MEGARA cryogenic system: integration, characterization and CCD alignment
MEGARA cryostat is part of an optical Integral-Field Unit (IFU) and Multi-Object
Spectrograph (MOS) designed to the 10.4m GTC (Gran Telescopio de Canarias) telescope
in La Palma, Spain. MEGARA (Multi-Espectrógrafo en GTC de Alta Resolución
para Astronomía) will provide to the scientific community the possibilities of covering
12.5” x 11.3” on the sky (in the sparse mode), and observing 100 objects in a 3.5’ x 3.5’
field of view (in the disperse mode), with an intermediate-to-high spectral resolution in
the range of R ~ 6000, 11000 and 19000.
This thesis project is focused on the Assembling, Integration and Verification
(AIV) phase of the cryogenic system, which was designed by the Astronomical Instrumentation
Group for Millimeter Wavelengths at the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica,
Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE), with other MEGARA components at the Universidad
Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The main activities of this project included the complete
integration of the cryogenic system, its pressure and temperature characterization,
its integration with other MEGARA subsystems, the continuous monitoring of the
cryostat before the Laboratory Acceptance phase, and the installation and alignment of
the CCD within the cryostat, which operates at a temperature of 153K. The activities
were developed at INAOE and UCM
M.E. Church exterior
A monochrome postcard of the M.E. Church in Georgetown, Delaware. The church was made out of brick and had a tall tower on its corner. Writing on the right indicates that the author was having a good time. Mrs. P. H. Adkins of Milton, Delaware, received this postcard. A postmark on the back indicates that this postcard was mailed from Georgetown, Delaware. The postage stamp is a one-cent U.S. #300, Benjamin Franklin. The back of the postcard is labeled 75.00 and 0240

On using Directional Information for Parameter Space Decomposition in Ellipse Detection
In this paper we use the parametric polar representation to extend the application of edge directional information from circle to ellipse extraction. As a result we obtain a mapping which decomposes the parameter space required for ellipse extraction into two independent sub-spaces and one final histogram accumulator. The mapping includes the tangent of the angle of the first and second directional derivatives. These tangents are computed by considering edge direction at two border points. We show that the use of gradient information for parameter space decomposition avoids the intensive point labelling imposed by geometric constraints used by other approaches

Zooplankton dynamics in a mesoscale eddy-jet system off California
Zooplankton in the central jet of the California Current and an adjacent mesoscale cyclonic eddy centered at 125.1°W, 38.4°N were studied in early July, 1993, using a SeaSoar-mounted Optical Plankton Counter. Within 3 d after the 2 d survey of these mesoscale features we completed a MOCNESS transect across the study area. Zooplankton in the rapidly moving (>40 cm s-1 near surface) jet were negatively correlated with the vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass, which displayed strong fluorescence maxima in the upper 200 m. Zooplankton in the recirculating eddy, however, were positively correlated with fluorescence maxima at the pycnocline (ca 50 m) and at 150 m. Euphausiids, dominated by Euphausia pacifica, and the copepod Calanus pacificus accounted for most of the zooplankton in the upper 50 m of the eddy, while the copepod Metridia pacifica dominated the abundance maximum of medium size zooplankton at 150 m. These species were also present in the jet, but male:female ratios of the 2 copepod species differed greatly, suggesting that populations within the jet and the eddy were distinct from one another. Earlier observations of the cyclonic eddy indicate that it departed California coastal waters in April; resident zooplankton populations may have gone through several generations before they reached the position at which we found it in July. Waters of the jet, by contrast, probably departed from the California coastal region in mid-June, so that its populations of zooplankton may have been essentially the same as those advected to our sampling location
La fecondazione assistita dopo dieci anni di legge 40 : il punto di vista del costituzionalista
The Author of this paper adds the point of view of the constitutionalist to the debate on the Italian statute n.40/1994 on assisted reproduction illustrated by Flamigni and Mori in their work. The paper ends with a reflection on the recent decision n. 162/2014 issued by the Constitutional Court, which has declared the illegitimacy of the prohibition of heterologous reproduction
