The initial theses of the article are: 1) there is no Europe in the right meaning without multiplicity of the national cultures; 2) no-one has the right to decide in an arbitrary manner on the importance and meaning of any nation achievements; 3) the European national cultures develop unequally; 4) the canon of European classics is created autonomously and evolutionarily; 5) the Europeans just need communication net and meeting opportunities. The Author discusses four serious dangers: 1) isolationism and xenophobia; 2) cosmopolitism and nihilism; 3) giving up the right to put up resistance; 4) fictitiousness of intercultural communication and cooperation. With reference to Florian Znaniecki's concept, the Author answers the question: is the "civilisation of the future" an unrealistic fantasy? Some features of this "civilisation of the future" are considered with relation to appropriate social engineering: 1) "infusing the civilisation with spirituality"; 2) "harmonizing of the civilisation"; 3) "flexibility of the civilisation". The article discusses as well relations between "national civilisations" and "the human civilisation". The final statements are: 1) creating of the ecumenical or global civilisation requires careful planning with participation of some specialists in the humanities; 2) the basic feature of this civilisation would be normality of multiplicity of self-definitions created via various ideas, forms and rules of participating in human live

Kariera naukowa a styl pracy naukowej

The researcher has four definitions of scientific career to choose from: 1) scientific career as the road to status and the role of scientific authority; 2) scientific career as the road to status and the role of "lord of the field" - the patron of many clients; 3) scientific career as the road to authorised mastery, travelled faster than by peers; 4) scientific career as the road to power and wealth thanks to competence in a specific area of knowledge. If we choose to study scientific career as the road to status and the role of scientific authority (so important in the theatre of scientific life), we must try to find out if the effort to become an authority is undertaken in a circle whose style of research can be said to be determined by "the line of investigative problem solving". The author also discusses the nature of scientific research, careers in "scholar" science and careers in the science of "researchers cum theorists". The article ends with several conclusions concerning the picking out and backing of persons with intellectual and moral potential disposing towards becoming a scholar who aspires to be a scientific authority and the adequate moulding of the "basic personality of the actor of scientific life" who acts according to the "line of investigative problem solving".Badacz może wybierać spośród czterech wersji pojmowania kariery naukowej: 1) jako drogi do osiągnięcia statusu autorytetu naukowego i pełnienia roli takiego autorytetu; 2) jako drogi do statusu i roli „władcy pola” - patrona wielu klientów; 3) jako drogi do uprawnień mistrzowskich przebytej szybciej od kolegów z pokolenia; 4) jako drogi do władzy i bogactwa dzięki kompetencjom merytorycznym.

The author distinguishes four different types of scientific critique: 1) interpretation of theories and models, concepts and terms, rules and directives, whose purpose is to modify these components and abandon error; 2) analysis of cognitive value, ending in conclusions vacillating between approval/qualification and disapproval/disqualification; 3) inspection of cognitive operations and values from the point of view of their consistency with the doctrine of scientific research; 4) selection (which may also be called “screening”), leading to the choice of works aspiring to the status of accepted elements of the “third world” in the theatre of scientific life; According to the author, critics adopt two styles of play in the scientific truth game: they play either the “ people of the system” game or the “ people of the problem” game. The article ends with several conclusions concerning the nature of scientific critique. Rather than being one of the forms of expression in scientific discourse, critique is the substance of all expressions in this discourse, the very core of the scientific truth game.

Seven Styles of Identity and Seven Games for Identity

    No full text
The question of identity is discussed by way of characterising seven styles of permanent conduct according to a selected formula and rule of presence in interhuman life. One speaks here also about games for identity, that is efforts to gain this permanence of conduct. The styles have been chosen that contain the idea of mission-function. The styles and games concerning identity have been discussed: a fundamentalist, a revolutionist, a counter-revolutionist, a hunter for murders, a scholar, a writer, and a clown. It has been pointed what each of them chooses, and what each of them rejects despite being in identity. Finally, the thesis has been justified: the game for identity is a series of decisions, and the choice of the formula of identity is the choice of a matrix of values and goals and the matrix of ways and means

Normy ethosu nauki a realia ekologiczne pracy naukowej

Scientists’ professional work is a style of using the freedom of receiving and transmitting the word because of striving after the truth typical of the ‘scientific perspective of the world’. The use of such freedom is revealed by the researcher’s definition of himself: he is the one who has the duty of joining criticism with conceptualism; objectivity with rationalism; ‘disobedience in thinking’ with being careful about ‘sovereignty of the thought’; taking care of the functioning of a lot of ‘research programs’ that compete with each other with care of polyphony in scientific discussions. The characteristic of the style of research work is combined with the characteristic of the scientist as an actor playing social roles in the professional circle. The scientist uses the freedom that he needs as a professional-specialist doing his work within the frames of a special kind of institution. Taking into consideration the existence of ‘the Great Science’ and ‘a mass man in science’, we are dealing here with conformation of the scientist as one who wants to use this kind of freedom. We are talking here about the difficulty of exacting respect for the norms of the ethos of science from scientists. This is connected with constant conflicts in the circle of scientists that originate from different ways of understanding and treating those norms. Ecological realities of the scientific work only to some extent favor practicing the profession of the scientist in the proper way. In many respects those realities seriously hinder the proper use of the freedom to receive and transmit the word because of the truth of the scientific type. The realities of the order of scientific search and consideration; the realities of the scientists’ circle; the realities of the world surrounding the scientists’ circle along with its institutions are all significant here. Hence it is important, in our present time, to be faithful to the fundamental dictates to think and to act, which concerns those who make the search for the scientific truth their profession and their vocation
