process. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, frequencies, and proportions were calculated. Results: Sixty-two surgeons completed the survey; of these, 55 percent reported their primary work place as a public hospital. Twenty-four percent of the participants reported that they had never heard of the HTA agency and 60 percent reported that surgical procedures are most likely to be introduced in the Australian healthcare system at the public hospital level (which is beyond the HTA's scope and dealt with at a state level). However, 61 percent considered that decisions about funding and adoption of new technologies should take place at the national level. Conclusions: This survey provides some evidence that many surgeons remain unaware of the federal government's HTA process but still value evidence-based information. In order for HTA to be an effective aid to rational adoption of health-related technologies, there is a need for an evidence-based approach that is integrated and is accepted and understood by the medical professions.Gisselle Gallego, Kees van Gool, Robert Casey, Guy Madder
Het effect van een anisotropiecoëfficiënt in de Poissonvergelijking op de convergentie van de CG-methode en de ICCG(0)-methode
No full textAllerlei diffusieverschijnselen in de natuurkunde kunnen omschreven wordenmet de Poissonvergelijking op een gebied met te kiezen randvoorwaarden. Er zijn echter ook verschijnselen waarin er een gelaagdheid optreedt zodat er in verticalerichting minder makkelijk diffusie kan plaatsvinden. Dit leidt tot een vergelijkingmet toevoeging van een anisotropiecoëfficiënt epsilon, die dicht bij 0 ligt.Via (onder andere) de Finite Volume Method kunnen deze vergelijkingengediscretiseerd worden, wat leidt tot een stelsel Au = f. Hierbij is A symmetrischen positief deniet (alle eigenwaarden zijn positief). Er zijn tallozemethoden om dit stelsel op te lossen. Een hiervan is de CG-methode, eeniteratieve methode, met als uitbreiding de ICCG(0)-methode. De convergentievan de CG-methode blijkt af te hangen van de eigenwaarden van dematrix A. Hoe dichter de eigenwaarden bij elkaar liggen, hoe sneller deconvergentie. De geschaalde eigenwaarden1 van A liggen min of meer geconcentreerdrond 1. Het is voor een snelle convergentie van belang dat dekleinste eigenwaarden niet al te dicht bij 0 liggen. Dit leidt namelijk tottrage convergentie. Er zijn manieren om de eigenwaarden dichter bij elkaarte brengen. We noemen dat preconditionering. De ICCG(0)-methode is eenvorm van preconditionering en zorgt er (onder andere) voor dat de kleinsteeigenwaarden dichter bij 1 komen te liggen. In dit onderzoek wordt onderzochtwat er gebeurt met de eigenwaarden, zowel in de CG-methode als inde ICCG(0)-methode, als de anisotropiecoëfficiënt heel klein wordt. Hetblijkt dat de ondergrens voor de eigenwaarden van A lineair afhankelijk isvan epsilon. Dit leidt tot een zeer trage convergentie van de CG-methode in hetgeval epsilon klein is. Er blijkt echter ook dat preconditionering met behulp vande ICCG(0)-methode voldoende is om de ondergrens voor de eigenwaardenonafhankelijk te maken van epsilon. Dit betekent dat ook in situaties waarinanisotropie optreedt, ICCG(0) een geschikte methode is om de vergelijkingAu = f op te lossen
Social capitalism : a study of Christian democracy and of the welfare state

In this study Kees van Kersbergen demonstrates the precise nature of the links between Christian Democracy and the welfare state. Using a variety of sources the author describes the origin and development of the christian democratic movement and presents comparative accounts of the varying degrees of political entrenchment of national christian democratic parties. Een leiders-volgersmodel voor online sociale netwerken, gebaseerd op een SIR-model voor het Zikavirus
No full textOnline sociale netwerken zijn zeer populair tegenwoordig. Het gebruik en de invloed van debedrijven achter deze netwerken hebben veel invloed op de maatschappij en hun macht is ver-strekkend. Niet alleen op het voor de hand liggende sociale aspect, maar ook op het gebiedvan privacy en de economie. Het zijn immers zeer grote bedrijven waar zeer veel geld in omgaat en daarmee zijn de belangen enorm. Het gebruik modelleren van online sociale netwerkenis dus interessant voor zowel bedrijven als ook individuen. In dit verslag worden verschillendevormen van SIR-model bekeken, alsmede uitbreidingen. Ook wordt een implementatie gege-ven van een model voor het verloop van het Zikavirus. Hierbij worden de invloeden van tweeverschillende populaties op elkaar en de effecten daarvan gemodelleerd. Het concept van tweeverschillende groepen die effect op elkaar hebben wordt ook gebruikt om de populatie in tweegroepen te verdelen bij het modelleren van het gebruik van online sociale netwerken. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen leiders en volgers, ook wel ‘early adaptors’ en ‘followers’ genoemd. Ook wordt er rekening gehouden met het effect van leiders op volgers bij dit model. Het mo-del wordt vergeleken met een bekende uitbreiding op het SIR-model, het irSIRSbd-model. Hetzo genoemde leiders-volgersmodel presteert beter dan het SIR-model, en vergelijkbaar met hetirSIRSbd-model, terwijl er geen vergelijkbare uitbreidingen aan zijn toegevoegd. De parameters voor de modellen zijn geoptimaliseerd in Matlab metfminsearchde kleinst mogelijke sum of squared errors te geven ten op zichte van de bekende zoekdata
